The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Review

By ShotNtheDark

Ahh, we can remember when the Legend of Zelda first debuted on NES in 1988 as an 8-bit game success. Mediocre graphics it didn't stop from becoming a nice success. Then came Zelda: A Link to the Past, perhaps one of the greatest SNES Zelda games of all time. Then Ocarina of Time for the N64 came along with the 3D adventure of Kink and its bustling world. So what's next? We get something nice yet a bit cartoonish: The Legend of Zelda:The Wind Waker for the GameCube, a cel-shaded version of Zelda. I remembered I was looking forward to this ever since Nintendo announced that Zelda would be coming to GameCube. I finally got this game just recently and it's a really great game that I've enjoyed ever since, well, just a few days ago. Anyway, here's what the game has:

Story: 10/10

Well the story is a bit different from the other Zelda games. To get started you are a young boy (ten or twelve maybe) and congrats, it's your birthday! Your grandmother has something "special" for you. It happens to be the green clothes from the past games. She tells you the story of how a young boy once saved Hyrule, and when every boy comes "of age", they too wear the clothes for the day. It is a tradition. Well, obviously you are the hero of this Zelda game. An extremely large bird takes your sister and the adventure begins. You basically have to thwart Ganon's plan to take over Hyrule and once again you venture though dungeons in order to obtain items and Heart Pieces; but don't worry, the dungeons are fun this time :)

Graphics: 9/10

The graphics blew me away when I first saw this game. Everything looks very detailed, like the backgrounds with the cel-shading, and there's no skipping at all. Almost everything flows with the characters. For example, when you get Link out of the ocean or a lake you can see the water dripping off his clothes, making it look realistic. The only thing I was disappointed in was the fact that the game has a cartoonish look to it. It reminded me of a Link to the Past in 3D. The cartoonish look wasn't really appealing to me but that's just a minor flaw.

Sound: 10/10

As stunning as the graphics are, the music is just as cool. It was very vibrant and full of life, and this game includes many different tunes. Some are freshly made while others are a remix from some of the past Zelda games. The sound effects themselves were incredible. You will hear such satisfying sounds as clashing swords, footsteps, explosions, cannonball fire, birds, cries for help, and so much more! Link himself speaks for the first time! You will hear him say one line but it speaks volumes for Zelda of old fans.

Difficulty: 7/10

Well this game wasn't too difficult for me and I don't think you will need something like a players guide even through you might come across a difficult problem from time to time. Zelda veterans might find this too easy but most will find it's just average and enjoyable.

Controls: 9/10

Well the controls are similar to Link's N64 games and are not difficult if you're familiar with them. I did however find some problems with controls when you get an item later on in the game, but otherwise the controls work very well. Controlling Link himself is also very easy and not tight at all. You won't don't have to worry about falling off ledges because of bad control.

Gameplay: 10/10

Oh yes, the most important part of any videogame: the gameplay. All games with Link are adventure-based. Items have always been plentiful and common in previous Zelda games, and the Wind Waker is no different. Treasure chests are placed mainly in dungeons containing key items and weapons, which will most likely be needed in killing the boss or completing a puzzle. Dungeons are a major aspect of the gameplay, and they are littered with enemies and various challenges. Most doors in dungeons are locked, but there is a key to be found which will unlock each door. Of course, a boss waits at the end of each dungeon. And then there's plenty of overworld exploration to do. The concept of gameplay is similar to previous Zelda games. I noticed that this game has a slightly faster pace than Ocarina of Time, which is just fine. So all and all, this game has an amazing and unbeatable gameplay like it should.

Replayability: 8/10

I think like in most Zelda games you would probley come back again for stuff like getting all the Heart Pieces, all the items, or just beating this game again in a different way. But I think you might want to play this game again after just beating it once.

Fun Factor!: 10/10

KABLAM!!! The Fun Factor is just very exquisite. Otherwise I can't say anything much but I never got bored with this game and it is indeed very enjoyable.

OVERALL: 9.2

I highly recommend this game to anyone who like the Zelda series, enjoys action/roleplaying adventures, and has about 30-40 hours to spend on videogames. However, I understand that everyone may not like the idea of this game so I would rent it first and if you do like it, then what are you waiting for?! BUY BUY BUY! Have fun!
