Console: GameCube
Rating: E
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Release Date: August 26, 2002 (North America)

For those who don't know me, I rate on a 1-10 scale. This is the very FIRST game I ever bought on GameCube. In my opinion, it was a success.

Story: 8
This story is ACTUALLY original for onc.e.. Mario, Peach, and a lot of Toads including Toadsworth set out for a well-deserved vacation. When they arrive, they notice graffiti all over the place. Then they see what is known as Shadow Mario ,who is causing this. He paints a red "M" wherever he goes (sort of like the McDonald's M). Now the town has falsely accused MArio of doing this. He cannot leave the island until he cleans up the place, and he must collect all the Shine Sprites to restore sunlight to the island. When he goes out to do this, Shadow Mario steals Peach. Oh no, what is Mario to do?

Controls: 6
The controls are almost identical to SM64. You can jump with A, double-jump with A-A, side jump by moving over to the opposite side for a second and then switching back to the other side and jumping. Jump then press B to slide. Then you have your differences. With FLUDD, you can switch from hover mode to spray mode. Then there are two other upgrades later on in the game. If you ask me, I think the controls can be very confusing. There are also often times where you will jump THINKING you are in hover mode, but actually in spray also. Yeah, I wasn't impressed with the controls.

Gameplay: 8
This is also very similar to SM64. You must collect 120 Shine Sprites (similar to Stars in SM64), only in this game there are only seven worlds to go through. You have collect the eight red coins, and you have the 100-coin Shine in each level too. In this game every ten blue coins you collect is worth a Shine Sprite, and you have a SECRET Shine Sprite in every level. Plus every episode 7 in every level, you get to chase down Shadow Mario and spray him to defeat him. So there are differences, and yes I like the gameplay, but it is so similar to SM64. The only difference is FLUDD.

Characters: 9
There are only two playable characters: Mario and FLUDD. But I'm talking about the people. For once they're not Toads or Koopa Troopas or Goombas. No, now they're Piantas! I like this because it added something new to the Mario World. You will find that some of them are a bit strange, yes indeed. Plus the bosses are different also. And of course Shadow Mario is a new character. I was impressed with Nintendo adding all these new chracters to the game and very happy I didn't see another Goomba, Koopa Troopa, etc. The main toad is Toadsworth, who is not mentioned in any past game.

Difficulty: 8
I have two ways of judging the difficulty of this game. If you are just simply wanting to conquer the game without 100% completion, then this is one easy game. Now if you are planning on collecting every Shine Sprite in the game, this is proven to be very difficult, especially when trying to get all the blue coins in the level called Noki Bay. Then you will probably have a hard time in Pianta Village trying to get 100 coins, and some of those episodes are extremely tough. Now the bosses are pretty easy, really. I thought the hardest boss was the Manta Ray at Hotel Delfino. Yeah, so if you want to get 100% completion in this game, it will be harder, and yes, harder then SM64.

Replayability:
9 As I said above, you'll probably want to get 100% completion. Now in order to just beat the game without 100% completion, you just need to beat the seventh episode in every level, then make it through the last world, called "Corona Mountain", and beat Bowser. That's very easy in my opinion. Getting the blue coins will be a major pain. Also you'll have to race someone in a couple of levels. Similar to Koopa the Quick, his name is "II Piantissimo. While trying to pronounce his name, he is just a tad-bit tougher then KTQ. Yeah, but not much. Anyway, looks like you've heard everything about this section above.

Music: 8.5
The music, oh, the music is lovely. It has a nice tropical style for a change. I'm so sick of hearing the underground theme and the SMB theme, for once it's different. The music for Isle Delfino is nice and relaxing as you explore. Then the level music is ok too. I like Noki Bay's level music as it puts you to sleep almost. Then Petey Piranha's boss music is energizing and makes you wanna just KILL that plant dead. Yes, Nintendo did a gret job with the music.

Overall: 8
I would buy this game if I didn't have it already. Even if you've beat SM64, there are still many things different about the game. I would buy it for a maximum of $40. Yep, that sounds good. Nintendo did a great job of creating a very fun MArio game that is very similar to SM64, yet has many differences also. Good job, Nintendo!
