Yoshi’s Safari Review

By Ryan “Blaze” Koopa

Yoshi’s Safari is one game that really impresses me. It’s the only shooting game in the Mario series. The game will be ranked on a scale of one to 10.

Story: 8

The story is okay. Peach tells you about a place called Jewelry Land and that Bowser and the Koopalings have taken it over, split the land in two, and kidnapped King Fret and Prince Pine. At least this is one game where Bowser doesn’t kidnap Peach (thank goodness).

Characters: 9

You can’t really argue with the characters in the game. There’s Mario, Yoshi, Peach (who only appears in the story), and Bowser. The Koopalings are also in it (Yahoo!). There are also a couple of new characters: King Fret and Prince Pine. Big Boo appears as the boss of Ghost Mansion, and then there’s a Magikoopa boss in Cornice Cave, who, I believe, could possibly be Kamek. I had to take off a point because Luigi and Toad were left out.

Graphics: 10

The graphics in this game are amazing, despite it being a SNES game. They made a great effort at making a 3D game. This is one of the only SNES games where Bowser actually looks decent… except he has orange hair. Anyway, all the enemies look good. The Koopalings look really good! One thing I noticed was that the Bloopers in this game are yellow. That’s not big though…

Music and Sound: 10

The music lacks a little, but it fits in very well. The Bowser Battle music is my favorite, and I also like the Dark Sea and Boss music. As for the sound effects, they’re pretty good.

Levels: 8

The levels are repetitive, but still okay. In fact, I think I’ll walkthrough and share my opinion of each level. Note: I gave a few of the levels some names of my own just to make them sound better. If they don’t sound better to you, then I don’t care!

Level 1: The Grasslands
The first level of a game is always an easy one. The terrain is just a flat, grassy plain (duh). Enemies include Paragoombas, Paratroopas, Bullet Bills, and a Hammer Brother. The boss is Lemmy in a humanoid robot that looks like the Koopa Klown Kopter. He’s also easy. Just blast the center cannon (the head) off, then blast Lemmy whenever he sticks his head up until his mech blows up. Looks like Lemmy Koopa’s blasting off again!

Level 2: Mushroom Plains
Too easy! This level doesn’t even have a mini-boss! The terrain is brown dirt with huge Mushrooms in the distance. Enemies are Paratroopas, Paragoombas, Podoboos, and sliding Koopa shells. Ludwig is the boss. He pilots a huge robot Koopa Troopa. He’s just as easy as the rest of the level. Just blast the pink thing on the shell, then blast the center cannon whenever Ludwig opens it until it blows up. Piece of soup, right?

Level 3: Pipe Island
Another easy level. The terrain is like a desert, with huge pipes in the distance. Enemies are Paragoombas, Paratroopas, Monty Moles, Nipper Plants, and a Boomerang Brother. Wendy is the boss. She’s kinda hard. She sticks her head out of pipes and throws bombs while a flying anvil throws (spits?) horseshoes at you. Since Wendy has an in destructible shield, you have to shoot the anvil whenever it’s above her head. It will fall on her. Doing this three times will beat her. Wherever Wendy appears is totally random, so you may need to use the clock just in case…

Level 4: Crescent Coast
This level has two parts: the beach, and underwater, so it’s a long level, but it’s still pretty easy. You can get a Starman in this level too! Enemies above water are Nipper Plants, Paragoombas, and Paratroopas. Enemies underwater are Cheep Cheep, Bloopers, and a strange jar-like creature that throws Octopuses at you. The boss just disappoints me. It’s Larry in a sun-shaped robotic wheel. What disappoints me is that my favorite Koopaling is the easiest boss in the game. Just shoot the blue thing in the center, then shoot Larry’s mech whenever it comes by. The mech will blow up  and Larry will float away. It’s so easy you could beat him in less than fifteen seconds! I’ve seen people do it!

Level 5: Mountain of Spirits
Here’s where things start to get different. This level introduces speed pads. Running over these will make Yoshi go faster. Some of these are just before jumps, so you need to time your jumps just right. The terrain is…well…actually, there IS no terrain. The only land you can see is the road you’re on and the peaks in the distance. Everything else around you is nothing but clouds! Enemies: Paragoombas, Bullet Bills, Bob-ombs, Spinies, and a Sledge Brother. The boss is Morton in a robot frog with a top hat and shoulder cannons. He’s easy enough. Just blast the cannons off, then blast Morton whenever he comes out until the mech breaks down.

