Game: Pikmin 2
Platform: GameCube
Company: Nintendo
This game is a rather successful sequel to the first Pikmin in my opinion. Pikmin are creatures that appeal to both boys and girls! Cuteness for the girls, and toughness for the boys! Here is the story.
During Captain Olimar's absence from Hocotate, the Hocotate Frieght company has gone into deep debt. Captain Olimar returns to Hocotate to find out the news, the President had to pay Louie for his great loss. But soon they find out that the Pikmin planet (It looks a lot like Earth in many ways) had treasures worth a lot of Pokos, so the President sends Olimar and Louie to search there for the sake of their company.
I will rate on a scale of 0-10, 0 being awful and 10 being awesome! Now let me start.
Gameplay: 10
The gameplay is 3D movement. You can control huge hoards of Pikmin and guide them through to collect treasure, beat down enemies, and build passages. Unlike the first Pikmin, now you can have two commanders at hand, how convenient!
Sound: 10
Jump into the water, you can tell it sounds so real. Plus most of the sounds from the first Pikmin are in Pikmin 2! If you run into clovers, it makes a fine rustling sound. The music in a level always changes in ways, like if you're fighting an enemy, it'll have more sounds within the music, and it changes depending if it is day or night.
Graphics: 10
Everything looks so realistic and natural. The enviroment on the game isn't too much different than the enviroment outside. All I can say is, nothing is really cheesy with the graphics.
Game Length: 10
Many different players play Pikmin 2 in a certain style, but it took me around 40 days in game terms to pay off debt and collect all of the treasure. So it is a pretty long game, it can take you about 30-50 days to complete the game.
Enemies: 7
All of the enemies are fine in graphics, but some of them are stupid and frustrating to get by. I mean, seriously, the Firey Bulblax and the Gatling Groink are a few enemies that can make you think "It's hopeless." Some of the enemies are necessary to fight in order to collect a certain treasure or something. The creatures can eat a lot of your Pikmin, and you probably won't have enough to carry treasure by the end of the fight. But they ARE a good source of Pikmin seeds, you know.
Producing Pikmin: 8
It's as easy as pie, pick up a pellet with your Pikmin group and allow them to carry it back to their Onion. When they sprout, pluck them and wala, a Pikmin unit! But what if you're low on blue Pikmin in order to obtain a giant red pellet out of the water for your red Pikmin? You'll need to rearrange your team of Pikmin in order to obtain that pellet. And producing purple and white Pikmin requires purple and white-colored flowers for you to throw Pikmin in, you don't achieve Onions for the purple and white Pikmin. But those flowers won't just appear out of nowhere, you've got to go underground and throw Pikmin in them, and the worse thing is, they disappear after so many Pikmin are thrown into the flower.
Using Pikmin: 5
This has got to be the biggest problem with Pikmin. Sure, fighting creatures with them and collecting treasure is good, but these Pikmin do really stupid things at times. First off, Pikmin sometimes don't take orders, like if you call them back away from some gravel or grass they're trying to dig up, about one or two of them always go back to work. Secondly, when you're walking with Pikmin, some of them might trip or fall, and you'll need to go back and retrieve them. And lastly, when you leave them alone, they usually go off to attack a nearby enemy or work on something you didn't instruct them to do, they might try to work on an electrical device that would shock half of them... There goes part of your army, dying from complete stupidity. So you should always treat your Pikmin with extra attention or else they'll do something that'll make you slap your face in disappointment.
Cuteness: 10
Yes, I put down a cuteness rating, Pikmin are really cute. But they aren't the only creatures in this game that are cute! Dwarf Bulborbs are sweet, and the Bulbmin are cute also. It's really cute how the Pikmin sing melodies when you're traveling with them.
Piklopedia and Treasure Hoard: 10
Both are nice features to check out. As for the Piklopedia, you can check out all of the enemy creatures you have encountered, watch how they react when you toss a few Pikpik carrots around them, and see Olimar's studies of creature's habits and Louie's recipe of creature just as well. And for the treasure hoard, you can view the treasures you have collected and see the advertisings and notes on them.
Environment: 7
Sure the enviroment is nice and all, but it can be a real doozy to get through sometimes. Like for instance, in an area, there is a Firey Bulblax on a small island surrounded by water. You know red Pikmin are the only things that can kill the Firey Bulblax, but you also know that they lack the gills that the blue Pikmin have to move in water, so it is a rather hard thing to get through. When you're underground, it can be dark and you can't really see the edge of the platform or the enemies, so you might have a hard time there too.
2-Player Modes: 9
It's fun to have a buddy to play with in Battle mode or Challenge mode, the only problem is the fact that in Challenge mode, it can be sorta awkward to share Pikmin, especially if one needs more Pikmin for a certain part.
Difficulty: 9
Pikmin 2 can give you a hard time! Deadly creatures cover every inch of ground, and you have to collect certain amounts of Pikmin in order to collect treasure. Special thanks for such high difficulty goes to... *stares at "Using Pikmin" data and growls* But the good thing is, you can use all the time you want to produce Pikmin armies.
Overall: 8
Well, so it isn't one of the greatest games ever, but it is a good game. Any fan of the original Pikmin should buy it, I call it "A game that should be played at least once". Buy it and I bet you'll have a wonderous time with the game!
