Game: Gremlins 2: The New Batch
Platform: NES
Company: Sunsoft
This game, of course, is based on the movie made in 1990. You'll understand the story if you've seen the movie (I haven't by the way). But first, the basics.
You play as Gizmo, and according to the cutscenes, you're released from your cage by Billy Peltzer. You go around throwing your weapon at enemies and you do your best to complete each level. If you’ve had enough, copy your password down and save the game for later.
I will rate on a scale of 0-10, 0 being awful, and 10 being awesome! Now let me start.
Gameplay: 8
This game is an action game. The game is shown from an overhead view and Gizmo jumps through obstacles and throws his weapon at enemies. I gave it an 8 because you don't come across games like these that much anymore, but it's not really incredible.
Sound: 10
The sounds almost sound too good to be on an NES! The music is catchy and the sound effects don't sound like an old Atari. If you've seen Gremlins (any of the two movies) then you'll hear that the music is loyal to the movie's music.
Graphics: 10
The graphics are great! And that's saying something when talking about an NES game. Yes, it looks as though a lot of effort was put into making the graphics. I think Gizmo was really hard to make, having to put in little sprites for all nine directions he faces. The creators didn't just make it where when Gizmo turns left and right, they just flip the sprite; they worked on it.
Game Length: 7
There are only five stages, each with two to three levels (including bosses). But it's really hard, so you might wind up restarting the same level over and over again! Meaning it's short if you're good, but long if you have to restart all the time.
Enemies: 9
The Gremlins are awesome! They provide
you with some challenge of getting through them, plus they have a small
bit of humor on their actions (Ex. Hat-throwing Gremlin). But it gets a
9 for the hopping tomatoes in stage 1. Tomatoes can't move on their own,
of course!
Bosses: 9
All the bosses are big Gremlins with some sort of specialty. The only thing is that all the bosses have only two attacks: one is running into Gizmo, and the other is their main attack.
Weapons: 7
The weapons change every time Gizmo completes a stage. It doesn't get a perfect score due to how weapon changes really don't matter since the levels get hard as well. Here is the list...
Stage 1: Tomatoes (Weak throw, but you're
up against weak enemies, so it doesn't matter)
Stage 2: Match Fire (Almost like the
tomato, only a tad bit stronger)
Stage 3: Paperclip (Throws far, you're
going to need that)
Stage 4: Bow and Pencil (Shoots far
and rapidly, very good)
Stage 5: Bow and Flaming Pencil (Doesn't
shoot very far, but it usually takes Gremlins down in one shot)
Items: 8
If it weren't for the items, you could never beat the game, but some items only appear once or twice in the game! The items I think are most helpful are the Gizmo extra life and the balloon.
Shop: 6
The sad thing is, you can only buy one item in the shop, and it has three items to choose from. Sometimes the item you need in order to survive is not in stores, so you have to settle for another item. But it gets a decently high score due to the fact that if there were no shop, then poor little Gizmo would die all the time.
Difficulty: 10
If there's one thing you can't say about this game, it's that it’s easy (unless you're some kind of super gamer). Be thankful that you’ve got a password system here, this game is HARD!!! It starts getting real hard on stage 3, and you'll need to start buying items in order to survive! Most of the time, Gizmo has to maneuver on conveyer belts, jump over countless traps, and trust me, he'll fall down into bottomless pits a whole lot (whether you're good or bad at the game, I guarantee that he will), and he'll also get hurt by many enemies and other things. It's so hard that you'll want to pull your hair out, especially when you're trying to beat the Electric Gremlin. I barely beat that monster (Luck, just luck).
Overall: 6
The game is fun for a movie-based game, but it gets this rating. The difficulty and item shop was the main reason why it got this rating. I'd buy it just because it's fun and offers me a wide range of challenge. So I say only buy it if you're truly sick of really easy games that the world is flooded with today. And along the way, you might want to pick up the movie and get the story down.
