Mario Party DS Review

By ckday

When I first got Mario Party DS, I thought about reviewing it. And I finally got my Review up and running. This is my first Review. It will be rated on a 1-10 scale.

Rating: E for Everyone
Genre: Party

Story: 10
The story was GREAT!!! One night in the Mushroom Kingdom, 5 dazzling objects fall from the sky. One lands near Mario! The next day, Mario shows it to his friends. It’s a sky crystal! Then there’s another surprise. Kamek drops off a letter to Mario and Co. from Bowser, saying he’s throwing a big Bowser bash to apologize for being such a big jerk. Bowser also sends an invitation to DK, and he and Diddy race off for the food. However, it is a trap, and Bowsers turn Mario and Co. to the size of chess pieces and steals their sky crystal. Bowser flings Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Toad, Wario, and Waluigi far away. The heroes pick themselves up and look at the mega world around them. But the mini heroes agree there is no time for sightseeing, not when they have work to do. The heroes all jump in to be the one to bring down Bowser. Even the best of friends become fierce rivals when it comes to saving the world. And so our heroes set off to bring down Bowser.

Gameplay: 10
The play is pretty much like in most Mario Parties. Hit a dice block, move that many spaces, and after events and etc, your turn ends. After all 4 or 2 players move, you play a minigame. Winning a minigame earns you 10 coins except for coin cache games where you earn as many coins as you collect. There are 6 types of spaces. Blue spaces earn you 3 coins. Red space cost you 3 coins. Happening (green) spaces make an event happen. Bowser spaces make a Bowser event happen. Duel spaces start a duel minigame against a player of your own choice. And friend spaces give 5 coins to you and another player of your choice. This space turns into duel spaces after the Final Five Frenzy event happens at the last five turns as a side effect. There is a Party Mode, Story Mode, Minigame Mode, Puzzle Mode, Multiplayer Mode, Gallery Mode, and a Mic Test. There is also Mario Party points that, when you get enough, unlocks items. You earn them from minigames, Party Mode, etc.

Levels: 11
Huh? How is it over 10? Oh well. The levels are AMAZING!!! Although the levels are technically boards, you can consider them levels. There is a garden, a music room, DK’s statue in a jungle, a magical library, and a pinball machine (yay!). Each board is different in effects and appearance. Wiggler’s Garden is a basic course, but was the course shown in E3 2007. Toadette’s Music Room has many instruments that cause different effects, not to mention notes hand out the Stars; each note sells Stars at different prices. DK’s Stone Statue has many zany events, such as walking across tightropes or getting sent to either the Star spot or the start; the Star space stays in the same place; and if you have enough coins, you can buy more than one Star at a time! Kamek’s Library is magical and trap-filled, from moving to a different side of the room to getting three Minus Blocks and getting your positions switched. You buy Stars from magic jars; there are three. One sends you back to start, one has coins, and one has the Star; you need 10 coins to open a jar. Bowser’s Pinball machine is the unlockable board and is the board with the most traps, from getting hit by a flipper to getting shot out of a cannon! There is a coin cache that lets you get free coins by rolling the same number as the ones on the sides. There is also a plunger that sends you into the Bowser Zone; land on a space there, and Bowser will do his Zero Flame which makes you lose EVERYTHING! From coins to Stars to items, yes, EVERYTHING!  But he will occasionally overshoot and you’ll end up in the Star Zone, which lets you get from 1 to 3 stars! Yep, real creative.

Mario-ness: 11
This is my own section, as I will ONLY review Mario games. Anyways, this is all Mario we’re talking about. And Toadsworth is mentioned in board features!

Controls: 10
I really don’t care about this. You can use either the control pad to or the stylus to play. Some of the minigames use the buttons and others use the stylus, and the occasional minigame uses the mic. You use A the most to hit dice blocks, accept, etc.

Stylus Controls: 10
So difficult. NOT! I mean, you use the stylus for everything in Stylus Controls.

Mic Controls: 10
You only use the Mic in minigames. You only blow into it.

Party Mode: 10
Like the party mode from all of the other games except Advance, you choose settings, characters, and etc. Then go on a board and play! If you switched bonus Stars to yes, three random bonus Stars will be handed out to the players. The person with the most Stars wins. If there is a tie, it will go by coins, and if players have the same amount of coins, it is decided with a dice block roll.

