Soul Calibur II Review

By Denny W. Koopa

This is one of my all-time favorite games. It’s a fighting game with a different story for each person you use. Anyways, here’s a Review of the game originally made by Sega, but the second installemt is for GameCube. I will rate it on a 1-4 scale. Also I will compare this to SSBM. + means better, - means worse, and = means equal.

Rated: T for Teens (Disgusting sight for young children and a little bit of cursing.)

Graphics: ****

What you would expect from a GameCube game, but all the people look real and the stages are wonderful! Such good graphics! SSBM had pretty much the same graphics, just smaller people. (=)

Sound: ****

All the people sound good with voices that fit them, well, those that have voices of course! The music can get catchy too! All the music fits in well with the stage. I didn’t like some of the music in SSBM so I think the sounds and music in Soul Calibur are better. After all, you didn’t hear much talking in SSBM. (+)

Controls: * and ½

Aww, and it was heading for three perfect scores in a row! At first when you start the game you just press any random button and find cool moves, but you won’t know how to use them. One person is good for using random buttons on, Maxi. He has numchucks and you can use awesome moves with them! After about three weeks you'll learn how to use moves, but they call the B button G, the Y button B, and the X button K. Weird. In Super Smash Brothers Melee, at least you know what you're doing and they name the buttons correctly! (-)

Gameplay: ****

To play this game, it’s sort of like Super Smash Brothers Melee. You have to fight people so you can get to the next stage. You have two lives, and to kill each opponents you have to knock them out of the ring or hit them enough to make their HP go down. You can use are vertical attacks, horizontal attacks, kicks, and throws. Throws cause the most damage. You press A+B or B+Y to throw. There’s also Team mode where your team faces another team, and Survival mode, where you have to survive as long as you can. SSBM had some of the same kind of gameplay, so it’s the same here. (=)

Characters: ****

Almost good in everything. Anyways, you got a variety of people to start out with. There's Cassandra, a girl who has a sword and shield just like Link, who is also in it, quieter than ever! They have a nasty Japanese girl, Taki; a mummy named Voldo who has diamonds to attack; and an evil swordsman named Raphael. Some more evil people are Nightmare, the dark knight; Ivy, a girl with a weird sword; and Astaroth, an ogre with a huge ax. I don’t know why Necred, the ogre who uses a green orb, isn’t evil… There’s also Mitsurugi the Samurai. Most men are good, but some girls are good fighters, such as the wind fighter Talim, and a swordswoman Xiangia (or something like that). My three favorite people are: third, Kilik, the one who uses one huge stick; second, Yung Sung, the boy who has a Chinese sword; and my favorite is Maxi, as I told you earlier. SSBM may have more characters because in total there are 22 characters in Soul Calibur, but the characters fit in the story more. (+)

Stages: ****

Lots and lots of stages! There’s a gloomy Chapel, Warfield, Pyramid, Jungle, Mountain, Windmill, Swamp, Library, Fountain, and more, including an underground pirate dock! The problem is, other than landscape, there’s nothing exciting happening. SSBM has a lot of stuff happening in the stages. (-)

Modes: ***

There are few modes and some are very hard. There’s an Arcade mode, where you fight a lot of people to get to the evil sword and destroy it or claim it, depending on who you are. There is also Weapon Hunter, which is like a story where you go through chapters completing all types of goals. There are some more, but those are the biggest two. I found the modes more exciting than SSBM Classic, Events, Target, etc. (+)

Multiplayer: **

You can only verse each other in battles, and only two people can at once. Kind of boring after a while… While in Super Smash Brothers, you don’t want to stop playing multiplayer! (-)

Replayability: ****

You can try to unlock stuff as long as you want! You earn gold so you can buy weapons for the characters to use. SSBM didn’t have much replayability, you just unlock all the trophies… (+)

Overall: ****

One of my favorite games- get it! You will have a fun time playing it. So it looks like that’s it for another one of my Reviews! So long! (+)
