Super Mario Advance 3 Review

By Bogmire

Super Mario Advance 3 for the GBA is a remake of Yoshis Island for the SNES. Here is the story...

A stork flies through the pre-dawn sky carrying two babies (Mario and luigi) in his bill, when Kamek the evil Magikoopa flies through the sky and snatches Luigi, also attacking the stork. Angry that he missed Mario he sends his gang of Toadies to search the Yoshis' island and get him back. Meanwhile, Mario falls out out of the stork's bill and falls towards Yoshi's Island. Mario lands on a Yoshi's back. Yoshi is confused and sees a map that the stork was using. He decides to talk to his friends about it. The Yoshis decide to set up a relay system with each Yoshi giving up Mario to the next Yoshi. It appears that the bond between the Brothers tells each of them where they are. The green Yoshi sets off on a journey with a gang of Toadies. It's up to you to reunite the two Bros!

On with the Review! This Review will be graded on a scale of 1-12 for the number of bosses in the game. (Difficulty and Mario Bros. scores are not included in the final score.) 1 is terrible and 12 is perfect.

Gameplay: 10

This game plays much different than other Mario games since you play as Yoshi. For one thing almost every level will have some sort of puzzle, whether it's finding a key to a locked door or trying to figure out how to get to the next part of the leval. Also in every level you can collect flowers, red coins, and stars. If you collect all of these you get a perfect score of 100. This can help you unlock new stages. In levels sometimes you will do a mini-battle with Bandit to get a special item. There are six worlds in the game, each with eight levels and two unlockable levels. In the fourth level you have a mini-boss battle, and in the eighth level you fight a boss. If you get hit by an enemy you will lose Baby Mario and a counter will start. You have to get Baby Mario before the Toadies do.

Sound: 11

This game has excellent sound, Yoshi even makes sounds and grunts when he jumps or pushes something. Very rare for a GBA game. some of the enemies even have voices! Yoshis' feet make noises when he walks in the snow, vases make shattering noises when they shatter, the only thing I can't stand is that awful whining sound Baby Mario makes when you lose him.

Music: 11

I love the soundtrack for this game, the music is very cheerful and peaceful. I like the intro music. I could fall asleep to it. It is very relaxing. Uggh... but one thing I don't like is the castle music, it is sad sounding and is unmemerable. This isn't the BEST soundtrack I ever heard.

Graphics: 12

The graphics in this game are very unique. How are they unique, you ask? Well everything looks like it was drawn with crayon and is very vivid and colorful. The graphics have somewhat of a 3D effect to them, because someimes Yoshi will be behind a background. Great parralex scrolling.

Value: 10

This is a pretty long game. It has 48 main levels in it. Some of you might think that this isn't a lot, but the levals are HUGE. Plus, there are 12 unlockable levels, six you earn buy beating the game. The last six
are earned by getting 100 points in the 48 main stages. You could spend a long time trying to rack up those points. But after that, there's not much to do.

Mario Bros: 0

Uggg... Horrible, boring remake of the Mario Bros. arcade version. So boring... Beat all the enemies and move on... Blah... blah... blah...

Difficulty: 9

This is a pretty difficult game but not borderline to impossible. Well actually, trying to get 100 points in each level is nearly impossible without a guidebook. But the main quest is of medium difficulty, and the bosses can be really easy. But overall it's a pretty challenging game.

Fun Factor!: 11

This is a very fun game to play, not quite as good as the prequel super mario world. But this game can be addicting. I don't know what it is but this game is missing something...

Overall: 11

This is a great game telling the story of Mario and Luigi's past. Finally a game where Yoshi is the star and not the sidekick like in Super Mario World. This is a must buy game only with minor flaws. Yoshi fans! This is the game for you!
