Star Fox Assault Review

By Martin

Star Fox Assault recently came out the GameCube. The game is supposed to offer a perfect mix of the elements from Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Adventures, but does it? More importantly, does its ground elements overshadow the horrible ones of Adventures? We'll find out. This game is rated on a scale of 5, like most of my Reviews.

Graphics: 4.5

The graphics are very nice. The chracters look as realistic as it is possible for a fox flying a ship to look, and most of the level backgrounds also are of high quality. Unfortunately, some effects, such as the explosions, are hardly updated from SF64.

Multiplayer Characters: 2.5

Multiplayer is a nice touch, and the amount of characters should reflect this. Unfortunately, there are only six characters available in Multiplayer, two of which who must be unlocked. In addition to this, the characters are way too unbalanced. Krystal has incredibly low stats, and though her shield thing is a nice touch, it is hardly an equalizer. Wolf, on the other hand, has stats that are too high for any character to compete against except in Landmasters. Fox, meanwhile, has 3s and 4s in everything, making him nearly as cheap as Wolf. They should've given some closer stats to the characters and there should also be the rest of Star Wolf as well as a few other characters. Only six is a bit ridiculous, isn't it?

Sound: 3

The sounds of guns and such are realistic, but that's about all that is. The character voices, except for Krystal, Wolf, and Panther, will really grate your nerves. The background music is just small remixes of the same old Star Fox tunes (including the fact that Sauria has the exact same music as it did in Adventures). Plus, why couldn't they get the guy who played Oikonny in Star Fox 64 in this instead of the high-pitched helium-like voice he has in this?

Missions: 3.5

Most of the space missions feel different from each other, but the ground missions really do all feel the same for the most part. During Corneria, while you're running around shooting things, you'll be saying to yourself, "I could have swore I did this before but the targets weren't moving." Since at least part-ground missions take up six of the ten missions, the game feels quite repetitive. The most unique-feeling part besides the ships is when you're fighting on the wing of a ship, but this awesome feature is only done twice, both of them after ground missions that feel suspiciously similar. Plus, with only ten missions, the game is a bit too short.

Arwing: 5

The Arwing missions mostly feel different from each other. Each one is in the standard SF64 layout except the Arwing sections of 3 and 6, as well as mission 8, which will remind you a lot of the old Sector X mission. Ultimately the Arwing missions do an excellent job of reminding you of Star Fox 64's greatness.

Pilot: 4

The Pilot (on-foot) missions in Assault are better than the awful game Adventures off which they are based. All of the guns are certainly a good thing as well. Halo they're not, but the ground missions are a nice touch, although they can't stack up to the Arwing.

Landmaster: 2.5

The Landmaster is in this game as a mere enhancement on the Pilot missions in order to make you go faster and do more damage. The Landmaster really fails to serve a point in this game, which is sad considering how fun it was in 64.

Arwing Rides: 5

Two of the missions end with small gunning trips through the air on another ship's wing (the first is Falco's but I won't spoil the second). After each is a boss fight. Both of these are a ton of fun and quite challenging, though the bosses are a bit easy (especially in the second one where, if you have enough health left, then there's absolutely no chance of losing).

Fun Factor!: 5

Multiplayer is a ton of fun and the single player mode is excellent too. Each of the bosses plays differently and each gun in Multiplayer brings something new to the table.

Overall: 4.5

This game is excellent and worth the money... if you already have Resident Evil 4. If not, get that instead. Anyway, Star Fox Assault is a short game but a very good one. It finally gives Star Fox 64 the excellent sequel it deserves.
