Yoshi's Island DS Review

By Keroh Toad

Platform: DS
Rating: E
Genre: Platformer
Cost: Around $25-$30
Graphics: 2D

Story: Kamek wants to steal the babies again. But this time he tries to capture more familiar characters, including Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, and Baby DK. And again he only succeeds in capturing Baby Luigi. So the Yoshis help Baby Mario again in a quest to save the babies. Mostly the same material, but with a few more babies.

Characters and their abilities: All the Yoshis shoot out their tongues. Baby Mario helps Yoshi run faster. Baby Peach uses her parasol to help Yoshi flutter higher when there is a gust of wind. Baby DK can climb and move around on vines. Baby Wario uses a magnet for certain blocks and to attracts coins. Baby Bowser shoots fire (but Yoshi can't make eggs while Baby Bowser is on his back).

Controls: There are two modes.

Mode 1
D-Pad: Move, open doors, crouch/cancel egg use
B: Jump/Flutter
A: Use egg
X: Lock target, hold and press up or down to move the view
Y: Use tongue
L: Same as X
R: Same as A

Mode 2
A: Jump/Flutter
B: Use tongue
R: Use egg
L: Lock target, hold and press up or down to move the view

Touch Screen and Select are not used in both modes.

Now time for ratings. I'll rate stuff from 1-10 .

Story: 7/10
Didn't really change from the last game's story.

Graphics: 9/10
Pretty good for a 2D game.

Gameplay: 7/10
Kinda what you get used to with most platformer games. Run, jump, crouch, but with the addition of using the eggs and Yoshi's tongue (or Baby Bowser's fire).

Bosses: 9/10
Pretty Fun. On all of them but one you need eggs to beat them. My two favorite bosses were Hector the Reflector and the last boss.

Sound/Music: 9/10
The sounds are repeated throughout the whole game. But the only one that was REALLY annoying was the one when you die. There was a lot of music and it fit right into the level you're playing, and was really good too. The songs get stuck in your head but that's kind of a good thing.

Overall: 8/10
The game is fun, colorful, and nice to listen to. But it's mostly the same material just with better graphics. The Yoshi transformations (touching a bubble  with an icon in it) were the same from the last game, and like the last game  they were hard to control. This game was a lot easier than the last one though. You could easily get 200 lives, and in the first one I'd be lucky to have 50. Overall, I'd rate the whole game 8/10.

The game is easy, but not as easy as New Super Mario Bros. was. Now that you're finished reading this, you can go back to thinking about how awesome Super Smash Bros. Brawl is gonna be ^_^
