Pokemon XD: Gale Of Darkness Review

By Bob's revenge

Bob's revenge here. This is my first Review. Personally, I'm a big Pokemon fan. Who says it's kiddy? Just look at Ho-oh, Lugia, Mewtwo, Groudon, Kyogre, Tryanitar, Areodactyl, and many others. I do admit Pikachu is pretty awful, though. I had high expectations for this, and was severely disappointed. Enough of my ranting and on to the Review, which I'll do on a one to ten scale, one being the worst.

Graphics: 8

The graphics are pretty good, unlike the rest of this game, and graphics don't matter much anyway. I hate the fact that the sprites are ripped from Pokemon Colloseum, which had its sprites of the original 251 Pokemon ripped from Pokemon Stadium 2.

Sound: 9

The sounds are also good, though that does not make a good game, similar to graphics. I really like Mirror B's battle theme.

Difficulty: 0

Good lord, there's no difficulty in this game. In fact, the main difficulty comes from not having a good amount of wild Pokemon in this, making it hard to train effectively. But it doesn't really matter; your opponents are so badly trained that you can wipe them out in ten turns.

Story: 3

The storyline is also non-existent. Basically, Shadow Lugia steals a random ship, and you tackle Chiper again. The leader of Chiper plot twist isn't very, um, twisty.

Characters: 5

Oh, we have an annoying little sister, a moron scientist, and only FOUR PEOPLE AT LEAST FROM COLLOSEUM! A ton of people lack emotion.

Modes: 0

Only one mode?! WHAT?! Colloseum at least had a battle mode. In this, you have to play story mode. At least there are two minigames. Battle Bingo gets old fast, and Battle CDs are the only reason I was playing this game.

Gameplay: -999,999,999,999,999

All right, here it goes.  I could tolerate Colloseum, but this is too much. The purify chamber is practically the only way you'll get your Pokemon purified, since it takes so dang long to purify them yourself. It takes practically ten minutes to get to the next fight. What's in between that, you ask? Nothing but long, long corridors. You have no possible way of going faster in this, so it takes five minutes just to navigate one room. I am dumbfounded at the stupitidy of some of these opponents. They don't use the combos they should, and switching is non-existent. Many of the game locations are old locations. The only reason to play this is to get Shadow Lugia. I stopped playing when I got a mystic ticket. If you don't have any good double battle strategies, you're doomed. This is because EVERY single battle is a double battle. Some Pokemon fans hate how in this, the routes are taken away. Again, that was also done in Colloseum, but I could tolerate it then. Shadow moves practically RUIN the battle system here by making the shadow attacks super effective against every Pokemon execpt other shadows. In fact, if you battle the final boss with a free slot open when you catch Shadow Lugia, you can send out Shadow Lugia and he will repel ANY attack thrown at him like a pancake. The first boss has a Lv. 18 Shadow! That low level?! In Colloseum, the first boss had a Lv. 35 Sudowudo! You actually do have a lot of room to explore, but a slow movement speed ruins that.

Replayability: 0

After you get Mirror B's Shadow Dragonite, you'll NEVER want to play again.

Overall: 1

If you treasure your sanity, don't get this. Get Fire Red, Leaf Green, and Emerald, but not this. Only play if you're desperate for Lugia.
