New Super Mario Bros. Review

By Woshi

Okay. This is one of the most impressive Mario games I’ve ever seen. New Super Mario Bros is a unique 2D platformer for Nintendo DS. This will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10.

Story: 5

Pretty good, though I think it could’ve used a little more dialogue… Mario and Peach are walking, the castle catches fire, Mario runs to the scene, Bowser Jr. grabs Peach. Mario chases Junior, and blah blah blah. Hmm… I still wonder if whoever set the castle on fire was Lakithunder…

Graphics: 10 10 10!!!

AWESOME GRAPHICS!!! It’s like… like… 3D characters in a 2D world. Very creative!

Characters: 4

Well, there is, of course, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser. Toadsworth appears in the Toad Houses. Sadly, the Koopalings aren’t in this one. :( Too bad though. They would’ve fit perfectly. Bowser Jr’s in it, but I don’t like Junior that much! I like only two of the bosses in this game, Bowser and Petey, but what’s up with all those other bosses? I mean, COME ON!!! MUMMIPOKEY?! CHEEPSKIPPER?! WHO NEEDS THOSE LOSERS?! KOOPALINGS ROCK, MAN!!!

Music: 8

Most of it is pretty good. I really like the overworld theme, and there’s that classic cave theme from Mario 1. The Toad House theme is pure classic, just sped up a bit. I don’t really like the tower and castle themes. They both get annoying, which is why I took off two points. The boss music is really catchy, like a mixed version of the Mario 3 Boss music.

Terrain: 10

Not bad at all. Some of the worlds look like worlds from Super Mario Bros 3. World 1 looks like Grass Land. World 2 looks like Desert Hill. World 7 could be Sky Land… Anyway, really nice terrain.

Power-Ups: 8

Apart from the old power-ups, like Super Mushrooms and Fire Flowers, the newer power-ups are wicked sweet! I especially love the Mega Mushroom, stomping around in a huge size, and squashing every enemy in sight! I LOVE IT!!! WHOO!!! But the Mini Mushroom and Blue Koopa Shell are pretty cool, too. I do, however, wish there was a power-up that makes you fly, like a Raccoon Leaf or a Cape Feather… Then again… I think the Wing Cap from Mario 64 would’ve been cool in this game…

Gameplay: 10

Like I said before, this game is a 2D platformer, very much like Mario 3. There are several levels in eight worlds, the worlds have Toad Houses, and there are tower levels where Bowser Jr. plays a role similar to Boom Boom. There are no airships though, which doesn’t bother me! I HATE airships!

Control: 9

Mario and Luigi are really easy to control. I’ve never had any trouble… well except when I’m Shell Mario. Sometimes I get too “slide-happy” and slide into a hole! Stinks!

Overall: 10

A BRILLIANT GAME!!! That’s all I can say.

Recommendation:

For all tourists who don’t have this game, you have no idea what you’re missing. If you ever find this game, I ORDER YOU TO GET IT!!! SO GET IT FOR CRYIN’ OUT LOUD, AND HAVE YOURSELVES A GOOD OL’ TIME!!!

Note: If you want to know how to play as Luigi, then you’re lucky I’m nice enough to tell you now… Hold down L + R while choosing a file.
