Pikmin Review

By Yoshi_Lover

Hello viewers! I am going to review the game Pikmin, one of the earlier released games for the GameCube. For those people who want to know specifics, this game is under the action/adventure genre and is rated E for Everyone.

Pikmin, by the way, are small, plant-like animals that resemble ants in their description (being able to carry masses heavier than themselves, can take down enemies if in large groups, etc). Only 100 can be on the field, managed or not.

Let me tell you the plotline:
Captain Olimar (the player) had been traveling through the solar system for an intergalactic vacation. As he was riding in his ship, The Dolphin, a meteor crashed into the ship, causing it to fall into a nearby planet’s orbit. The ship burned and separated into 30 different parts (not including the hulk of the rocket), leaving Olimar with the frame of his ship. He found that the planet was covered in a toxic gas: Oxygen! He only has 30 days to collect all of his rocket parts before he gives in to the planet’s toxins. Once he landed, he found a strange object in the ground. As he approached it, it  popped from the ground and produced a seed. The seed was a Pikmin, named after a brand of carrots that it resembled. With the aid of the Pikmin, Captain Olimar must collect all of his ship parts!

The days themselves are approximately 15 minutes each, and you must successfully use the Pikmin to battle, destroy, carry, and reproduce throughout the game. A quick brief on each Pikmin:

Red Pikmin: Invulnerable to fire and considered the strongest. Have noses.

Yellow Pikmin: The lightest of the Pikmin can hold bomb rocks. Have ears.

Blue Pikmin: Pikmin that can swim and act like lifeguards to the others. Have mouths.

Okay, now onto the Review. I will be scoring on a scale of 1 to 5 for the different areas available, with 1 being bad and 5 being great.

Story: 4 (Good)
I thought that the game had a strong plot that makes sense with all the resulting actions (such as the time limit and the location itself). However, there are very small odds of a meteor crashing into a spaceship nearby a planet’s orbit. Olimar must be pretty unlucky for that to happen to him. But still, it was a good story and it deserves a 4/5.

Difficulty: 3 (Normal)
For my first time playing it, I would get discouraged because I didn’t get a rocket part on a day or half of my Pikmin army got eaten by enemies. But when I understood the game more, then I was able to play it more easily. Some people say that it is easy, but they might have been more experienced than me. There, of course, is a strategy floating around from Nintendo in how to beat it in 23 (Pikmin) days, but I didn’t use that. What is fun in this game are the puzzles that you must solve in order to advance. No, they aren’t puzzles, but like how you have to use the Pikmin in a certain way in order to collect a ship part. “Puzzles” involve using Blue Pikmin to transform into Yellow Pikmin on an island surrounded in water and finding a way to return them to shore. Of course there are harder challenges in the game, but I’ll leave those to you.

Sounds: 5 (Great)
Everything sounds so realistic. From walking in water to footsteps from large enemies, this game puts every sound to its purpose. I’m serious, though. This is one of the first releases to have such good game sounds. That’s why I give it a 5/5.

Graphics: 5 (Great)
Just as flawless as the sounds, soft graphics with only few “pixel points”. You won’t see much of anything sharp like pixels. I think that Nintendo did have really good graphics with the 2001 lineup, don’t you?

Characters: 3 (Fair)
Not very many important characters except Olimar and the Pikmin. But if you look around and watch the enemies, then you can see that they are forces to be reckoned with. Olimar mentions his family during the game, but we never see them. It would’ve been nice, though…

Fun Factor!: 4 (Good)
I found this game both fun and challenging. But, as mentioned in the Difficulty area, people use online strategies to solve the game. But is that to blame? No. The fact is, anyone could finish the game in even half of the time given, even without the strategy. Then all that is left is to create Pikmin in the last 15 days of the game. As for me, I loved this game and have rated it "good" because of difficulty lowering it.

Overall: 4 (Good)
It is a very fun game and should be treated as such. If you are into games that you command, then this is a game calling for you. Nintendo fans should consider the game and at least rent it. The game sells for about twenty dollars today, so if you like it, then I say buy it.
