Evolution Worlds is an RPG by Ubi Soft for the GameCube. It’s more or less a traditional RPG, but golden nonetheless. Classic turn-based goodness, dungeons, party members, it’s all golden. I will give each category a rating of 1-10, 10 being the highest. But before I begin, I’d like to share the best feature, worst feature, and, well, ugliest feature.
Best feature: Wide variety of weapons,
items, armor, skills, and whatnot.
Worst feature: Monetary system.
Just plain sickening: Only five slots?!
Anyhoo, let the Review get underway!
Plot: 8
More or less an anime. You start out as Mag Launcher with his friend, Linear Cannon, who are going on missions to get money for themselves along with their caretaker/butler, Gre Nade. But, sooner or later, they end up finding themselves fighting against bandits, finding secrets of the prehistoric civilization, and much more. Plenty of plot holes and adventures to keep you busy.
Characters: 8
Though there are not many main characters, each one is fully detailed in personality and battle attributes. Here is a list of them:
Mag Launcher: An adventurer from Pannam Town. Though he is usually calm and friendly, he can somewhat get angered and really do some damage. His Cyframe (the Airacomet) resembles a Swiss-Army knife.
Linear Cannon: A mysterious girl who appeared at the Launcher residence three years ago bearing a letter from Mag’s father. Ever since then, she has accompanied Mag wherever he goes, even monster-infested ruins!
Gre Nade: The butler of the Launcher family for years, he is now currently the caretaker of Mag and Linear. He is often found chastising Mag for his lack of confidence and diligence. Though he is old, he is next to deadly in combat.
Chain Gun: The only girl born to the Gun clan, she is an adversary powerful to behold. Though she constantly taunts Mag, telling him she’s more powerful than he, she secretly has a crush on him. Her Cyframe not only has a huge sword attached to its back, but it can also fly!
Pepper Box: A good-hearted young adult from another land, she is cheerful but somewhat outgoing. Her Cyframe is a multi-purpose gun that can not only hurt the enemy, but also heal her friends.
Carcano: A good-hearted thief just northeast of Museville. Though he often steals, he never hurts anyone or holds anything for ransom. His Cyframe is a perfect bandit, complete with a shovel, a drill, and a grappling hook.
Gameplay: 9
You walk around with Mag, Linear, and a third teammate of your choice (if you choose one, that is!) and go on adventures. You go on adventures to find Appraisal Items important to “The Society” (a group dedicated to solving prehistoric mysteries), as well as to earn money. With the help of your Cyframe, a device used primarily for combat, you defeat monsters as well as destroy obstacles. Cyframes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. For example, Mag’s Cyframe is a huge fist. The base of the Cyframe is strapped on Mag’s back and resembles a Swiss-Army knife. Not only does he have a fist, but he can equip more weapons onto his Cyframe slots, obviously used to carry spare weapons (which, I also might add, give you more skills). But watch out! If you ask anyone but Gre to aid you in a Society assignment, your pay will be deducted to your teammate. I nicked a point because it’s so hard to come across money.
Graphics: 6
Well, before this game's GameCube debut, it was to be on the Dreamcast. But, that never happened, so, it was moved to the GameCube. I think Nintendo got lazy and decided to leave it the way it was, because the graphics weren’t all that great. What saved it from getting a lousy rating were its cutscenes.
Battle System: 7
First off, you decide where your characters stand, the front, middle, or back row. Back ups defense but lowers attack, vice-versa with front row. Then, you have the option of attacking, defending, moving, escaping, or using a skill. Non-Cyframe users can choose from several categories of skills, while Cyframe users can choose from up to five Cyframe slots, or Cyframe equipment, to attack with.
Fun Factor!: 8
This is without a doubt the hardest section to grade, simply because it’s asking for an opinion. I suppose running around exploring ruins with no way to escape gets kinda boring after a while, but I find it excruciatingly fun for some reason…
Overall: 7
This is quite tough to grade too. Though it has a few flaws and questionable words, it’s still a golden RPG, and it should not flow astray from any gamers RPG library.
