Sonic Riders Review

By Zoshi

A silver-colored Yoshi walks up to the camera. "Hi! I'm Zoshi!! I am a newbie reviewer, this is my second one. I would like some applause now! NOW!!!"

*Applause*

"Thank you... Anyway... Today, I will be reviewing Sonic Riders, it's a new type of racing game! An awesome one at that. I'll rate on a 1 to 10 star scale, 1 is a pathetic waste of gas, and 10 is like 100 MPH!!! I won't rate the system or the rating. Now start to read the Review. NOW! BYE!"

System: GameCube, X-Box, Playstation (though I'll only review the GameCube version.)
Rated: E for Everyone

Story: **********
"The story is awesome, it starts out (in Hero Mode) with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles looking for a Chaos Emerald, Tails sees that something is jamming his radar, and then they here a window shattering, they turn around and see 3 thieves on floating boards, flying away from a building. They then start to chase them, and Knuckles manages to knock one of them off their board. He grabs on to his partner's board as they fly away. Sonic sees the remaining board, and gets on it to chase the thieves. He gets next to their leader, and starts to race in front of him, Sonic turns around and he's gone... He looks up and like a missile, the leader strikes down at Sonic, knocking him off his board... After gloating, the thief gets away, and Sonic says, "Huh, new competion!" as they ride away.

"Later they see a giant screen turn on, and Dr. Eggman is talking about the EX World Grand Prix, the competion to see who is the best with Extreme Gear (the floating boards mentioned before). Then Dr. Eggman says that he has hired the best racers that exist, and then 3 bird-like creatures appear: Jet the Hawk, Wave the Swallow, and Storm the Albatross. Sonic is surprised to see that they are the same thieves that he saw the night before! So now, as Dr. Eggman says, let the race begin!"

Graphics: *********
"The graphics are just really good 3D graphics, every character was made to look perfect in 3D! For example, the first scene where the thieves escape, the second one where they find the Emeralds, and the third one at the end are in high definition. The rest are normal like in-game.

"I took off a point because, when you’re playing with shoes or in the intro of the race, the feet of the players are unreasonably big, but except for that fact it would have got a 10."

Music and Sound: **********
"All the music was made especially for this game, including the movie that comes up when you turn on the game.

“When you purchase the Hang-On or the Super Hang-On, the music is changed and replaced with, in my opinion, a really awesome tune.

"When you make tricks and land, the sound effect is changed depending on the rank of trick you did."

Levels: *******
“Some of the levels are really cool, and others are just plain pathetic. There are some levels that are so bad, I thought my GameCube would explode! And seriously, I thought my GameCube was turning from silver to red...

"The one thing that is good is that each level has its own counterpart that's equally cool, and even if the level is horrible, the counterpart is usually better."

Gameplay: *********
"The game is really cool because there is no other racing game like it! There are 3 types of characters: Speed, Flight, and Power. Which character has which power, I'll explain later."

Speed
These characters can grind on rails. To grind, jump with A and press A again to start grinding, and if the rail ends and there is another one in front of it, repeat the steps above. The rails start with a bright blue point and end on a red point.

Flight
These characters can fly when they run off certain ramps. There is no need to jump, just run off it with your board, or shoes or whatever you're using. You fly up by moving the control stick down, and go down by moving the control stick up. If you fly through floating rings in the air, you gain speed and go faster.

Power
These characters can knock down any obstacles in their way: cars, debris, statues, etc. There are some levels where there are shortcuts that can only be accessed by Power characters, so take full advantage.

"There are also various types of tricks that can be performed. Depending on what, how many, and how long, tricks can give you different ranks. These are, from worst to best: Rank C, Rank H, Rank FF, Rank FH, Rank B, Rank A, Rank S, Rank SS, and Rank X.

"You can also make use of other people’s turbulence. This way you can gain air, without using any of it.

"There are also various types of Extreme Gear Boards, as well as shoes, motorcycles, and scooters. There have been suspicious cases with a banana, a cloud, a broom, a carpet, and an Emerald. Some give other characters another skill, some improve that skill, and others just have different stats."

