Whether human or Koopa, I think everybody in the universe knows the funny sea-sponge SpongeBob SquarePants. Though it is only in its 6th season, I think, SpongeBob is a phenomenon around the whole wide world. In here, I'm going to tell you, readers, about one of the games that SpongeBob has. Although it was released for PSOne and GBA, I really think that it would be better be only for the GBA. Read below.

STORY - 8
The story is really that nonsensical and funny theme from the show. It's Patrick's birthday, and SpongeBob decides to give him an autographed photo of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. However, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy want some peace, and when SpongeBob arrives at the retirement community where they live, the elder superheroes start giving SpongeBob a lot of tasks that he needs to do if he wants the photo. Not seeing that this is only an excuse so the two guys can rest without SpongeBob pestering them, our yellow hero starts a quest through all the corners of Bikini Bottom searching what Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy want.

GAMEPLAY – 8.5
To search for the bizarre things that Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy want, SpongeBob must travel through all of Bikini Bottom: from the downtown of the city to the prehistoric version of it, from the gloomy and abyssal Rock Bottom (shown on the homonymous episode from the first season) to caves leading to the nucleus of the Earth. Scattered through each level are 100 golden spatulas. If SpongeBob collect them all in one level, he'll win an extra life and unlock the secret level "Six Clams Adventure Land", where the player must collect all the flower coins so he can buy some elements for Patrick's birthday party. But if SpongeBob touches an enemy, he is going to lose all his spatulas, and if he touches an enemy without any spatulas, he'll die. Through his quest, SpongeBob can also find his friends, who will give him items that he can use to defeat enemies or reach high places. Those items are:

JELLYFISH NET: The net that SpongeBob uses to grab jellyfish. Pressing the Square button, SpongeBob will grab the jellyfish floating in the background, and pressing the Circle will make him throw them. The net can only carry five jellyfish.
JELLY LAUNCHER: A ray gun-esque weapon used to throw dried-up jellyfish at enemies. The launcher is stocked by ammo (in this case, a pot with the drawing of a skull with jellyfish tentacles).
BUBBLE BLOWER: SpongeBob uses this to blow bubbles (duh!) that he can climb like a staircase. However, the bubbles will blow up after a time, and the blower is also stocked by "ammo" (a pink pot with a drawing of bubbles).
CORAL BLOWER: The machine featured in the episodes "Reef Blower" and "Squidville", in the game there are not many differences to its function from the cartoon. If SpongeBob finds a piece of coral or anything that can be launched, press the "Square" button to suck it up. Press "Circle" to throw it at a wall, unblocking the passage.
SQUEAKY BOOTS: These boots allow SpongeBob to walk above spiky surfaces without being hurt. Their effect is temporary.
KARATE GLOVE: The big gloves worn by Sandy and SpongeBob when they fight karate. While with this glove, press the Square button to slap enemies and grab items. It's also temporary.
GLOVE WORLD BALLOON: SpongeBob can use this balloon to float. Also temporary.

You can unequip those items by pressing the Triangle button. And, as a final footnote, SpongeBob also will do a butt bounce if you twice press the X button.

GRAPHICS - Mixed 5.5 / 9.5
Well, as I've said, this game was released for PSOne and GBA. The graphics are very nice for the GBA, as they remind me of the "Super Mario Advance series. However, as the graphics didn't change between the two version, for the PSOne it's considered quite dull.

MUSIC - 10!
The music is very catchy, and reminiscent of the ones from the cartoon. My favorite is the battle with Sub-Shark (the boss of the second world).

FUN FACTOR! – 5.5
The game is hard and frustrating, mainly because of that spatula part. Look: you got 98 spatulas. The two remaining are right in front of you. But suddenly, some random slug runs into you, making you lose all the spatulas, and you can only recover half of them! Aw, man... I already went through this.

FINAL NOTE – 5.5 (PSOne) / 8.5 (GBA)
Well, this game was made mainly thinking of the GBA, so I think it's better to buy it for the GBA instead of the PSOne. Hear me.
