Sonic Riders Review

Sonic Riders is a new type of racing game. Instead of racing on foot or in a car, characters come equipped with special hover boards, hover skates, and hover scooters.

Story: 5

Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails are exploring Future City trying to find the
Chaos Emeralds. The eventually find one, but at that moment they are then ambushed by a gang of feathered bandits ridding on hover boards calling themselves the Babylon Rogues. One of them falls off his board and is picked up by another. Sonic, in an attempt to catch the Rogues, picks up the hover board and begins riding it. However, Sonic loses his footing, and the bandits as well.

The next day Sonic and the gang are surprised to find that Eggman is hosting a competition calling it the EX Grand Prix, a race where you ride extreme gear.
He requires that all participants pay one Chaos Emerald to race. Fortunately, Sonic has one. However, so do the Babylon Rogues, and they’re in the top three spots. Well of course, Sonic must join in to find out what Eggman’s up to, and
Thus, the opening to the story.

Gameplay: 9

I found the controls to be easy to handle. The left and right triggers allow you to slow down, and using the both of them in unison creates a tornado, which (if you are lucky) can stop opponent in their tracks.  Boost and attacking are the same thing. If you boost right next to or on an opponent then your character performs a special attack. By collecting rings you gain levels, which increase your character's attack. You have to keep an eye on your air meter, which is constantly being drained by boost, braking, tornados, and just by racing all together. You regain air by doing tricks in the air, stepping into pit stops, and going on special parts of the track.

Unique Style: 10

Unique game, unique style. Sonic Riders is a style of its own, allowing characters to not only select their racer but also select different types of Extreme Gear. Each Gear is unique and most Gears can be used by multiple people. Some Gears are exclusive only to a select group of people or just one person.

There are three types of character to play as, Speed, Power, and Flight. Each plays in their own unique way that allows them to gain air differently. Speed character ride on rails, flight characters fly through rings, and power characters crush any breakable object in their way (wow, that's like so hard, LOL)  Each character is unique and different to play as, forcing you to adjust to each character's attributes if you want to win.

Sound:  8

The music is pretty good and worthwhile. Unlike previous Sonic games, where you have to beat the entire game to unlock the full opening theme, Sonic Riders allows you to listen to it right from the beginning. The music is Sonic-style and worth listening to for a while, and seems to blend in with the environment. Cars sound real as do waterfalls and so on and so forth.

Graphics: 6

Characters look three-dimensional and have very few graphic flaws in them if any.

Environments tend to get a little bit... questionable when you fall off the edge and you can see they're floating in the air.  his is a small flaw and probably only noticeable in few circumstances.

I have yet to find any glitches in the game.

The graphics, regrettably, are only above average, seeing as many games are trying to push graphical limits, what with the X-Box 360.

Extras: 5

There is plenty of replay value but not enough to keep you aroused for long.

There is a missions mode and a grand prix mode, which will help you unlock more content and earn Rings for buying new Gear.

There is a survival mode where you fight or pretty much play keep away with a Chaos Emerald. I don't care for those two modes, however.

Characters: 5

Regrettably enough, there are not many new characters to unlock. However, this is balanced out by the three new characters, Jet, Wave, and Storm, as well as the two Eggman Robots known as the E-10000 series (seems like Eggman keeps adding more Zeros to his machine's names, next thing you know we'll have an E-100000000000000 series robot). However, these are about the only new characters in the game. There are some cameo appearances by characters in other games, but chances are you won't know where they came from except maybe AiAi.

The story mode for once doesn't include Super Sonic, but you can unlock him. Other than that, old characters make a reappearance, such as Amy, Shadow, Rouge, and Cream, to name most of them. As well, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles have to be in the game. The characters are good but since most of them have been seen before there's not enough originality to make it great.

Overall: 9/10

This game is pretty good, and despite its minor flaws it is a very fun game.  I wouldn't say it's the best game ever made, but it's pretty fun.
