Animal Crossing: Wild World Review

Genre: Life Simulator
Platform: Nintendo DS
Developer: Nintendo
ESRB Rating: E for Everyone (You might wanna keep the youngest ones away – lots of text)

You’re currently reading my Review of Animal Crossing Wild World, for the Nintendo DS. In this Review, I’ll rate the game from 1 to 100 points.

Graphics: 95
The graphics are wonderful. Better than on the GameCube, even. Sure, all the faces look painted on and a lot of objects are 2D, but do we really need more? No way. The graphics in this game are genius; they’re pretty much flawless.

Music: 98
Charming, heart-warming music plays all day long in the town, changing each hour. Fantastic. The music in the GameCube version is slightly better, but that doesn’t mean anything. The K.K. music is great, too. K.K. Ragtime is the best music ever. Oh, and try wearing a headset when the sound is on stereo. Your ears will be in heaven.

Sound Effects: 90
So detailed. Your footsteps are incredibly realistic. The sound of the footsteps may even change when you change the carpet in your house. One second, you will hear the hollow sound of the bamboo floor you’re walking on, the next moment you’ll be making a loud clanking noise on a steel flooring. The only thing that pulls the score down is the Animalese language. In the GameCube version, you could almost hear every word the animals said. But in this game, you can barely hear the last word in a sentence. =(

Difficulty: Varying (Not rated)
Yes, the difficulty is incredibly varying. It is hard for young people to play, as you’ll be reading stuff almost more than you move around in town. But at the same time, it isn’t difficult to take a stroll at the beach, repeatedly pressing B to pick up shells. So it’s up to you to decide if the game is difficult or easy.

Characters: 100
Another excellent score. There are 144 neighbors in the whole game (unless I counted wrong). There are also tons of other NPCs. There are lots of personalities for the neighbors too. And some of the NPCs can be interacted with so much that you, in fact, become close friends with them, and they’ll share large stories about life. Some of them also get depressed on certain days. All in all, the characters couldn’t get any better.

Controls: 95
Controls are great too. You run by holding L, R, or B. B is also used to pick up things. A is used to interact with things. Press X to show the map and Y to show your inventory. For a shortcut to the chat box (Yes, chat box. You read that right) press Select. And Start is used to Save and Quit. If you prefer to use the stylus, no problem. It can do almost everything the buttons can do. The only thing that I don’t like is that, since it takes forever to write with the buttons, I have to switch each time I need to. But that’s no big deal, since I rarely write.

Items: 92
There are so many items. Furniture, headgear, glasses, mustaches, shirts, fruit, fossils, turnips, paper, flowers, tree saplings, seashells, bottle mail… you name it. I bet that it will take a person several months to ever touch all the items, even with the help of a buddy or thirty-two (the amount your Friends List can hold). How they managed to put all of this into this little game card beats me.

Story: 88
It gets a little thin here. You are a human who moves to a new town, but because you have no money, you have to work for a raccoon. Sure, it is funny, but what the…? Who moves without having money? Anyway, from here, your goal is to pay the raccoon that is Tom Nook millions (I’m not joking) of Bells, the game’s currency to get a bigger house. No good story, no. But I guess it doesn’t really need a good story either, so I won’t give it a bad score.

Length: Infinite, literally
Yeah, I can’t rate this simply because the length of the game is infinite. It never ends. The closest to the end you’ll come is when K.K. Slider is done “singing” and the credits have rolled. So I’ll leave this unrated.

Replay Value: 85
There’s almost always something to do. Fish, dig for fossils, sell stuff (that’s what I do the most of the time), talk to neighbors until they become mad, and of course visit other towns via Wi-Fi. HOWEVER, the game does get repetitive. Every simulator does. After your 30th day of doing this over and over, you will in fact get bored.

OVERALL: 93
I know I may sound like a real fanboy now, but… This game is fantastic. Awesome. Get it. Now. You have to.
