I figure that I should establish a rating system before I continue. I will rate this game and all future ones on a scale of 1-10.
Graphics: 8
This is a harder rating to give. Spider-Man and the other major characters look downright awesome. This can't be said for the citizens of New York, unfortunately. They are pretty generic character models and they are repeated over and over. The environments themselves are pretty decent. The part I liked the most about them is the sheer level of detail. Example: You walk into a restaurant in the game; on a sign you can actually read the restaurant's daily special. Overall, the graphics neither disappoint nor impress.
Sound: 9.2
The sound is very good in this game. The music is very memorable and the main character's voice acting is great. The only thing that brings this down is the voices of the citizens, which are mediocre at best (except for the kid whining about his balloon, I loathe that). Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Bruce Campbell as the tour guide. Only one word to describe that: hilarious.
Story: 8
The story is decent, especially considering that this is a superhero game. The entire movie plot is in the game, with a couple of alterations for gameplay purposes. Of course, there are also a whole lot of story missions that have nothing to do with the movie (most of them involve fighting supervillians).
Controls:
- Getting Around: 8.5
The controls are pretty solid in this
department. It can be frustrating at times not having something to
swing off of (which happens rarely), but what really hurts this category
is the Central Park tree swinging. It is entirely too easy to (1) run into
the ground (mostly because it's too hilly), (2) shoot a webline that is
too short and causes you to move through your swing arc too early, or (3)
run into something (usually a tree) and lose all of your momentum. This
can and will happen in the city itself too, but not nearly as often. You
can be a master of the swing and still screw up in Central Park. It really
is a downer.
- Fighting: 9.6
The fighting controls in this game are great. The combo system was pure genius and all the buttons like the dodge and jump feel like they are in the right places. To boost this already phenominal fighting system there's spider reflexes. This does two things for you. The first and most obvious thing that it does is slow down everything around you (which makes dodging ten times easier). Secondly, it allows for enhanced attacks. Treyarch (the developers) really did some good work in this department.
Difficulty:
- Completing the Story Mode: 7.9
The difficulty of the story mode is just right. It makes each objective challenging without crossing the line of making it near impossible. To be perfectly honest, I've played through the game so many times that it really isn't so tough anymore (for the most part, some parts are tough no matter how many times you play them). Overall, this story has a slightly above average difficulty that dares you to overcome it.
- Completing the entire game: 10
My message for all of the completists out there (including myself, actually) who think that finishing this game off will be a walk in the park: Good luck, chump. This game is seriously tough to finish. I've logged in over 100 hours and I still haven't done everything (stalling out at about 96 percent complete). This game has so many things to collect and so many crazy challenges to complete that require all of your skills. I have to honestly say that this is the hardest game ever to polish off.
Fun Factor!: 10
This game is an absolute blast to play. A major factor in this is the sheer freedom given to you. As long as you are not on a story mission, New York is your playground. Oh yeah, Bruce Campbell makes the game all the more fun.
Overall: 8.7
This game is totally worth buying. This game will entertain you even if you're not a fan of Spider-Man (it might even convert you into fandom like it did me). Great fun for everyone (who meets the teen rating).
