Mario Kart Double Dash Review

By Denny W. Koopa

Have you ever played a game people said it wouldn't be too good, magazines rate it at the top, and you think it's on your good side or bad side? This is the kind of game I'm reviewing. Better and worse than what I suspected. It's a more fun game than just any ordinary race car game. It has items and everything like the other Mario Karts. Here's how it goes on my list.

Platform: GameCube
Publisher: Nintendo
Rating: E for everyone

I will rate this on a 1-8 scale for driving points, 1 being best this time and 8 being bad. Here is the driving point scale: 1=10 pts, 2=8, 3=6, 4=4, 5=3, 6=2, 7=1, 8=Zip!

Graphics: 3

These graphics are good, really, but what do you suspect for a GameCube game? Some of the tracks have paper bushes though, which made it really horrible. Otherwise, they were good, but nothing that would surprise you. Total=6

Music: 2

Some of the music was catchy like the city music and stadium music, some were peaceful, and some were like the music you are listening to. But each fit the place well. The problem was the repetitive music. If all was repetitive, I'd give this a 3, but there was some music that was just in one place. The sounds were great too. Birdo keeps on buzzing though. But everyone likes the voices, except for the Super Mario 64 voice of Bowser Jr., who says my teacher's don't say it word, Yeah! You'll hear him all the time saying that! Total=14

Controls: 1

Mostly the same as Nintendo 64. A to accelerate, B for brakes, Control Stick to steer, Y or X to honk the horn or use an item (or A if you're playing one controller for the front and another for the back), R or L to use the skids, and Z to switch (Z at the same time in cooperative mode). Total=24

Characters: 1

Well, Lemmy basically listed the new racers in his poll and by accident named two of the four hidden ones. They each get their own kart, some unlockable. But each have a special item Lemmy didn't include, here is the list.

Mario and Luigi: Fireballs, red and green. Fire these and burn the thrower person/dino/Koopa/monkey.

Peach and Daisy: Heart. Use this as a safegaurd; run into an item, use it as yours.

Yoshi and Birdo: Yoshi/Birdo Eggs. Like Red Shells, these follow the people in front of you. Unlike it though, three items appear from the kart, err, egg. If it doesn't hit some kart, it will explode.

Baby Mario and Baby Luigi: Chain Chomp. Most unusual. Use it, they'll drag you through some of the race, let go, then be nonstop. But some weird things happen when two Chain Chomps meet.

Koopa and Paratroopa: Triple Shells. Regular items no longer, they are with these guys now.

DK and Diddy: Giant Banana. The name gives it all away.

Bowser and Bowser Jr.: Bowser Shell. Like a Green Shell, it just roams free, but with a giant size.

Wario and Waluigi: Bob-ombs. Bet you saw this one coming, from Mario Party, these guys obey Wario and his brother again.

There are also the enemies, but I'll include that in the next subject. Total=34

Tracks Grand Prix: 2

Some were just simple tracks while others just despise you.

Mushroom Cup

Luigi's Circuit: Same shape as last time, no tunnel, but a Chain Chomp. It's easy to master.

Peach Beach: Has nothing to do with Peach. It should be Sunshine Beach. or Delfino Beach. Has the same houses, same graphics, and your annoying friends from Gelato Beach, Cataquacks. In replay mode, you can hear a Pianta as if he just got squirted.

Baby Park: Pathetic! It's a coin shaped track, half pink, half blue, and it's surrounded by an amusement park, but it's not easy., It's Item Mania, get hit 12 times per lap guarantee, or you could just go and get hit by the rollercoaster.

Dry Dry Desert: Everyone's favorite cactus announcer is in a race track! There is also quicksand and a tornado.

Flower Cup

Mushroom Bridge: A nice town with traffic and beach houses, this stage has the most shortcuts and is fun. The bridge may remind you of the Golden State Bridge, but it looks more like the Cape Cod Canal Bridge, which at least I'm familiar with. Toad lives there!

Mario Circuit: Like Peach Circuit for Super Circuit, this place is surrounding Peach's Castle. There is a Chain Chomp here, and also some annoying Piranha Plants and wondering Goombas.

Daisy Cruiser: Ever hear of a track on a cruise? Not a jogging one, a race one? You can see this cruise in Peach Beach, Yoshi Circuit, and more places surrounded by ocean. In the dining room you may get sea sick, as the waves move and the boat tilts, moving the tables and boxes.

Waluigi Stadium: Have I seen this place before? Wario let Waluigi borrow his stadium, but Waluigi put in some rings of fire, fire bars, fake Piranha Pipes, and a half pipe. Ends with the final jump again.

Star Cup

Sherbet Land: No, penguins don't push you into icy water again, Shy Guys do. There are also Freezies, which freeze you when you touch them.

Mushroom City: Do you like Boston, L.A., Detroit, Great Salt Lake, and other big cities in night? How all the lights are bright through the windows? I do, and that's why this is my favorite place. The traffic bridge is just a detour, just go straight to the left next to the hole for a safer way. Toadette lives here!

Yoshi Circuit: Want to know why it's called Yoshi's Circuit? Because the track is shaped as Yoshi. There are Piranha Plants everywhere. You can never feel safe here.

D.K. Mountain: The place with paper bushes. The only enemies here are the boulders and the pin needle turns. The fun part is getting blasted out of the cannon.

Special Cup

Wario Colosseum: He outdid himself in Microgames Inc., and now he's outdone himself again. This is a fun track, filled with action and obstacles, that takes place in a Greek colosseum!

Dino Dino Jungle: No Yoshi, Bontos actually. All of Dorry's friends are here. There are geysers here to attack you too.

Bowser's Castle: Thunder, lightning, mud, haunted forest, Thwomps, oh my! Am I excluding anything? Yes, the Bowser statue that really shoots fire at you.

Rainbow Road: Another tradition. This time, it has parts with sides, parts with no sides, and parts with half and half. Great place to put in fun. The graphics are amazing and when you turn you hear crystals! Total=42

Battle Mode: 1

You have three modes now! You have the balloon battle but also Shine Theif and Bob-omb Blast! Shne thief is like tag, some couple gets the Shine and runs around trying not to get hit. In Bob-omb Blasts, each box has Bob-ombs in them and you need to hit your competitors three or four times. Total=52

Battle Stages: 6

Pretty pathetic. Nintendo GameCube was nice, but it's just a square. It's not the best, yet not the worst. I rank it third out of the origonal four. Pipe Plaza is my first, with warp pipes and a lot of space. Pipe Plaza keeps this from getting an 8, and two unlockable courses make this a 6. Cookie Land is basically Doughnut Hole with no pitfalls, just jimmies; rank second out of four. So what's last that put this down six spaces? Block City. Just a square with four block buildings, only one you can go through. Pity, real big pity.Total=54

Difficulty: 7

Wow! This is way bad for Nintendo! When you play 50 cc, it's too easy with one player. Move up to 100cc, everyone will pass you to make you come in 5th. I don't even want to talk about 150cc. If only, if only. Total=55

Fun Factor!: 3

You can get annoyed by the computers, and it can get boring at times, but it makes a good party game. Total=61

Overall: It's a good game overall if you like racing, but if you don't have much experiance with the Mario Kart games, you may want to pass on this one. This game got 61 out of 90 points, about two thirds. I hope you enjoy this Review and see if you agree with me when you've played it. See you next time for Denny's Reviews!
