Yoshi’s Story is for the Nintendo 64. It is rated E.
Gameplay: It is pretty easy to play, but there are some hard obstacles. To advance or beat a level, you must eat 30 fruit. Fruits are sometimes in bubbles, floating, or just laying there. Fruit isn’t that hard to find. If you get all of the coins and melons, you earn extra points. If you eat 7 of the same fruit in a row, a heart with a parashoot falls down, and if you eat it, Yoshi gets super happy, meaning you become invincible (except for lava and falling off the bottom of screen), have a longer tongue, ground pounds turn Shy Guys into lucky fruits and pops bubbles, and Yoshi has an unlimited supply of eggs.
This is different than Yoshi’s Island because Yoshi does not transform, doesn’t have Baby Mario on his back, has to eat fruit, some enemies are new, and some from Yoshi’s Island are not brought into Yoshi’s Story.
You can ride balls,
sniff for hidden coins or fruit, fight giant Piranha Plants, ride dragons,
step on jelly, and more! There are also games in levels. These are
the three:
· Delivery!
- Deliver the boxes of melons to the goal. Drop all and lose the mini game.
· Speed
Test - Run as fast as you can to the goal. If the Chomp at the top eats
all the melons, you lose.
· Flutter
Jump - Jump as far as you can. If you land, you get melons depending on
how far you jumped. You must start by jumping over the flag, or you lose.
Graphics: 10/10
The graphics
are really good, with effects such as fireworks, lava bubbles, shadowing,
and a 3D look.
Music: 6/10
The music was
good, except that each song had the same rhythm (or melody, I’m not sure).
Difficulty: 4/10
Some levels are
difficult, but most are easy and you learn quickly. The controls are pretty
basic, also.
Yoshis: 7/10
I like that you
don’t have an assigned color Yoshi for a course. I also like that each
color Yoshi has its own favorite fruit. There are also well hidden black
and white Yoshis that are special. There aren’t too many colors, though,
but I’ve heard rumors that if you collect every coin in the game, you get
a purple Yoshi, as well as a rumor of a gold Yoshi.
Multiplayer: 1/10
I know this was
kind of dumb to put here, but I heard another rumor quite a few years ago
that there is a multiplayer mode. I haven’t seen it so I’m saying that
there’s no multiplayer.
Creativity: 8/10
The backgrounds
are nice, there are new ideas in obstacles, a life bar (a flower), and
floor and ceiling styles. The only downfall is the music for not having
a different rhythm or melody. I like that you have to eat 30 fruit to beat
the level.
Enemies: 8/10
There are lots
of new enemies, such as lava ghosts, Teehee Butterfly (who is weird), Pogo
Guys, Mini Fly Guys, an octopus, spiked things (not Tap-Tap), and more!
Some enemies are missing, though.
Length: 4/10
The game is really
short, but not if you try to unlock all of the levels. If you unlocked
all the levels and did story mode, then there is a time trial mode.
Overall: 9/10
Overall, I think
Yoshi’s Story is a great game for all ages. There are a couple of downfalls
that don’t really affect game play except for its short length. I think
this is a good game to buy, but now that game stores don’t sell Nintendo
64 games, it’s not going to be easy to find in stores. You can download
it for the Wii's Virtual Console.
