This is Blah with my second review. Super Smash Bros. Melee is my absolute favorite game for GameCube, so I’m going to review it. The game will be reviewed on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best).
Story: 4
This game doesn’t really have a story. In Classic you fight people and in Adventure mode you battle your way through different levels. The four points came from the Event Matches because they have a bit of a story (“A classic battle between Mario and Bowser!”, etc).
Characters: 7
I love the variety of characters. I was surprised when I heard that Mr. Game and Watch was in Melee. There are 25 different characters that you can play as in the game and many of them are difficult to unlock. Some points were taken off because some characters are almost exactly the same (Pikachu and Pichu, Fox and Falco, etc). Here is a list of the characters.
Starting Characters:
Mario
Bowser
Peach
Yoshi
Donkey Kong
Captain Falcon
Fox
Ness
Ice Climbers
Kirby
Samus
Link
Zelda/Sheik
Pikachu
Secret Characters:
Dr. Mario
Luigi
Ganondorf
Falco
Young Link
Pichu
Jigglypuff
Mewtwo
Marth
Roy
Mr. Game and Watch
Stages: 9
I love almost all of the stages! Especially Poke-floats and Flat Zone! The only stages I don’t like are Onett and Brinstar Depths. In Melee, there is a total of 29 stages. A point was taken off because there’s no Fire Emblem stage. Poor Marth and Roy. Anyways, here is a list of the stages.
Starting Stages:
Icicle Mountain
Peach’s Castle
Rainbow Cruise
Mushroom Kingdom
Pokemon Stadium
Kongo Jungle
Jungle Japes
Yoshi’s Island
Yoshi’s Story
Green Greens
Fountain of Dreams
Hyrule Temple
Great Bay
Corneria
Venom
Brinstar
Onett
Mute City
Secret Stages:
Flat Zone
Mushroom Kingdom 2: Sub-con
Poke-floats
Brinstar Depths
Fourside
Big Blue
Past Kongo Jungle
Past Yoshi’s Story
Past Whispy Woods
Battlefield
Final Destination
Music: 10
The music in this game is awesome! My favorite is the Fire Emblem music. I used to think the Paper Mario 2 music was amazing, but compared to Melee, Paper Mario 2’s music is nothing! Although the Break the Targets Music did get irritating after awhile. Oh well. Just one tune won’t make the score go down.
Graphics: 10
Wow! These graphics are really impressive! Before I had this game, I mostly played Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64. Once I got this game, the graphics amazed me! In my opinion, this game has the best graphics for the GameCube. I also think that the fact that the graphics are 3D and the stages are 2D is really cool. If you don’t like this game’s graphics, I’ll eat my hat.
Controls: 9
The controls are really simple to learn. The control stick makes you move, X or Y make you jump, A is a regular attack, B is a powerful attack, and Z is a shield! There are also many other attacks that you use by pressing combinations of buttons (Down+B, etc). The controls may seem a little weird at first, but soon the controls will be a piece of cake!
Difficulty: Varies
The difficulty of the game depends on the difficulty level you put yourself on and which mode you’re playing. In Classic and Adventure, you choose the difficulty, and in VS Mode, it depend on if the person you’re facing is a good or bad player, or if it’s a COM, you choose what difficulty level they’re on.
Items: 9
There are tons of items in this game. Some of them are old items returning from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64, such as the Hammer, and many of them are new ones. The items are made to make a fighter’s life easier. Each one helps in a way… at least most of them. Bob-ombs are really annoying because if you don’t pick them up and throw them at someone, they start walking around the stage, blowing up whoever runs into them. Anyways, there is a great variety of items such as the Fire Flower blowing fire on anyone in it’s path, the Super Scope which you shoot people with (hold A for a huge shot), and the Metal Box which turns you metal. Also, Pokeballs are back and this time feature a wider variety of Pokemon! There are also crates and capsules that have items inside! Beware though, some crates and capsules blow up once they’ve hit the ground (or a person).
Classic Mode: 7
Classic Mode is where you battle random characters and try to succeed in three bonus modes. Some of the matches are just one on one, but others include a team of people fighting a giant character or fighting a whole team of characters. There is also a battle with a metal character before the final fight. The bonus challenges are Break the Targets, where you try to break all 10 targets, Snag Trophies, where you punch trophies into a hole, and Race to the Finish, where you try to get as far as you can in a certain amount of time. The last battle is classic Code is against a giant glove named Master Hand, and depending on which difficulty you’re on, he has more HP. To beat him, keep hitting him until his HP gets to 0. (Yes, in this match you want it to go down.)
