Golden Sun: The Lost Age Review

By MaskedMan

System: GBA

This is one of those games that are easy to obsess over. Fighting monsters and other creatures that get in your way, using legendary axes, swords, rods, and other weapons. The sections will be rated out of 10, 10 being highest.

Storyline: 10

This game has a great storyline if you’ve played and beaten the first Golden Sun game. I won’t tell the story so I don’t give it away, but this game has many surprises at the end.

Graphics: 7

The graphics are great, but during battle they get a little messed up. For example, it doesn’t matter which enemy you fight, they still move frame by frame. Also, some bosses and enemies only have two frames of animation. This game still has great out of battle animation.

Sound and Music: 9

The music is perfecto in this game. The sound effects of talking and attacking dock one mark because they are the same everytime you do it. When the characters talk they just make beeping noises. The music is repetitive yet catchy.

Map: 5

This game has a great map, but it is very confusing. It’s easy until you get the boat. The boat lets you travel on half of the map until you have the wings. The wings let you go anywhere on the map. The only places you can’t go when you’re still in the boat are over black rocks, onto land without going on a river or beach, and off the world map. You can’t usually go into town with your boat. When you’re walking, the terrain is very large. Even when running you move slowly. I docked a lot of marks since it is very confusing where you have to go next.

Control: 8

The controls in this game are very advanced. You can set two special attacks to L and R while you’re on the world map or in a town or dungeon. In battle there are many things you can do. You can attack normally, defend, use Psynergy to attack or heal, use a Djinn to attack or heal, summon a monster if you have Djinn on standby, and use items. Some items in this game can even be used to attack for one use only. Some equipment can heal and sometimes revive a downed ally. This section would’ve gotten 10 if the Djinn weren’t so complex.

Strategy: 7

The strategy of this game is pretty much only in battle. In battle there are different combos you can do, like attacking with one person and then healing with the other. Different classes of your allies affect the whole battle.

Characters: 8

There are lots of characters in this game. The main character is Felix, the guy who wishes he could talk more than three times in the game. The main character of the new party that joins you is Isaac. He couldn’t talk in the first Golden Sun, but now he’s a chatterbox. The other characters in this game are Jenna, Sheba, Piers, Kraden, Karst, Agatio, Garet, Ivan, Mia, and Alex.

Items: 10

The items in this game are very helpful. Some of them you can just sell for cash and some you can use in battle. The worst kind of item in the game is the bone. The bone has no value. You cannot give it to anyone. You can keep it for no reason or just throw it away. The other items are equipment, which you equip to raise your stats. Sometimes equipment can be used as an item to heal someone (it’s helpful later in the game).

Difficulty: Hard

The bosses near the end of the game are extremely hard if you aren’t at a high level. Some of the bosses can launch certain moves that can KO in one hit. Some bosses have a huge amount of HP. Some can even use your attacks! The bosses, enemies, and the whole game are hard.

Fun Factor!: 10

This game is easy to get hooked on. It is fun to just listen to the great music while walking around trying to gain levels. It’s also fun to look for treasure underwater. This game is definitely 10/10 for fun.

Replay Value: 5

The game may be fun, but once you know all the secrets it isn’t as fun the second time you play.

Ending: 5

Surprising, yet I was disappointed. The very end was corny, and it makes you think there’s a Golden Sun 3…

Overall: 8

This game is definitely worth buying. The Player’s Guide is very helpful, and it makes the game go by a lot quicker.
