Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Review

By Yoshi_Lover

Hello again, viewers! For my second Review I will talk about Ocarina of Time from the Zelda series. Released in ’98 for the N64, Ocarina of Time was the first of the 3D Zelda games to be released. It's rating is E for everyone, and I will also make some suggestions at the end of my Review.

NOTE: SPOILERS FOLLOW AHEAD

Here is the story:

Part One:
Deep in the Kokiri Forest there was a boy without a fairy (a.k.a. Link), sleeping in his bed. As he was doing so, a man in dark, an evil man, placed a death curse upon the Great Deku Tree, father of all Kokiri. The Great Deku Tree called a fairy, Navi, to go seek Link and bring him there. After Navi found Link, they went to the Great Deku Tree to try removing the spell. They defeated the parasite within that caused the curse, but it was too late. Once they got out, the Deku Tree told Link of three spiritual stones that would open the Sacred Realm, home to the Triforce. If an evil man received this, then he could become ruler of the world. But if an innocent were to grab then, then peace would return to the world. The Deku Tree gave one of the stones to Link. Link then set out on a  quest to find the other two spiritual stones to prevent the man from opening the Sacred Realm.

Part Two:
After receiving all three spiritual stones Link traveled to the Temple of Time, home to the Sacred Realm. However, as soon as he made it near the entrance to Hyrule Castle town, Princess Zelda and her caretaker Impa rode away from the evil man Ganondorf. Ganondorf was the same man who placed the curse and the same man who would try conquering the world. While escaping, Zelda threw the Ocarina of Time into the river surrounding Castle town. Link grabbed the Ocarina and set out to the temple. After opening the  temple he grabbed the Master Sword, which brought him seven years into the future. The land was then ruled by Ganondorf, and Link needed to find all six sage medallions in order to seal Ganondorf into the Sacred Realm.

Dang that was long! Oh, I did leave out a few details, but I didn’t want to bore you guys.

… Hello? You guys are still here? Oh, thank goodness! Okay, now onto the Review. I will rate on a scale of 1 to 5 under each category.

Story: 5 (Great)
It just keeps the player entertained! The story keeps up to date, like a Fun Fiction in Lemmy’s Land! I cannot say more: the story is good, and that is all.

Controls: 5 (Great)
They’re pretty easy to remember, and not confusing at all! You can use B for a sword attack and Left, Down, and Right C buttons to use tools/weapons that you select. The Up C button allows you to talk to Navi after she calls for your attention. She will give helpful advice at times (other times it's pointless). The A button does an action based on the Action Icon. For instance, if you stood right next to a door, the Action Icon would say “Open”. By pressing A you would perform the displayed action, so in this case you would open the door by pressing A. The Action Icon can also allow you to check stuff, grab onto blocks, let go of ladders/walls, and other things. This game makes great use of the Z button, for it allows you to target items, people, or enemies. If there is nothing to target, then it simply allows you to look ahead of yourself. This makes for great camera control that cannot be argued with.

Graphics: 4 (Good)
It’s is good for its age, and I would give it a 5 if it was 1998. It would be a concern now for its low frame rate (about 26-30 FPS) and its polygonal characters. Yet it is easily adaptable and becomes less of an issue later in the game. It may still be an issue for more serious gamers of another series, so that is why it is lowered a point.

Music/Sounds: 5 (Great)
Amazing quality! The music is of highest quality and is actually memerable! Oddly enough, this game is placed in Hyrule but lacks the original Zelda theme. It doesn’t matter so much, because the new music is much more enjoyable than something that we’ve already heard. Not only that, but the sounds match equally with the music. Everything from explosions to sword collisions to Cuccos clucking, they are all matched!

Difficulty: 4 (Harder than normal)
I found myself stuck in many points at the Sage temples (especially the Water Temple). It always brings up more of a challenge versus the obvious being seen. The bosses, however, are not all brutally hard. I thought that the hardest were Morphia and Ganondorf. Volvagia wasn’t hard, just painful, as with many of the bosses. Still, it was a challenge to solve the dungeons, so I’ll give it a 4.

Characters: 5 (Great)
Lots of important people, enemies, and those innocent bystanders, too. And I could actually remember all of them! No doubt that you can, too! The list can take up a majority of this Review, so I’ll mention just the role players. There is Zelda, Link, Ganondorf, Saria, Mido, Great Deku Tree, Darunia, Darunia’s son, Princess Ruto, King Zora, Nabooru, Dampe, and probably many more. What a list for main characters!

Replayability: 4 (Likely chance)
The game has a perfect length: not too long, but not too short. It may have you coming back to try some challenges that you may not have done before, like trying to get all 100 Skulltula tokens or getting the Biggoron's sword. However, the game will be easier than before, since you know how to get through everything. It will have you coming back when you're bored.

Fun Factor!: 5 (Very Fun)
This game has a path that you’ll have to follow eventually, but if you don’t feel like doing it right then, don’t worry. There are many things you can do, such as fishing in the Fisher’s pond, becoming a mask tradesman and trading masks, playing minigames in Hyrule Castle Town (Kakariko Village in the future), and other fun stuff! Basically, there is always something you can do. Plus there are some secrets to be found…

Comments:
- I would say that this game might scare younger players, about the ages of 9 and below. It is mostly the battle music and the way enemies attack. Eventually you’ll get over it, so I’m just letting you know that.

Overall: 37/40 points
Grade: A

What more do I have to say? It’s a great game that you’ll love. I would say to Zelda fans (if you haven’t already bought it)- “BUY IT!!!” Even Mario fans should try this out! You may find some familiar characters in there… *coughranchcough* *coughTaloncough*. If you are a serious fan of any series other than Zelda you should still play this game! It will keep you entertained for the entire time you play it!