Adventure Mode: 8
Adventure mode is a bit like Classic, but instead of fighting random people, you go through levels like Super Mario Bros, fighting a huge variety of characters. I prefer this mode over Classic because it’s much more difficult and fun. At the end of Adventure, instead of fighting Master Hand, you fight Bowser, who is quite hard.
All-Star Mode: 8
This mode is unlocked after unlocking all of the characters. In All-Star, you fight every playable character in the whole game with one life. If you lose that one life, it’s game over. This mode can be challenging, so toughen up your skills before giving All-Star a shot.
Event Match Mode: 4
Event Match Mode is where you choose different events, each one with a different objective. Surprised by the low score? Sure this mode is pretty fun in the beginning, but once you get past Event Match 20, most of the matches are impossible! I’ve been stuck on some matches for weeks! This is definitely the worst mode in the game.
Training Mode: 5
Yes. In this mode you train and get to know your attacks. This mode is boring if you’re a master at the game. Another thing that disappoints me is that the computer players aren’t strong, even on their highest level.
Multiman Melee: 7
In Multiman Melee, there are many things to do, like the 100 Man Melee, where you battle 100 Fighting Wire Frames, and the 15 Minute Melee, where you try to survive for 15 minutes against unlimited Fighting Wire Frames! This mode is quite fun, but can sometimes be hard.
Home Run Contest: 8
Home Run Contest is where you weaken a sandbag and use the Home Run Bat to hit the sandbag as far as you can. In my opinion, it is pretty fun thinking up strategies to hit the sandbag really far (Down+A attacks work quite well) My furthest distance is 1,578 feet, which I got with Yoshi, and my worst distance was 303, which I got with Captain Falcon.
Break the Targets: 6
Break the Targets is where you try to break all 10 of the targets that are all over the place. In my opinion, this is not very fun. Sure, some of them are fun and easy, but others are close to impossible! My least favorite are Zelda’s and Young Link’s. My favorites are Dr. Mario’s and Mr. Game and Watch’s.
VS. Melee: 10
VS. Melee is by far the best part of the game! You pick which character you want to be, pick the difficulty of any COMs, and choose a stage! You could grab a friend and start some 2-player mayhem! Even better, every match is a new adventure! You’ll be playing this for a loooong time.
Special Melee: 9
Special Melee is just like VS. Melee but a bit different. There are different modes, such as Invisible Melee (everyone is invisible), Tiny Melee (everyone is tiny), and many more. The only bad part of Special Melee is Camera Mode. The 4th controller takes pictures while the others fight. The camera controls are so messed up and confusing! When you try to take pictures and you finally get the camera where you want it, the fighters have usually moved! All of the other modes are really fun.
Tournament Mode: 5
Tournament Mode is where you have a tournament (obviously). The thing is, it takes too long to pick your players, and the tournament is too long itself! Trust me, this isn’t the best mode in the game.
Trophies: 7
What are trophies, you ask? Trophies are things you collect from beating different modes and finding them randomly. Trophies resemble things that have something to do with certain Nintendo games. For example, there is a Meta Knight trophy (from Kirby Superstar). There are also many others, like Daisy and the Great Fox. You can get character trophies by beating certain modes with that character, and there are also trophies of stages in the game! There is also a lottery where you bet coins to get new trophies. There are about 290 trophies in all, and I have about 215. If you want them all, you’ll be collecting for a long time.
Secrets: 10
There are so many secrets in this game, you wouldn’t believe it! Secret characters, secret stages, secret modes… there’s even a secret Sound Test! It’ll take a very very very long time to discover all of the secrets!
Replayability: 10
You can play this game for months on end and not get bored! There are also many secrets to discover and many trophies to collect! Super Smash Bros. Melee is one of those games that never get boring.
Overall: 10
In conclusion, this game is probably one of the best GameCube games of all time. This is the best of all the fighting games ever! There are many secrets and many modes! This is a great game and if you have a GameCube, you should buy it. I promise you will love this game. This is the top-selling GameCube game of all time! You must get it.
