Sonic Adventure 2: Battle Review

By Blah

This is one of my favorite GameCube games of all time, so I thought it would be a good idea to review it. I will rate this game on a 1-10 scale (10 being the best).

System: GameCube
Rating: E for Everyone

Story: 10

I love the story to this game. It’s pretty cool and easy to understand. Anyways, here it is. Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Eggman) breaks into a research facility looking for his grandfather Gerald Robotnik’s secret weapon. It turns out that the weapon is a black hedgehog named Shadow, who looks a lot like Sonic. Shadow tells Eggman to meet him on the space colony ARK. Shadow steals a Chaos Emerald and the military mistakes him for Shadow. Sonic, along with Tails the Fox and Knuckles the Echidna, must stop Shadow, Eggman, and Rouge the Bat from using a secret weapon powered by Chaos Emeralds to destroy Earth. You can either play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles to save the world, or as Shadow, Eggman, and Rouge to destroy it. Got that? Good.

Characters: 7

In this game, there is a variety of characters to play as. Here are the ones from Story Mode.

Sonic: This hedgehog can run at super speed! The goal of Sonic’s levels is to get to the goal ring as fast as you can. I prefer Sonic’s levels better than the others, but that’s just my opinion.

Tails: Tails is a two-tailed fox who is a genius! I’m sort of disappointed that you walk around in a big machine all the time. I liked it in Sonic DX Director’s Cut where you could walk around and fly and stuff. Oh well. This game’s Tails levels aren’t that bad.

Knuckles: Knuckles the Echidna is a treasure hunter who acts really tough (except when surrounded by ghosts). In Knuckles’s levels, you try to find pieces of the Master Emerald, which have been scattered again.

Shadow: Move aside, Sonic! Shadow is the world’s ultimate life form. He looks a lot like a certain hedgehog we know. Shadow’s levels are like Sonic’s, where you try to get to the end as fast as possible.

Dr. Robotnik: Also known as Eggman, this guy has an IQ of 500! His levels are like Tails’s, where you’re in a big machine and you go around shooting things.

Rouge: This bat is a treasure hunter like Knuckles. She LOVES jewels more than anything in the world. In her levels, you hunt for Master Emerald pieces just like Knuckles.

There are also some other characters that you can be in 2-Player Mode. I’m not going to do a big description of them, I’m just going to give you a little list.

Amy
Metal Sonic
Tikal
Chaos
Dark Chao Walker
Light Chao Walker

Music: 9

The music in this game is awesome. The makers actually took the time to put lyrics in most of them. I just wish that Knuckles’s rap music would magically shut off.

Sound: 6

Not the best sounds I’ve heard in my life. The sound isn’t bad, just not exactly good.

Controls: 9

The controls are pretty easy to figure out, and once you get used to them, you’ll be whizzing through the game almost as fast as Sonic can run. Well, maybe not THAT fast.

Graphics: 8 ½

This game’s graphics are pretty good. It’s just that the sync is out of whack a lot. Oh well. Who doesn’t love Sonic in 3D?

Gameplay: 10

Who doesn’t like beating up robots, running as fast as you can, messing around, treasure hunting, curling into a ball, taking care of cute animal-like things, racing, collecting rings, annoying Omochao, breaking crates, whupping Eggman’s butt, and grinding on rails in outer space? *gasp, gasp*

Multiplayer: 9

Multiplayer is awesome. There are lots of things you can do, such as racing, treasure hunting, shooting people, kart racing, Chao racing, and Chao karate. There is enough to keep you and a friend entertained for hours.

Replayability: 10

Once you’ve beaten the game, there is still tons to do. First of all, there are emblems that you collect by beating different missions in levels. Oh, and by the way, want to know how many emblems there are? 180!!! I’m not even halfway done collecting all of them! Not only do you get them by finishing missions, but also by winning Chao races and stuff. There is also Chao World, where you raise and take care of things called Chaos. I’m telling you, if you want to beat everything, then you’re going to be playing for a long time.

Difficulty: 9

This game starts out quite easy, with nice, short levels. No way is the whole game like that. After a while the game gets MASSIVELY HARD. Levels like Final Chase took me HOURS to finish. One of the bosses, Biolizard, is so hard you’ll be sweating by the time you’re done with him. Well, maybe not, but I was.

Levels: 10

The levels are completely SWEET! Later in the game, they get so big, it takes quite a while to finish. They include many items and robots! I like the levels so much, I’m tempted to give them an 11, but I’m not allowed, am I?

Chao: 10

What are Chao, you ask? They’re little creatures that you feed and stuff! You can make their skills go up by giving them Chao Drives that you get from robots. Once they have high enough skills and you’ve had them for a certain amount of time, they will evolve! Most Chao look different as their appearance changes depending on what skills they have. By the way, the 4 main skills are Run, Swim, Fly, and Power. Their appearance also changes if you give them animals. For instance, if you give them a bat, your Chao loses its feet! There are 3 kinds of Chao: Dark Chaos, Hero Chaos, and Neutral Chaos. Depending on what kind of Chao they are, they will look quite different. You can also enter your Chao in Chao race, where you race other Chaos, and Chao Karate, where you fight other Chaos. Once your Chao’s life comes to an end, it will either reincarnate, or die and never come back. It will only reincarnate if you have taken care of it well. If you haven’t, then it will die and NEVER come back. NEVER. You can also take your Chao to school. If it goes to school, it learns how to do things such as play an instrument, and when it is bored, it will sometimes do something that it learned. I could talk about Chao for hours and hours, but I’m going to wrap up this Chao section with a little secret. How to make a Chaos (Pronounced: KAY-oss) Chao. First, you must have reincarnated your Chao at least twice. Then, you must give your Chao ONE of each animal. No more, no less. All 21 of them. NO CHAO DRIVES. Once you evolve it, it will be a Chaos Chao! Trust me. You’ll be hooked on Chaos. They’re just like a virtual pet, only 1,000,000 times better.

Cutscenes: 6

Sure it’s Sonic in 3D, doing cool 3D things, but come on! The sync is so messed up! People’s mouths don’t match what they’re saying at all, and sometimes someone starts talking before another person finishes! At least the cutscenes are better than the ones in Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Items: 6

There’s not a great variety of items in this game. Only about 10 or something.

Secrets: 9

This game is full of secrets, such as power-ups that make life easier, an unlockable boss mode, and much more! There is also a third story once you beat the first two. I don’t want to give too much away, but if you collect all 180 emblems, something special might happen.

Overall: 11

Yeah, I know that 11 is bigger then 10, but this game is wicked awesome! The secrets, the multiplayer, the story, the… the… THE CHAO!!! This is my favorite GameCube game other than Super Smash Bros. Melee!

Conclusion:

If you love Sonic, buy this game. If you sort of like Sonic, buy this game. If you don’t like Sonic, buy this game. In other words, if you don’t have this game, you’re missing out on a great game. Now stop reading this and buy the game. Ok? Ok.