Story Mode: 11
Add the story with going through each board and boss fights, and this is what you get. Go through the boards in order. After beating the board, you must beat the boss. In order, this is the boss each board has:
Wiggler’s Garden = Piranha Plant
Toadette’s Music Room = Hammer Bro
DK’s Stone Statue = Dry Bones
Kamek’s Library = Kamek
Bowser’s Pinball Machine = Bowser (Cube Bowser)

Minigame Mode: 11
There are many things to do here. Free play is available from the start, the rest of the modes except Boss Bash and Rocket Rascals are available once you have enough minigames. Boss Bash is available once you have every boss minigame, and Rocket Rascals is unlocked after beating Boss Bash at least once. Each minigame gives you 20 Mario Party Points. Here is an organized list of every minigame and its rating:

Puzzle Mode: 11
Yep, a mode dedicated to puzzles. You start out with puzzle collection. In puzzle collection, there is… PIECE OUT FROM MARIO PARTY 5?! OH YEAH!!!! AND Stick & Spin from Mario Party 7! SWEET!!! The other three are Mario’s Puzzle Party from 3, Bob-omb Breakers from 4, and Block Star from 6. Come to the Puzzle Mode main menu after beating Story Mode for the latest and (one of the) greatest puzzle games. I won’t spoil it, but it is awesome! Please, Nintendo, make Puzzle Mode in the next Mario party!

Multiplayer: 10
WHAT?! NO WI-FI?! Oh, wait; it’s DS Download Play. You only need one gamepack. COOL! I’ve never tried this before, but I want to play it with my friend, Caitlyn.

Gallery: 11
HOW IS THIS GAME GETTING STRAIGHT 10s AND 11s?! It’s that good of a game. Here you can view your collection, view your story, view your records, play your sounds, or see your minigame set. In collection, there are board features, boss trophies, character figures, or badges. If you look beside your Mario Party points you will see something, probably the word DS. That is a badge. You can change it in Badges. My current badge is Yoshi Master. I got it by beating Story Mode with Yoshi. By the way, I am 10% Yoshi, ironically. I won’t get into too much more information here, but to unlock boss trophies, you need to beat them a certain number of times.

Mic Test: 11
You’re probably wondering what I’m doing rating this. The answer is, I love the mic test. To find it, look below multiplayer. If the bar up top is empty, it didn’t detect sound. If it is one third full, you are too quiet. If it is two thirds full, you are speaking at the perfect voice. If it is full, you are too loud. It has no music, but who cares? Nintendo probably intended for you not to use this much or at all. I personally suggest coming here often for maximum fun.

Graphics: 10
The graphic were amazing, full of color and sort of like a square to give it an unfinished feel, like you’re staring right at the NES graphics.

Music and Sound: 11
Such a variety of music. I love the sound when you get a Star.

Characters: 11
Let’s see… You have Mario, Luigi, Peach (my favorite), Yoshi, Wario Waluigi, Daisy, and Toad. Not to mention the bad guys, Bowser, Jr, Kamek, and The Minimizer Wand. The ones with minor roles are Wiggler, Toadette, DK, Diddy, Koopa, and Old Koopa in a Book. The bosses are Piranha Plant, Hammer Bro, and Dry Bones. Toadsworth gets mentioned sometimes. WOW!!!

Difficulty: 10
Not much here, but in my Reviews a lower score is ALWAYS bad.

Replayabillity: 11
Replayabillity is what Mario Party games are all about! I REALLY don’t need to go into this much.

Fun Factor!: 12
WHAT?! OVER 11?! AT 12 WHEN THE LIMIT IS 10?! HOLY!!! This is an amazing game! I bought this game two days after release (release date was November 19th 2007) and so far, I have only taken it out of my DS slot 3 times! WOW!!!

Overall: 12
If you own a DS or are a huge Mario fan or both, you MUST have this game. If not, you are not a true Mario fan or are an alien. If neither, get a DS and get this game. NOW!!! If you don’t you are not Human, Yoshi, Koopa, or whatever you are.

Next game I will review: Mario Party Advance.
