System: Nintendo DS
ESRB Rating: E for Everyone

This is Blah, with his third Review, this time reviewing the sequel to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Darkness! Hey! I’m the first to review this game! Anyways, in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Darkness, not only do you rescue Pokemon, but you also fight outlaws! Okay! Time for the Review!

Story: 7

The story to this game is that you are a human who wakes up and finds himself washed up on a beach. Not only that, but you’ve been transformed into a Pokemon! Another Pokemon finds you and then these two scoundrels, Koffing and Zubat, steal the other Pokemon’s treasure! After getting his treasure back, the Pokemon talks you into forming a rescue team with him. You then go to the Wigglytuff’s Guild and sign up as apprentices. Later in the game, it turns out that a Pokemon named Grovyle is stealing things called Time Gears, which create the flow of time, and when they are removed, time stops in the region that it was in! Why does this Pokemon want the Time Gears? It is your job to find out. Some points were taken off in this section because the story in this game is very similar to the one in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.

Characters: 10

Wow! There’s more than 490 Pokemon in this game! And who is the main character of the game, you ask? Well, the main character is decided after taking a short personality quiz to determine which Pokemon you are. Depending on who you. are a different list of partner characters come up that you can choose from. Here is a list of the main characters.

The Wigglytuff Guild: The Pokemon that work and are apprentices in the guild play a very important role. There’s Croagunk, Chimecho, Bidoof, Sunflora, Corphish, Loudred, Diglett, Dugtrio, Chatot, and the Guildmaster himself, Wigglytuff.
The Kecleon Brothers: These brothers operate the Kecleon Store in Treasure Town.
Duskull: Duskull operates the bank in Treasure Town.
Marowak: This Pokemon has a dojo where you can train.
Xatu: You can bring treasure chests to Xatu, and for a small fee, he will open them and give you the contents.
Chansey: If you get an egg from certain missions, Chansey will take care of it and it will eventually hatch into a Pokemon that will join your Exploration Team.
Electivire: If you want to link moves together, Electivire will do it for some money.
Kangaskhan: If you want to store items so they won’t get lost, put them in Kangaskhan’s Storage.
Grovyle: This fiendish Pokemon is stealing the Time Gears!
Dusknoir: This Pokemon is very mysterious. Is he hiding something?

Music: 5

The music in this game is not that great, and is very forgettable. There is, however, some good music such as the boss battles, which I end up humming a lot. If you’re looking for good music, this game isn’t the best for it.

Gameplay: 8

Wow! This is only the second game where you actually get to BE the Pokemon. The gameplay in this game is quite interesting, using the Mystery Dungeon concept. You go through dungeons, fighting Pokemon and finding the stairs to go to the next floor. Also, dungeons are randomly set, so every time is a new adventure! There are also items you can use to help you defeat Pokemon in the dungeons. You can also do missions where you do things to help Pokemon, such as rescuing them, delivering items, and taking out wanted outlaws.

Graphics: 7

Oh, come on! The Nintendo DS can do better than this! The graphics look about exactly the same as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon! The good thing is that this game has cutscenes that the first game didn’t have. These cutscenes are normally showing a landscape, but some of them are actually quite cool. The backgrounds are also pretty good.

Controls: 10

The controls are perfect in my opinion. A is to do a regular attack or to talk, L+A is a set attack, B or X opens up the menu. and that’s about it! It’s that simple. You can also use the touch screen to do all of that if you want! The controls are so simple that they shouldn’t confuse you, and if they do, you wouldn’t stand a chance in Donkey Kong 64.

Difficulty: 8

For the missions, you can actually choose which difficulty of a mission you want to do, but otherwise, the game is quite challenging. Some dungeons are sure to make you go insane because of their difficulty. Also, many of the bosses are hard because in many battles, instead of battling just one Pokemon, you battle a whole army of them!

Items: 10

Most of these items aren’t thing that you would find in most Pokemon games. such as Apples, which keep your hunger down, and Seeds, which do many things such as reviving you or putting you to sleep and many others. These items are unique and most didn’t even exist until Pokemon Mystery Dungeon came out. This game also introduces Treasure Chests, which Xatu can open and sometimes contain rare items.

Replayability: 10

Does this game ever end? No it doesn’t! There are always missions that you can do and new places to explore. Even after beating the main part of the game, there is more of a story to the game. You could be playing this game for years and still have stuff to do! To make a long story short, this game is LONG.

Overall: 8.5

In conclusion, this game is very fun and exciting. Many surprises await you in this game. If you are a huge Pokemon fan, you should definitely get this game, and even if you aren’t, I think you should get it, put if it’s going to cost you any more than $40, skip it.
