Graphics: ***
For the Gameboy, this is not bad at all! This game looks a lot like Super Mario Advance 2, except the Goombas and Koopa Troopas look different, and actually better than other Mario platformers. Some of the map screens look very good. The graphics are pretty good overall. (+)
Sound/Music: **
The sound and music is just mediocre. While I like the boss battle music, I'm not really a fan of all the other music in the game. The music for the Pumpkin Zone levels can get annoying at times. I don't really have much to say but the music and sound are average. (-)
Diffuculty: *1/2
I would probably say this game is harder than Super Mario Land, but it still is quite easy. Some stages, like Space Zone 2, are tough, but most of the stages are quite easy. The bosses are even easier than the levels! But I can't say the game is too easy, as some of those hard stages are tough. The coins seem too easy to get; I constantly reach 999 coins when I play. Overall, this game is just a bit on the easy side. (+)
Controls: ****
Excellent. I've never had problems with these controls. They are not slippery at all, and they are not tight either. Just perfect. (+)
Characters: ***
For the most part, the characters are good. I like the idea of having Wario, and I like how Tatanga is one of the bosses in the game. All the other bosses stink, though. I would rather have a real Mario boss, not a stupid bird that is incredibly hard to get hit by, or a trio of pigs that get faster when they get hit and only jump around. Most of the regular enemies are good, and there are lots of Mario enemies, including Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Piranha Plants, Bullet Bills, Boos, Blurps, and Venus Fire Traps, as well as some new enemies like Bopping Toady and Battle Beetle. There are some no-names for enemies, but it doesn't make too much of a difference. (+)
Items: *
The item selection is quite thin. Just Super Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, Starmen (which attach to the block it came from, like Fire Flowers), and 1-Up Hearts. The Bunny Carrot is a new item, which lets you float down very slowly. Other than that, the items are nothing special. (-)
Levels: ***1/2
Most of the levels in the game are very good. It is hard to say something bad about them. The Space Zone and Tree Zone levels are good ideas, as well as the submarine level in the Turtle Zone and the attic library level in the Macro Zone. The number of levels is about the same as Super Mario Bros., which doesn't make this game incredibly short. Still, I do wish there were a few more levels. Overall, I really like these levels, although they are not perfect. (+)
Replayability: 1/2
Once you beat the game, there is really not all that much to do. The only real reason to play this game again is for the fun, but that's it. It can get boring somewhat quickly after a while. (-)
Fun Factor!: ***
Yes, this game is pretty fun. Going through some levels can be quite fun, and the boss battles, despite the fact that they're short, can be fun as well. Not the most fun game I've played, but it is quite fun. (+)
Overall: **1/2
Super Mario Land 2 is not a bad game, and is certainly better than Super Mario Land, but it's not the best Mario side-scroller ever. It is above average though, so I do recommend trying it out sometime. It's lack of replayability is what hurts the game the most. If you like side-scrollers or Mario games, you should try this game out, as it's a good game, but not the best. (+)
