Super Smash Brothers was the first fighting game with all of the Nintendo characters together. For this Review, 1-10 scale as usual, and I'm eliminating the story section (since there's no story), but creating a HUGE character section and stage section (similar to MK64).
Controls: 6
It's hard to
have good controls in a fighting game. What's weird is control stick up
is jump, A is hit, B is your special attack. Think like a fighting game.
You also get to taunt in this game.
Gameplay: 8
This is where
the originality comes into play. You basically have to try to knock out
your opponent(s) as many times as possible. Now this is depending on the
mode, too. In Time Mode, the rules are to knock out your opponent as many
times as you can before time runs out. If it's a tie, then it's Sudden
Death. Also when you hit your opponent, their damage increases; the higher
the damage, the more chance they will fall off. Damage goes up to 999%.
In Stock Mode, there is no time limit. If you're opponent has four stock
and you have four stock, you must knock them out. Stock goes up to 99.
Yes, if you want, you can have 99 stock and they can only have 1. That's
how this game is; you can have it YOUR way.) There is also a 1-player mode
to play, practice mode, and two cool modes to play just for fun: Break
the Targets and Board the Platforms. In 1-player mode and the two FUN event
games, you'll unlock four characters that I'm NOT going to mention. You
also have a biogrophy section on all of your characters and a training
mode that gets you started. There is hardly anything wrong with the gameplay,
although I think 1-player mode COULD ghave been extended.
Difficulty: 7
This game is
hard to judge the difficulty of. If you are playing just to unlock the
four characters and stage, this should be fairly easy. Now if you want
to try, just for the fun of it, let's say beating 1-player mode with 1
stock on Very Hard without continuing, this is just way, way, way too hard.
Depending on which modes you play on different difficulties, this game
can vary. I'd say the hardest situation you can put yourself into is 1
player mode, 1 stock, and Very Hard. Yeah, try it, you'll see what I'm
talking about... Near impossibility.
Music: 7
The music in
this game is actually pretty cool. You get, of course, the Mario theme
remixed again, Star Fox music, the Pokemon theme, the original DK theme,
The Legend of Zelda theme remixed, you get a variety. Plus I like the Master
Hand theme too. (Master Hand's the final boss in 1-player mode.) I was
impressed with the music, and it makes you enjoy the game better as you
fight during the stages. The only reason I deducted points is because the
stage music is the ONLY good part. The menu music isn't.
Secrets: 5
This is the disapppointing
part of the game. You unlock only four characters and ONE stage! Not only
that, they're EASY to unlock. I'm not going to tell you HOW to unlock them,
but believe me, it doesn't take much effort. Maybe have eight characters
and 6 stages to unlock, and actually MAKE you put in some kind of effort.
Or maybe you could unlock cool old school tunes in the sound test, which
IS unlockable. I forgot to mention this one.
Items: 7
They were good.
My favorite item is the classic Donkey Kong hammer, which is almost an
automatic KO (the music also changes when in progress with this item.)
I love Pokeballs, which contain several Pokemon that really help you. You
get Ray Guns, Star Rods, and Heart Containers which is a HUGE help. Then
there's the Maximum Tomato, which is helpful but only eases your percentage
by 100. There are some cool items. I was also impressed. There could have
been more, though.
Characters: LISTED BELOW (Will grade on 1-8, eight being the best out of the original eight, and 1 being the worst out of the original eight.)
Mario - (7) -
If you don't know him, you shouldn't be playing Nintendo. His first game
ever was Donkey Kong NES. He's my second favorite because he's all around
good, and can be quite powerful.
Donkey Kong -
(8) - DK's debut was also in Donkey Kong for NES. He's my favorrite (actually
my favorite in the game is a secret character) out of the eight because
of his SWING attack, which is very powersul. He himself is powerful, and
he's also very fast. Plus his B-Up recovery is great because he almost
always gets on the stage.
Link - (6) -
Link's debut was in The Legend of Zelda on NES. Link is my third favorite
because of his B-Up recovery, he's decently fast, and he uses a lot of
projectile items such as bombs, hookshot, etc. Yes, his sword can be wicked!
Samus Aran -
(3) - Samus debuted in Metroid for the NES. Samus, in my opinion, is not
a good character because she's not very fast, not very powerful, her B-Up
recovery's all right, and her stage stinks.
Yoshi - (4) -
Yoshi debuted in Super Mario World for SNES. He's a decent character, fairly
strong, fast, but what makes him such a bad character is he has NO B-Up
recovery, which ruins almost everything about him.
Kirby - (5) -
Debuted in Kirby's Dreamland. I love Kirby because of his AMAZING B-Up
recovery. He's quick and hard to hit, but lacks on strength though. The
only reason I deducted points was because of his ability to be killed so
easily.
Fox McCloud -
(2)- Debuted in Star Fox on SNES. Fox is a terrible character from the
beginning. He's very fast, which is good, but he can very easily be knocked
out, his B-Up recovery is very confusing, I don't like his level that much,
and I never played his games.
Pikachu - (1)
- Debuted in Pokemon Red and Blue. There are so many bad things about him:
easy to be killed- VERY VERY easy, B-Up is awfully hard to do without being
killed, and he isn't the least bit powerful. Even his only powerful B-Down
attack is hard to use because it comes from the sky; think of platforms.
Pikachu isn't my worst in the entire game, but is very bad.
Stages: DOWN BELOW
(I'll do the same thing as above)
Peach's Castle
- (5) - This stage is actually not a bad stage, just too boring and plain
though. This is the stage you should play if you're a beginner.
Kongo Jungle
- (8) - This is my favorite out of the original eight (once again the secret
is actually my favorite in the game). It's a decent arena with decent music,
but the best part of all is the barrel at the bottom. If you're falling,
this can save your life.
Hyrule Castle
- (7) - I love this stage too. It's very long, which is good, and I like
the section towards the right of the stage. This is a good place to hideout
to run out of time.
Planet Zebes
(1) - Wow, this stage is terrible. You hardly even get a stage, but the
worst part of all that deducts every one of the points is the fact that
lava comes up and damages you at times. This causes gameplay to stop, and
avoiding the lava is very annoying at times.
Yoshi's Island
- (2) - This stage gets a bad score for one reason: too boring. You get
clouds offstage to stand on for awhile, but they eventually fade away.
This is really the only thing unique about this one.
Dreamland - (6)
- This stage is cool. It's small, which means lots of KO's, which means
more fun. Plus Whispey Woods tries to blow you off the stage. This is one
of my favorite stages.
Sector Z - (4)
- This really isn't that great. You have Arwings trying to kill you while
you're trying to avoid being killed, which is so unfair. Plus at the right
you can hide out at this section where CPUs hardly goe, which is very cheap.
Saffron City
- (3) - This stage is hard to play on. It offers a hard layout to fight
on with dips, uneven land, and buildings. Plus the Pokemon try to kill
you too, which is very hard. I always try to avoid playing here, but it's
STILL better then Planet Zebes.
Overall: 7
Here's what I
recommend. If you already have SSBM, but don't have this, then don't buy
it at all because everything in this game is already in SSBM (with the
exception of Board the Platforms). If you don't have any of the SSBs, then
buy this one first because you'll need to get a feel of the game. I'd suggest
it for $25.
