Super Mario Advance 4 Review

By Shrugger Shroob

Shrugger Shroob here with my first Review. Today I’ll be reviewing the remake of Super Mario Bros. 3: Super Mario Advance 4. I have never played the original, so I cannot compare the two. This will be graded on a 1-10 scale.

Graphics: 8
Pretty good for an NES remake. I took two points off because most of the enemies look absolutely HORRIBLE. (Koopa, anyone?)

Music: 5
The only remarkable themes are the obstacle course theme, the doomship theme, and the boss theme. The other, well, I’ll just say that the horrible music on this page comes from this game. (And yes, Crazy Packers Fan, I have heard the ending music!)

Story: 7
One stormy night, the Koopalings invade the palaces of the seven kings of the Mushroom World! They steal the kings’ wands and turn them into various Mario creatures! Now it’s up to the Mario Bros. to get the wands back and turn the kings back to normal!

The storyline is standard fare for 2D Mario platformers, in other words.

Characters: 5
“What? How can a game with the KOOPALINGS in it score a 5 on characters?!” That’s what you’re probably thinking right now. My point is, even up to this point, there are an extraordinary amount of enemies in the Mario universe. NOT JUST KOOPAS. While I quite agree that Bowser should be the final boss, there should be a different species of boss for each level. As for the other characters, they’re pretty good, especially Toad and the kings!

Items: 8
A LOT of items here. My only complaint is the Raccoon and Tanooki Suits. You see, flying with them wears your right thumb out from pressing the A button. Also, hitting an enemy with your tail is FREAKISHLY hard.

Controls: Depends on if you’re using the DS or GBA SP
If you control this on an SP, most of the time you’ll accidentally turn the volume up, get startled, and accidentally fall or run into an enemy. On the DS, there’s less of a chance of that happening.

Gameplay: 9.5
It’s a 2D Mario platformer. OF COURSE IT HAS GOOD GAMEPLAY.

Difficulty:
How much is present: 9.5
How much I like it: 0.5
Arrrrrggghhhh! This game is FRUSTRATING! It took me about 5 years to beat it! Basically every level after the end of Desert Hill requires Mario super or above! In fact, I DO NOT KNOW HOW I WOULD HAVE BEATEN THE LAST FORTRESS IN PIPE MAZE WITHOUT P-WINGS I GOT FROM REPLAYING 1-4!

Length: 3
The insane difficulty makes the game seem longer than it really is. The levels, if you can survive them, are REALLY REALLY short.

Replayability: 2
Once you beat it, the only things you can do are beat all of the levels and get all of the White Mushroom Houses.

Mario Bros: 7
A fun little game that you can play between levels.

LL Value: 10
This is a new section that I will put in all of my Mario Reviews. Basically, this section tells how much this game is referred to on Lemmy’s Land. AND IT IS REFFERED TO A LOT. This game introduced doomships, Koopalings and their magic wands, and a lot of other stuff that is on Lemmy’s Land very, very, very frequently.

Fun Factor!: 5
The high difficulty takes away from the fun A LOT.

Overall: 8
A good game, but not as good as its sequel, Super Mario World. However, UNLESS YOU ARE A MASTER OF THIS GAME, DO NOT GET THE VIRTUAL CONSOLE VERSION! It’s even harder!
