Gunstar Super Heroes is set after the
original Gunstars kill a being called Golden Silver. The explosion of it
destroyed Earth’s moon and separated it into four different moons. Man
colonized the moons, but an evil organization called The Empire wants to
reawaken Golden Silver. They built a fifth moon and are trying to obtain
these gems, which you must try to get before them as either Red or Blue.
The story is very vague when you play it with one character on easy, but
if you play each difficulty with each character, the story will become
clear. Some parts are weird and the vagueness in the beginning are the
reasons it's only a 7.
Graphics: 7
The graphics, while being better than
most graphics, ruined some of the old environments and characters, but
in some instances made them better. I did not like how Green looked or
Yellow compared to their old selves, and I think Red didn’t need the blush
on her cheeks all the time. What wasn’t good about them is that the cutscenes
only used the same few backgrounds and facial expressions.
Sound: 8
The music in this game was awesome,
bringing back songs from the original Gunstars. There were two huge mistakes
though, they didn’t give Orange his old death sound or Crash his awesome
laugh! Those two things made those characters awesome in the original.
One new addition was good though, giving them voices. All of them are good,
except Pink’s intro, which sounds like she’s talking about the Death Star
from Star Wars. Other than that, most sound effects were fine.
Characters: 9
The character in this game are great
and memorable, they each have unique personalities and are named after
colors! Only the main characters and main bosses are named after colors,
though. The small enemies are decent, and minibosses were fine, except
the junkyard rat, who was ugly and moved hideously.
Bosses: 8
The bosses in this game are great; while
some are super easy, others are frustratingly hard, which gives it an equal
balance. Minibosses are also good, except jthe unkyard rat and the changed
smiling face boss. Most bosses are from the original and changed, sometimes
dramatically. The new bosses, however, were not that interesting.
Levels: 7
Each level is divided into subsections
in case you die. You can access the subsections from the level select menu.
Many of the levels were good, but World 2 was terrible in Hard mode. The
boss was too strong and you practically had to make it there with full
health to escape, then you go to the next subsection with barely any life.
World 4 was by far the best; with the casino full of minibosses, this level
redeemed the rating.
Length: 3
This is a very short game, in one difficulty
there are only 7 levels, usually cleared in about 45 minutes each. The
difficulties do add some spice to the levels, stretching the time for each
about 10 minutes, but it is still pretty short.
Gameplay: 10
This is a shooting game, where Red and
Blue each have three guns, one unique to them, which they can use and then
launch a super powered form. There are three ways to fight. Some levels
you explore on foot, others in an airplane or spaceship, and others on
top of the ship, shooting your guns to safely guide the ship. The gameplay
is addictive, but sometimes, if you play a level too much, it may get boring.
Most boss fights are fun to replay, so if you’re tired of the level, just
fight the boss in his subsection!
Replayability: 5
Unless you want a challenge or more
story, the game is pretty useless afterwards. Sometimes you may be drawn
in to play it again, but it won’t keep your attention as long as most games.
It is still fun to replay, but kind of lacks worth after you know the whole
story.
Overall: 7
It’s a great game, but its short length and nothing after hard mode really cut it back. The story, characters, levels, and bosses are great, but are not enough to last along time. If it only had co-op like the original…
