Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Review

By Yoshi kid

MARIO'S FRIENDS NEED A LITTLE SPEECH CLASS...

RPGs make my brain twitch. I found myself playing Golden Sun, then my eye started twitching! And,I couldn't stop it until I turned off the game. Luckily, we have Paper Mario. I'm so glad that they have a small and easy to control inventory space. No need for all that mumbo jumbo that you don't want to hear or look at.

Even more luckily, they made a sequel on the GameCube! I got the game, jumping for joy out of the game store!

Since this game dosen't have so much inventory space, I don't twitch! This game will be rated on a 0-4 star scale, with 4 being awsome and 0 meaning pathitic.

Music: *

It's bland at best, and when you hear it over and over again it is annoying. Still, I was playing... and humming. So I think the music has some value to it, but not a whole lot.

Gameplay: ***

You are sent out to find seven Crystal Stars, but after you get the first one evil is watching you, then it's a race for the seven stars! You go through these neat lands to talk to people, or you find stuff they want so that they let you by so you can on with your mission. Each world has a problem with the boss that lurks there. You walk around a whole lot, so it is pretty annoying to get to a place that is in uncharted terrain. Most of the game is trading for stuff people want. Why don't they just let you pass with no hassle? The world is in peril. That's that.

Battles: ***1/2

You have an audience that is cheering you on most of the way. They might throw something at you too. You have standard jumping, and hammer techniques. You can also use special moves, items, and tactics. This time you can defend or superguard, which will help you in a lot of battles.T hey were trying to be clever, so the background might fall on you, which is cheap. I like the battles a lot in this game.

Dialogue: No stars

After I have beaten the dragon Hooktail (easily) I go through these cutscenes. First, Peach is captured and helpless. Then she walks in a room to meet the computer, TEC. TEC is talking, saying, "Oh I am so perfect," until Peach asks, "Do you love me?" FOR PETE'S SAKE! WHY WOULD PEACH ASK THAT?!

Worse, TEC, the so-called perfect computer, doesn't know. He keeps saying, "Show me love."

After that it turns into a soap opera. I DESPISE SOAP OPERAS!!! Bowser now knows of the Crystal Stars and is after them.

Normally, bad guys don't find out so early! Every time I beat a boss, I think, "Boy this is gonna be good." Yet time and time again I am reminded of the (not kidding) 7-15 minute-long cutscenes.

Graphics: **

I like them, but it's still the same as the first Paper Mario's graphics. There's not much improvement, but in the areas where there is improvement, you can see it.

Difficulty: No stars

I basically blew through everything until the final boss, which was not that much fun. Now, I can beat the final boss, but the cutscenes in and during the battle are annoying. Worse, it's ultra hard. I think the main reason is that it can attack with fourteen damage to all unless you use a certain party member. If you want to go to the item shops you'll have to go through a lot of walking. I got KO'd plenty. Then it's back to the final boss' cutscenes! It's no fun.

Characters: ***

The characters are cute and fun to mess around with, but their powers are serious and they help you get by tougher areas. You can even name your own Yoshi! All in all the characters look great, feel great, and are great. So I like them.

Fun Factor!: **

It depends on whether you liked the first Paper Mario, because this is doing most of the same things, it's just much, much, much easier.

Replayability: *

After you beat the game you don't have much to do. There is the Trouble Center to keep you occupied. Dang. My hands hurt. Must... keep... typing...

OVERALL: **

I expected a lot more out of this game, but I really liked it! No, seriously! This game has a lot of good sides, but the really bad sides mess up the game. I think the key thing that hurts the game is the dialogue. I say go pick it up, it's a great game. Just beware of the dialogue.
