Sonic and the Secret Rings Review

By Tail Koopa

I think this is the first game from the Sonic series that was released for the Wii. The scores are ranked from one to five stars. Five stars means awesome, and one star means bad.

Story: *
A genie named Shahra appears to Sonic, and shows him the book that makes up the world of the Arabian Nights. Pages are blank, meaning that the world of the Arabian Nights is being corrupted, because of an evil genie named Erazor. If this goes on, then Erazor can leave the book and destroy the real world. And so Sonic, along with Shahra, dives into the book and must stop Erazor.

Can we even half-agree that this is something other than a childish, stupid, non-decent storyline? Especially since the evilness and havoc is in a book rather than the real world. Just hearing people complaining about the text of the Arabian Nights being defiled by Erazor sickens me.

Controls: ****
The controls are simple. Tilt the Wii Remote left or right to move left or right, use the 2 button to jump, hold the 1 button to brake, and move the Wii Remote quickly to do a Jump Dash/Homing Attack. I believe no moves require doing two things simultaneously. The only drawback is the controls during grinding. I think it’s difficult passing from one grind to the other.

Gameplay: *****
Excluding the story, the game itself is awesome. I think you’d find this game enjoyable and get hooked soon if you play it. There are lots of high-speed actions while watching out for your surroundings. You can run at high speed without constantly being stopped by obstacles. There are more different skills you can use as you level up. There are a few other fun sequences too, such as log riding, surfing, and flying. Enemies take no more than a few hits to defeat them.

Adventure Mode: *****
This is the core of the game. You proceed through the story and complete missions in this mode. Like many other Sonic games, you can do the same missions you have completed over and over again as long as you wish, and choose any stage you have unlocked, meaning you can play in any stage you have unlocked and do any mission you have completed if you want. And if you want to start a new game, you can select a different game data file.

Party Mode: **
Seems that Sonic Team is making a reference to the Mario Parties. There are minigames to play and different modes, such as a tournament, a minigame journey, and more. I don’t think the minigames are that fun though, and I don’t think the mode is all that great.

Special Book Mode: ***
If you want to see some “behind the scenes” of Sonic and the Secret Rings, this mode gives you the opportunity. There is information on games from the Sonic series released before this game, developments, illustrations, segments of the story during the game, music you wish to hear, ranks and trophies, and more. You can see things in the game Sonic Team had worked on. The only major problem is that most of the things in the Special Book require you to earn gold medals in missions, which is difficult.

Stages/Worlds: ****
The worlds are fun to play in. Each world is very different and has different characteristics and its own kind of obstacles from the others. You’ll start out in the Lost Prologue, a learning world where you learn to do moves. But then you’ll move on to a beautiful sand oasis, a wild prehistoric jungle, an ancient fire palace, a wondrous sky ruins, a pirate world, a dome filled with skeletons, and finally a twisted palace in the night sky. The only problem that lowers the score by a star is that there are only eight worlds. It’s not a lot compared to the number of stages in other Sonic games.

Missions: ***
There are many missions to complete in this game, such as get to the goal, collect a certain number of rings, defeat a certain number of enemies, avoid getting defeated, don’t take damage, don’t collect any pearls, get to the end before time runs out, beat someone in a race of speed, and some unique challenges in some stages. There are a number of missions for each world. However, missions in stages share the same objective, and there aren’t enough unique missions.

Graphics: ****
Almost everything looks good, though the game doesn't look realistic. The environments of the worlds are well done and look great, except for the first world, the Lost Prologue, which looks dull. The main characters look great. The enemies don’t look dull. Most of the enemies/spirits look basically the same throughout the worlds, yet they look different in each world to match the atmosphere. The other enemies look cool too, like some big golem spirits and the dinosaurs.

Music: *****
The music is great. Most of it fits well. I think all of the worlds’ music fits for the separate worlds, well, except one. I don’t think the music for Sand Oasis fits for that world, but that’s pretty minor compared to everything else. The boss’ music is great and fits the bosses.

Fun Factor!: ****
As I say, you will most likely get hooked on this game if you play, perhaps not in the first world, but after that, yes. The worlds are fun to play in and explode, and you will have a fun time doing missions, though some missions may drive you into frustration when you constantly fail.

Replayability: ***
There are many missions to unlock and complete. Earning gold medals takes a long time, not to mention unlocking more stuff in the Special Book. That’s a lot of completing and unlocking stuff to do. But other than that, the fun ceases after beating the story.

Overall: ***1/2
Since the score is very close to 3.5, I considered giving a 4. Instead I gave it three stars and a half. Either way, I recommend buying this game. This is one of the satisfying, good games out of the other newer 3D Sonic games.
