There is something special I have and it's called the Super Joy III. The Super Joy III lets you play with many games, it holds up to 76,000 games! Right now, I have no cartridges, but it does come with 76 games. One of them is Ice Climbers, which I will be reviewing for you old-school players.
The point of the game is to reach the top of the mountain without dieing. You will go through an icy peak to reach the top and destroy the pterodactyl that took your mountain. In order to get up to the mountain, you must hit the blocks until you can go through the next floor. As you go up, the screen scrolls up, so if you fall into the bottom of the screen, you are dead. There are enemies like a seal that uses ice to clog up the holes, a polar bear that scrolls up the screen by pounding the floor, and a few more.
I'll review on a scale of 0 to 4, where 0 is ice cold and 4 very cool. A * means one and a ` means half.
System: The Super Joy III (However,
it works the same as NES)
Rated: E for Everyone
Type: Arcade
Graphics: *`
Well, as far as the NES goes, the graphics are a little below average. The characters are okay and the objects are nice, but the veggies should look better and I could see a little more improvement.
Sound: *
Well, the music is something I can hum, especially the bonus song that made its way to SSBM. However, the sounds are a little unrealistic and a little annoying. I really hate the sound when the player dies. It sounds dumb. If the music didn't save this, the rating would be a definite zero.
Characters: *`
I saw a nice variety of characters. The graphics made them a little bad, but they're still good. However, why is a pterodactyl in the game? They can't survive the cold! Oh well. Video games just make no sense sometimes. The polar bear looked stupid with glasses and shorts. What is he doing? Going Miami or bust? Guess we'll never know.
Levels: *`
I like the concept of going to any mountain you choose, and the mountains were very semi-unique. However, some are just crazy hard and you're not very likely to pass. I was whizzing through the first six levels, but I got crushed in the seventh with those two clouds and a blocked floor. I kept hitting the block out, but the darn seal kept blocking it up! If that was hard, I sure didn't want to skip to the eighth level. Anyway, some of the obstacles that are in the game are pretty hard to avoid. You'd better watch your step in the mountains, or it's an untimely end for you!
Controls: **`
The controls are pretty standard, like most NES games: A to jump, B to use you hammer, and left and right to go, well, left and right! However, the problem is the jumping. Why is my character not moving left or right while jumping? Most of the time, I keep moving only a little bit and then, I die. This problem just ruins the game entirely.
Gameplay: *
Righty-o, this is exciting, struggling to survive in a mountain with a lot of hope to pass the seventh level and some very bad jumping. The horrible jumping just completely throws off the whole game, since you have to jump to the next floor and missing can cost you a life. If you don't jump at the right time, that's it, you lose. At least it has two player.
Items: `
Well, as far as items go, the only thing you can pick up are the vegetables in the bonus round and they don't look very good.
Replayability: `
This game won't last very long, since the jumping just doesn't work very well and going through the same hard levels that take all your lives doesn't seem worth it.
Fun Factor!: `
Focusing on surviving isn't fun, now is it? The hard levels just don't cut it for fun. At least with another player, you can stink together.
Final Score: `
Obviously, this game isn't worth a buy for you old-school gamers. The horrible jumping and the hard levels just kills the game. It isn't worth a buy and I'm not sure if there's any store that still rents NES games. This game is so not solid.