Controls: *******
"There are lot of controls to memorize, but when you memorize them, you don't forget them! I'll explain each control and explain what it does. The menu controls are so obvious, so I won't explain them. I also won't explain the controls that don't do anything, like the C-Stick and the Z button."

A Button - Charges jump, and when on the edge of a ramp you'll jump high in the air. It is also used to grind on rails.

B Button - This gives you a boost, and if you are next to somebody you'll hit them, hindering their progress.

Control Stick - This is used to move your character around and run. If you are in turbulence or when you jump off a ramp, use it to perform tricks. It can also be used to steer while in flight.

Start/Pause - Pause the game.

L + R - When pressed simultaneously, they make a tornado that can spin out a character and cost them a lot of progress.

R + Control Stick - Power slide, this lets you slide without losing speed.

A + Control Stick - Control the direction of a jump, and if on a ramp, makes you jump higher or further.

"This game requires a lot of pressure. I seriously broke a controller with this game. I mean it. I am not kidding. In the game, you have to move the control stick in circles, and I broke it. Then when jumping, I broke the A Button, now when I press it, it gets stuck in its place. Be careful how you play the game, that's why I took 3 stars off this section!"

Characters: **********
"There are a lot of characters to choose from, but I don't want to spoil the game, so I'll just tell you the characters you start out with. If you want a full list of characters and how to unlock them, Email me at the hyperlink shown above with my name on it, or through the comment thing at the bottom of the screen."

This is how the info will be organized:

Name
Skill
Board
*Fact*

Sonic The Hedgehog
Speed Type
Blue Star
Sonic has always been known as the world's fastest but, inexperienced with Extreme Gear, he will have to fight to hold on to this reputation.

Miles "Tails" Prower
Flight Type
Yellow Tail
He loves to tinker with machinery and is pitching in as the team mechanic, fixing up the Extreme Gear.

Knuckles The Echidna
Power Type
Red Rock
He is quite hard-headed, which makes him gullible, and he has been tricked by Eggman more than once. He plans to show Eggman that he means business!

Jet The Hawk
Speed Type
Type-J
Known as the Legendary Wind Master, Jet leads the Babylon Rogues, a skilled group of thieves. Jet's skills have earned him an impressive reputation from far and wide.

Wave The Swallow
Flight Type
Type-W
She is more like Tails's counterpart. She loves machinery, and Extreme Gear is her specialty. Her knowledge with Extreme Gear surpasses both Tail's and Eggman's.

Storm The Albatross
Power Type
Type-S
He is Jet's right-hand man. What he lacks in smarts, he makes up for in raw power. He has a quick temper, but is slow in movement. He tends to stutter when excited or flustered.

Amy Rose
Speed Type
Pink Rose
She is deemed Sonic's "girlfriend", and probably only entered the race to be closer to him. Though she doesn't play a really big role in the game, she is a starting character.

Difficulty: ********
"This is the type of difficulty I like: easy, then slowly getting harder. Though you can get stuck on some levels, it does get fun. It took me 2 entire days to beat Wave the first time I raced her in Hero Mode as Tails.

"The last levels of Babylon Mode are incredibly hard, so warning, okay?"

Replayabillity: *********
"I bought this game in Febuary, 2007, and I have beat it about 8 times and am playing it now as I'm writing this. The promise of winning new characters and boards can't keep me away from the game! It's a pretty cool game to play over and over again. Even if you beat the whole game, you don't have to erase it to beat it again!"

Fun Factor!: *********
"The game is really awesome! I love to play this game whenever I have free time! It is really fun to play. If you are an SSX Tricky fan, this game is perfect for you!"

Overall: ********.8
"That is what the calculator said. My opinion is:”

Overall: **********
"This game is totally awesome, I recommend it for you gamers who love to race, and even more to Sega fans. It has an excellent assortment of characters once you unlock them all, and it's fun to play and replay. When I bought this game” *angelic noise* “I thought I had reached Heaven...” *There is then a tire screech, a horn, and a crash; oh yeah, an explosion too.* “So if you buy this game, you will not regret it, I am 99.99% sure."

*Thanks to the Instruction Manual for the facts on the characters.
