Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong’s Quest Review

By Koopa know-it-all

PRODUCED / DEVELOPED BY: Rare / Nintendo
PLATFORM: Super Nintendo (Game Boy Advance)
YEAR OF RELEASING: 1995 (for SNES) and 2004 (for GBA)
NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 1 to 2
GENRE: Action / Adventure

As I mentioned in my previous Review, the Donkey Kong Country sequels got two sequels, three remakes, and two Gameboy ports. In here, I'm going to tell to all the readers the main differences between the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Gameboy Advance versions. Read, or else...

STORY - 8
It began with the classic Mario scheme... Donkey Kong was resting at the beach, but then, King K. Rool (dressed as Kaptain K. Rool in this game) kidnaps him and asks for the banana hoard as ransom. Then, Diddy and his girlfriend Dixie go to Crocodile Isle, the Kremilngs’ lair, to rescue him. The only major difference between the SNES and the GBA versions is that on the GBA there is an animated cutscene telling the story (most of the game is composed by animated cutscenes), just like its predecessor.

GAMEPLAY
SNES Version – 8.5
The gameplay is more varied than in its predecessor. There are some items that were taken from the previous game, but other ones were introduced, for example:

BANANA COINS: Golden coins with a banana bunch drawn on it. Collect these to buy some information from the Kongs.
CRANKY'S VIDEO GAME HERO COINS: Big coins with a "DK" in it. Find these to increase your status as video game hero.
KREMKOINS: Found after completing a bonus, they’ve got K. Rool's face on them. Give 15 to Klubba at Klubba's Kiosk to unlock one phase of the Lost World.

Some Kongs return...

CRANKY KONG: Opens a "Monkey Museum", where you can buy some (very enigmatic) information of where to find DK coins and bonuses.
FUNKY KONG: Once more, the surfer Kong operates his flying system. However, you must pay two Banana Coins to fly this time.

Other Kongs are brand new.

SWANKY KONG: Donkey's cousin, he's a gameshow host. Answer all his questions correctly to win lives.
WRINKLY KONG: Cranky's wife works as teacher at the Kong Kollege, where you can buy some information on how to play and save your game (2 Banana Coins at hand!).
KLUBBA: Although he isn't a Kong, he can be very useful! He operates his “Klubba's Kiosk", where you must pay 15 Kremkoins to unlock the famous Lost World.

There are new and returning animals as well.

RAMBI: The rhino from the previous game has the same functions as before, but now he can kill the bees and has a powerful supercharge.
ENGUARDE: Yeah, the good ol' swordfish! He's the underwater Rambi, and even has a superstab too.
SQUITTER: A very big spider that can spin webs to kill your enemies and also make some web platforms that last for a short time.
SQUAWKS: Unlike carrying a flashlight as in the previous game, he now carries the Kongs and can spit eggs by pressing the Y button.
RATTLY: A rattlesnake that jumps very high.
GLIMMER: An anglerfish that serves like Squawks in the previous game and is found in only one level, "Glimmer's Galleon".

Our heroes also have dashing moves.

DIDDY KONG: The sidekick of the previous game is now the main hero! He has the same abilities as in the previous game: his cartwheel, he carries barrels as a shield, and makes it easier to destroy hard enemies and find secret doors, yada yada yada.
DIXIE KONG: Diddy's girlfriend, she has a gigantic ponytail that she can use to grab barrels and glide temporarily.

By pressing the "A" button, the Kongs will team up. In this mode, you can throw your partner to the sky, which makes it easier to find bonuses and items.

GBA Version – 9.5
This version hasmore items, for example, the feathers: use them to be the best in the minigame "Expresso Racing". There's also many more DK coins and minigames and a new boss, Kerozene. However, if you want to repeat any boss, you'll have to pay Swanky Kong 10 Banana Coins.

GRAPHICS
SNES Version – 8.5
The graphics are brighter than and not as blurry as in the previous game, but it still needs to be improved.

GBA Version – 9.5
The graphics got extremely detailed and bright, but some things from the original version were changed. For example, in the rollercoaster levels, it was night in the original version, but it is afternoon in here.

MUSIC
SNES Version - 9
The music got much better from the previous game. My faves are the rollercoaster theme, the Lost World theme, and Funky's theme.

GBA Version – 9.5
The music wasn't made by Rare's in-house composer David Wise, but it is quite good. All of them were remixed; some got even better than in the original version, some became terrible. Some that got better than in the original are "Krook's March", (castle theme), "Kannon's Klaim" (mine), "Crocodile Cacophony", (battle with K. Rool), "Haunted Chase" (theme of the level "Haunted Hall), and "Snakey Shanty" (theme of the level "Rattle Battle"). The ones that were good in the original but became quite bad in the remake are "Lost World Anthem" (Lost World theme; it lost that emotion it had in the original), "Disco Train" (rollercoaster theme; lost the emotion too) and "Funky, the Main Monkey" (as you should’ve guessed, it's Funky's theme; it's no longer as funky as in the original version).

FUN FACTOR! - 10!
The game is even funnier than its predecessor, once more when Cranky speaks. Sometimes he'll call Squitter "a clumsy spider" and Squawks "a fat parrot". Also, there is a reference to Link, Yoshi, Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Earthworm Jim. Cool, huh?

FINAL NOTE
SNES Version - 9 The game is very cool and has been improved very much since the original "DKC". However, doesn’t have the steel barrel from the previous game... or the tires... or Expresso... or Winky... But it's very good nonetheless.

GBA Version – 9.5
The game got bigger, better, and more varied, but its replayability is very bad, mainly because of that "pay 10 Banana Coins to beat a boss" thingy. However, the minigames are very cool and make the game last very long.

THE MINIGAMES AND TASKS FROM THE GBA VERSION
EXPRESSO RACING: Hey, Expresso's back! In this minigame (of Cranky), you must find the feathers scattered around every level. Then, choose "Expresso Racing" on Cranky's menu and "Power up" to power up Expresso's strength, speed, flight, and boost using the feathers. Win all the races to win DK coins and a picture of Expresso.

BAG A BUG: In this Klubba's minigame, pay 5 Banana Coins to play. In here, grab all the bugs you can to win prizes, but watch out for Klubba! He can knock you out and make you lose all your bugs.

WRINKLY'S HOMEWORK (SCRAPBOOK): Choose "Homework" on Wrinkly’s menu. Then, she'll give you a notebook for you to fill with pictures of the baddies you'll find. To do so, kill every enemy with a camera above its head. Fill one page with photos to win a DK coin.

FUNKY'S GAMES: Complete these to win DK coins and Funky's photo. You must complete tasks using Funky's plane. These games are "Aerial Loop", "Submerged Stint", "Kongnapped", "Kongnapped 2", "Kongstruction", "Toxic Kongstruction", and "Cool Sounds".
