Final Fantasy IV Advance Review

Square-Enix decided to let a newer generation have a chance to appreciate the classic RPGs that made their Final Fantasy series popular. Final Fantasy IV is the second classic to grace Nintendo's infamous handheld. If you don't recognize it, that's because they released it as Final Fantasy II for the Super Nintendo in the USA to avoid confusion. It's a long story, but I guess it didn't work too well, did it, Squaresoft?

As Cecil, the resentful dark knight, you journey across the pixelated landscape to do what else? Save the world. You'll be able to play as at least 12 characters. Each of those characters comes with special abilities. Rydia can summon monsters to do her bidding. Kain can jump high in the air and do massive damage. Edward, well... he's a bard. That means he plays music with his harp that bores monsters to sleep or insanity as they begin attacking each other. The gameplay is fast, furious, and, at times, pleasantly difficult. Having five characters in your party, you'll rarely find a time with nothing to do during battle. If you know what you're doing, you can use those otherwise useless magic spells to your advantage.

The disappointing thing from the last version of Final Fantasy IV was the brief storyline. This has changed with a series of new dungeons and the ability to change your party members near the end of the game. Another fix was the embarrassingly bad script (Do the Meteo, Now!). There is, however, this weird glitch where your character can do another move before they have to wait. But that's okay, I like to consider it an extra move. The graphics have improved to a point: although the backgrounds and sprites are more detailed, some of the game, like character sprites, still looks like it came from Microsoft Paint.

But while some "gamers" don't agree with me, graphics are NOT everything. The game is a vast improvement from its early '90s beginnings. Final Fantasy IV Advance gets a 5 out of 5.
