Dr. Mario 64 Review

Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Release Date: April 9, 2001
System: N64

I played this game without even playing the original Dr. Mario on NES. I nbjoyed it anyway. I'm rating, of course, on a 1-10 scale.

Controls: 10
I don't give a bunch of 10s, but this game deserves one in this category. It's very simple: use the control pad and A. You can also use B to move the blocks counterclockwise, but I really am so fast I don't need to do that. That's it. Come on, it's a puzzle game, I HOPE they didn't make the controls too hard.

Graphics: 4
Of course you can expect a low rating for a puzzle game. You're basically looking at Yellow, Red, and Blue Biruses and a bunch of square blocks. Believe me , it looks NO better then SNES graphics. It's not very good, but remember, it's just a puzzle game. I just think Nintendo could have at least made the Viruses a little more realistic looking.

Characters: 2
The only recognizable characters are Dr. Mario (Mario basically) and Wario. Then you get Spearhead, Webber, Silky, Rudy, Mad Scienstein, Applby, Jellybob, Octo, Helio, and Hammerbot. Now I LOVE different characters in games, but when you don't even recognize the characters it's a problem. Here's another problem: there is NO difference when choosing these characters. Whether you pick Dr. Mario or SIlky, they will have the same effect as each other and will not hurt you nor make you better during play. There are also two secret characters, but there is no sense in even unlocking them because they're no difference in gameplay. The 2 come from Dr. Mario and Wario.

Gameplay: 8
Just like the NES version. You have a number of viruses that you can set, and you must clear them out according to their color with the megavitamins, which come in one or two colors each. Three of the same color on one Virus clears of that color clears it, and TWO on a double Virus clears those. If you're playing against someone, you have to clear the board before the other person. You lose if your megavitamins pile up all the way to the top. This is classic mode. Then you have Story mode. Dr. Mario or Wario mustM track down the stolen Megavitamins. You can set this to easy, normal, or hard. This is how you unlock the secret characters (like it's worth it anyway). Then you have your Marathon Mode, which is an endless game that grows to be very boring. This is a useless mode. Then you have the unique Flash Mode. This mode is one of the coolest. You have normal and flashing Viruses, and must only kill the flashing ones. This mode can be VERY addicting. I played this mode all the time and you get very hooked on it. You also have a multiplayer mode that includes up to four players, and Score Attack, where you only have three minutes to clear as many Viruses as you can and try to achieve a high score. I was very impressed with the modes and the gameplay. This is a great part of the game.

Difficulty: Depends
You get to set your difficulty, really. Well if you play a vs mode against a computer on easy and you have four Viruses and he has 99, well then this would be under ludacrously easy. Make it vice versa, and it'd be impossible. Now if you're looking to beat Story Mode on hard, it will be harder than hard, really. It all depends on whatever you set the settings to be. If you're strickly talking about Story Mode, then I give it a 7.

Music: 8
Wow! I was impressed with this too. You have the Fever and Chill themes, which are awesome songs. You have a VERY excellent song at the very end of story mode which you will hear. I love the music in this game, especially the classic Fever. In fact, I don't think I hate a single song in this game at all. I'm glad to know that Nintendo made a N64 game with great music (Mario Kart 64- yuck.)

Secrets: 1
Well what did you expect? I pretty much explained this earlier. You get two lousy characters that don't even do anything really. They don't help you at all. In fact, they make your life worse because you struggle and use curse words throughout story mode trying to unlock them to find out they're useless. I've said enough.

Replayability: 9
Finally a high score. This is possibly the best part of the gaem. Think PUZZLE games. It's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get, which means you never know what's going to happen. It's a different match every time. You'll find yourself playing consecutive hours each day; day after day after day. You'll love it, though. Then when you finally get burnt out on the game itself, you won't play it for about a year. Then you'll start right back up. The only reason I deducted a point is because of the lack of unlockables in particular. Other then that, YAY! I still play this game every now and then.

Overall: 8
This is a great puzzle game. I loved it and I would pay $30 for it again. Despite it's flaws, if you haven't, buy it. I'm telling you, you WON'T regret it. Believe me, it's not common that I give a puzzle game an 8. There are only two other puzzle games I like better.