Level 6: The Grand Bridge
Not that hard, either. Again, there’s no terrain, just the twisting and turning bridge and the surrounding water. Enemies: Paragoombas, Paratroopas, Bloopers, Cheep Cheeps, Koopa Shells, Bob-ombs, and a Boomerang Brother. Iggy is the boss. He pilots a robotic Blooper. He’s a little hard because the spots you need to shoot (the parts where the tentacles connect to the body) are small and hard to shoot directly. Anyway, shoot those, then whenever it jumps out of the water, shoot the purple ends of the bottom tentacles. The mech will blow up, leaving poor Iggy floating on a piece of debris.

Level 7: Sky Castle I
A little annoying, but still kinda easy. Again, no terrain, just clouds and pillars in the distance (this doesn’t look much like a castle if you ask me). Enemies: Bullet Bills, Nipper Plants, Podoboos, Spinies, and a Sledge Brother. The boss is Roy in a hotair balloon with arms. He’s not so hard, but it really gets annoying when the balloon throws bombs. Anyway, just shoot the cannon on the bottom and the arms, then shoot Roy whenever he sticks his head up… Why do Lemmy, Morton, and Roy do that anyway? Don’t they know that if they didn’t stick their heads up they’d be invincible?!

Level 8: Cornice Cave
Once again, easy. The terrain is pretty huge for a cave. The background also looks like Chocolate Island in Super Mario World. Enemies: Paratroopas, Monty Moles, Podoboos, and a Blue Firesnake. The boss is Kamek… or some Magikoopa. Just keep blasting him until he makes himself bigger. When he does this, you MUST blast him only in the face, which isn’t hard because his face is so big it’s hard to miss. He has a very unfortunate end- he blows up!

Level 9: Boo Mansion
The hardest level in the game!!! It’s also the longest! The Boos are especially annoying. The inside of the house is big enough to fit an entire city in it! Enemies: Boos (duh!), Nippers Plants, Podoboos, and… a Lakitu?! What a strange place to find a Lakitu! The boss is Big Boo. (Come on! Don’t tell me you didn’t see that coming) He’s just as annoying is the rest of the level. He flies left and right while chunks of debris randomly fly at you out of nowhere. The trick is blasting him in the face until he splits into three Boos. Shoot the one with his tongue stuck out to beat him.

Level 10: Sky Castle II
About the same difficulty, terrain, and enemies as the first sky castle… except the sky is purple and the pillars are ruined. The boss is also different, and a little annoying, too. It’s a Chargin’ Chuck. Just blast him in the face. His bomb throwing is very annoying though, and when he jumps and stomps the floor, you can’t shoot. A Starman would come in very handy here! If you get a Mushroom instead, then prepare for a whole lot of shooting!

Level 11: Dark Keyes
It’s not TOO hard. The “terrain” is a chain of small islands that are strangely lined up straight. Everywhere else is water, and any minor hit from an enemy can knock you into the water. Enemies: Cheep Cheep, Bloopers, Nipper Plants, and lots and lots of Paratroopas! The level itself doesn’t take a while, but the boss does! It’s a huge sub piloted by four Koopa Troopas. It may take a while, but it’s very easy actually. Just blast each Koopa as they appear, then blast the sub in the mouth until it blows up and sinks.

Level 12: Bowser’s Castle
This is a total disappointment. The last level in the game, and it's super easy! The inside doesn’t look much like a castle. It’s just a brick road. Everywhere else is nothing but lava. There are two parts to this level. Enemies in the first part: Paragoombas, Paratroopas, Bullet Bills, Podoboos, and Mechakoopas. Enemies in the second part: a Hammer Brother, a Boomerang Brother, a Lakitu, a Sledge Brother, and a Blue Firesnake. After those guys comes the final boss, Bowser! (Duh!) He’s all geared up! Despite this, he’s still pretty easy, but you’ll need to shoot a lot to beat him. The key is to blast his arm guns first, then whenever he opens his stomach cannon, you MUST shoot it before it shoots you. If this cannon shoots you, it will hurt you bad! Once the armor blows off Bowser, shoot his arms. His shell throwing is very annoying and can take a lot off your health bar. After breaking his arms, you shoot into his mouth until he gives up.

Well, there’s a walkthrough for each level. If anyone has trouble beating the levels (which I doubt), just lookie here!

Control: 9

I wouldn’t know how heavy the Super Scope is! I play this game on an emulator! HAHAHA!!!

Overall: 10

I really think there should be more shooter games in the Mario series, because this is one awesome game! I honestly don’t know why this game is forgotten by many. After all, this is the game that introduced the Super Scope, and all you Super Smash Bros. Melee fans oughta know that (don’t take that remark personally!). Anyway, it’s also the first American game to refer to Peach by that name.

Recommendation:
I’m sure you know how hard SNES games are to find these days. If you want this game, then take my advice: Download an SNES emulator, then download the game on it. If you want the game on the SNES, then good luck finding the Super Scope!
