Mario Tennis (N64) Review

By Denny W. Koopa

This is a very fun sports game, like all the Mario Sports games (all not for GBC, that is). Anyway, I promised Lemmy a Review, so here it is.

Game Publisher: Nintendo
Platform: N64
Rated: E for everyone

I will have this on a 1-4 * scale, and will compare it to the GBC version. 1 means bad and 4 means good. + is better than the GBC version, - is worse, and = means they're the same.

Graphics: ****

The graphics are pretty good, of course; most N64 games have 3D graphics that are good. One problem, where's Daisy's Crown? She doesn't look good without it =\, but that doesn't change the score! (+)

Music: **

I only really liked one song, but the music gets you more into the action. It's better than GBC, I have to say, because it doesn't have the same music every match. The music I like is the one you're listening to now! (+)

Controls: ****

Easy and fair. A or B, or A and B (Say that five times fast!), to hit and the control stick to move. Not much here. (=)

Characters: ****

A big improvement from the GBC version. Instead of characters that have no business being in this title, they have almost every Mario character, including Paratroopa, Birdo, DK Jr., Shy Guy, Boo, Bowser, and Daisy. This is also Waluigi's first apperance! Each character has a stat. There is Speed, Technique, Tricky, All Around, and Power. You can also hold onto L and it will have a green L next to the player's name; this means Lefty. If you beat singles or doubles once, you will get a star when you press R; this means improved strength.

Let's face it, in this case, the GBC version doesn't stand a chance! (+++++++)

Modes: ****

Yes, they both have exhibition mode, but Mario Tennis 64 now has Ringshot, where you get points by hitting balls through rings (like Mario Golf), and a Piranha Plant Challenge, where Pirahna Plants shoot balls to your side of the court so you can hit them back and try to get the ball to pass the player on the opposite side (usually your doubles partner).

Exhibition mode is good because you get to practice games, single or double, and if you put the level on easy, it's easy, In fact, I get most of my points by my serve. You can choose from regular courts, courts you get from winning singles, and my favorite, the Bowser Court. It takes place in Bowser's Castle from MK64 and the court tilts, which can mess you up. There are three boxes over the net; hit your ball through them to get items. Press R to use them.

Banana: It stays on the ball your next hit and will land on the ground when the ball bounces. Players trip on them.
Red Shell: The shell goes after a player, and when it hits them they jump and are unable to hit the ball.
Green Shell: Same as the Red Shell, except it doesn't hone in on a player, and it shoots three shells.
Lighting Bolt: Other players get hit by it, weakening their hit.
Star: Makes you invincible to any Item.
Mushroom: Powers up your shot.

Ring shot is fun, because it's a differant way to play the game. Piranha Plant Challenge is like the tennis ball shooter, so it helps you practice. (+)

Gameplay: *

Well, here it has charts like real tournaments, but not the tour. Here is where GBC wins for once. (-)

Camera: ****

Guess what!!! You have the ability to go to the options for camera settings!!! Unlike GBC. *sigh* (+)

Bloopers/Glitches: **** The GBC version didn't have any but here there are quite a few.

When you are Mario and you win a game, you can still move around and act like a moron, same with Yoshi but not as much. Once in a battle, I scored all my points by hitting the ball on Bowser's head. He had a bad headache I assume! (+)

Fun Factor!: ****

Well, all the things I said above really gave it away. (+)

Replayability: ****

You can play anytime. If you beat a lot of tournaments, new courts will open. (+)

OVERALL: ****

Well, you can see it's better than the GBC version. I hope this Review helped. My recommendation for this game is if you like having fun, get it, well, rent it first. All in all, this is a great game, and I hope you'll share the fun.
