Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge Review

By Blue Boo

Greetings, people reading this! This is a Review of the new Banjo-Kazooie game for Gameboy Advance. Everyone loves Banjo-Kazooie! Right? RIGHT?! Well, I'm going to be using a scale of 1-7 stars, one being the least and seven being the highest. Let's start, shall we?

Story: ***1/2

Not too good... the prologue is pretty much part of the title screen, and the story is fast and uncreative. Basically, Klungo is pushing the boulder covering Grunty (since the first game of the series). Suddenly, he builds a giant robot version of her in about ten seconds. (Imagine what he could do in about a week...) Then her little purple ghost rises from the boulder and enters the suit. She has an idea to go back in time and stop Banjo and Kazooie from ever meeting. *dramatic reverb* But she does it by kidnapping the normal Kazooie and imprisoning her in the past. I'm not sure how that's gonna do it, but she's the "brilliant" witch, right?

Graphics: ******* SEVEN!!!

This is the part that blows me away. The graphics are incredible, mainly just the fact that Banjo and his little bird buddy are in 3D! And so are all the other characters. I mean, this is GBA.  And even with the 3D graphics the sprites move very smoothly. Grunty's mecha suit is very well done. Very shiiiiiiiinnnnyyyyy!!!

Moves: *****

Alright, this has a good side and a bad side. The good side is the fact that the moves are nicely made and make you get the feel of playing a normal Banjo-Kazooie game. The bad side is, there's nothing new. In fact, this takes place before Banjo-Tooie, and some of the moves "returned" from it. This includes the Bill Drill and some of the eggs. Speaking of eggs, a new kind is introduced in this game. Introducing, the revolutionary, ultra powerful, futuristic, BATTERY EGG!!! Yes, finally electric eggs have been made. The battery egg electrocutes enemies and can be used to pay tolls; the kind you found in Rusty Bucket Bay. Sadly, they took out one of the  best eggs of all, the Clockwork Egg. I wish I could see the little robot bird walking around... well, I guess that was invented later. The moves this time around are taught be Bottles' grandpa (or great grandpa), Bozzeye. Laugh at Kazooie's many comments on his eyes! Moving on...

Controls: ******

The controls are wonderful. The moves are easily explained and using them is easy as pie... mmm... pie... Anyway, there's not too many problems here. But the truth is, they're not perfect. I mean, it could be a bit easier to do the Flap Flip (high jump). It's hard to do it while running. But that's pretty much the only complaint, and that makes it non-perfect. Seven is perfect. Six equals good, but not perfect. Understand? No? Then you need to retake Math class, ya idiot!

Worlds: **1/2

Well, I saw a lot of repeats. I mean, several of the worlds are a lot like worlds from the other games. Breegull Beach = Treasure Trove Cove. Spiller's Harbor = Rusty Bucket Bay. Freezing Furnace = Hailfire Peaks. There are other worlds, but not many; another thing that makes this game not as good as it should be. But there is one world that's new and unique. It's known as Cliff Farm. Farm world is just what the Banjo-Kazooie series needed! Sadly, it's the first world, and that means that it's very easy. VERY easy. You can complete it in about five minutes if you hurry... :-(

Music and Sound Effects: ****

The sounds are pretty good. All the music suits the world or area that it's in. But this is probably the worst thing of all... NO BOSS REMIXES!!! That's like my favorite thing in the games next to the game itself! It's replaced with a lousy tune that plays every time you fight a boss. So it lost major points because of that. As for the sound effects, they were pretty nicely rendered. The ever popular character noises are back. Though I wish they hadn't put the shriek in Grunty's. It sounds weird. But overall, it's pretty good. This also applies for the sounds made when you use a move. But the boss remixes are gone, and that stinks. The final battle doesn't even have it's own music...

Difficulty: ...

... TOO EASY!!! The only thing with a LITTLE difficulty is the final battle... but that's still too easy! I mean, I don't like games being too hard, but this is stretching it...

Fun Factor!: ***

Very fun game... while it lasts. You can complete this in one day even if you stink at Banjo-Kazooie games. I'm not insulting Banjo-Kazooie. I love those games. I'm already anticipating Banjo-Threeie and may go through drastic measures (buying an X-Box!) to play it. This game, plain and simple, is too short.

Overall: ****

I was VERY disappointed when I got this. I wasted $30. Well, I suppose it isn't a complete waste... it's better to play it than not. The problems are...

1. The Jiggies are too easy to find.
2. Not enough Jiggies in the game. Therefore not many jiggies are required to enter worlds.
3. Just... too easy...
4. Too much focus on graphics... like we've never seen that before...

Recommendation:

Rent it if possible. If not, I'd suggest emulation. Just try to avoid buying it for $30 dollars. It's not worth it. But if you can, play this game. Although short, it's pretty well made. If you don't like challenges and absolutely stink at BK games, you might actually play it for more than three days! So it's your decision. Rent (strongly recommended), download (you might have to deal with legal stuff though...) or buy (try not to...).
