Graphics: 8
Are the graphics
realistic? No, of course not. The graphics in this game are paper thin.
The reason for the high score is because it's very unique and no other
game seems to use this style of graphics. Not only are the characters like
paper, but the buildings, items, etc. are paper, too. Oh well, if you don't
like "paper" graphics, then that's tough. I'm not a BIG graphics fan anyway.
Controls: 6
Ok, here's the
deal. While on the playing field just exploring, they're ok. I mean, you
move with the control stick, B is the hammer, jump with A, and spin slide
with Z. Now when you get in battles that's a different story. When you
use your hammer attack, you have to hold control left and then stop at
the right time. When you get the action command, you have to jump and press
A at the right timing. It's VERY annoying having to keep up with the action
command. You'll see what I'm talking about.
Gameplay: 9
Just like any
RPG, really. You each take turns in battle to hurt each other. My FAVORITE
type of gameplay. You must save seven Star Spirits with seven bosses guarding
them. VERY similar to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. There
is also a lady who will let you bring recipes in and she will cook them
for you. Nice! Plus you get party members too, a LOT of them. The only
difference here is in SMRPG you were allowed to use three at a time, in
this game you can only use one at a time. Plus you will collect several
items and badges to help you in battle. Oh it's so FUN!!!
Difficulty: 4
(The lower the number, the easier the game)
This disappointed
me. The game was FAR too easy for me. Ok, first of all, in Toad Town, you
meet this fortune teller who, if you pay a small amount of coins, will
help you in your quest. Believe me, he actually does tell you exactly what
to do. Second of all, the boss battles. The first boss is really easy (It's
five advanced Koopa Troopas). Tubba Blubba, the third boss, is WAY TOO
EASY. Even Bowser, the last boss, is very easy for that point of the game.
You can defeat him in about 10 turns or maybe even less. The hardest boss
in the game is the Crystal King, who is very difficult. Actually, the hardest
boss I beat was Kent. C. Koopa, who is not even required.
Story: 7
The story was
decent. Bowser steals a magical Star Rod and kidnaps the princess Peach,
bla bla bla. The only interesting thing is he stole a Star Rod, which is
a somewhat new item to Mario games. Oh, and in between chapters you get
to play as Peach around her castle. Ok story, I guess.
Music: 8
Even though there
are many people that don't like the music in this game, I love it. I like
almost all of the boss themes. The first boss theme is from the Super Mario
Brothers 3 Hammer Brothers theme. I like Tubba Blubba's theme; it's catchy.
Huff 'N Puff's is great too. I LOVE the final boss with Bowser's music.
LOVE IT!!! Anyway, it's just game music.
Thing That Made
Me Mad: 0, in fact -1
What made me
mad? The fact that the Koopalings weren't in the game. There are exactly
SEVEN of just about any major thing in this game. Plus the world in this
game is extremely similar to the lands in Super Mario Brothers 3, except
for there not being a pipe maze. Why didn't Nintendo put them in this game?!
Ahh!!!
Overall: 9
I loved this
game. In fact, it is my favorite Mario game on N64. If you haven't bought
it, you can still buy it used. Just hope your N64 is still working. Even
if you've already played the second one, I would STILL buy it. The ONLY
flaw is it's too easy. TAKE MY ADVICE, PLEASE!
