Chameleon Twist Review

By ghettobananachris

Chameleon Twist is a little gem made by Sunsoft for the Nintendo 64. Although aimed towards children, this game's appeal can branch out to people of all ages. Up to four players can play this unique game.

Rating Scale: 1 to 10

Story: 3
In this game, you control a regular chameleon (with a backpack...) as he follows a white rabbit reminiscent of the one from Alice in Wonderland into a hole, where you become a deformed, humanoid chameleon. Your goal is to find the rabbit... yeah. The story's not so great, but it has the same charm as the retro games for systems like the NES and SNES, so it is forgivable.

Graphics: 6
Cutesy graphics were the intent here, but empty environments and areas disappearing if you're not close enough severely cuts at the game's visual appeal. Characters’ faces are also hard to read from a moderate distance, but otherwise your eyes will be pleased.

Sound: 8
Why an 8, you ask? The tongue sounds are wonderful, and the music matches the environments. The classic Hanna-Barbera-like sounds elicit nice retro memories. Makes you wonder how retro this game's appeal could be.

Control: 6
Controls are fine in this game, at least until you need to solve a precise puzzle. The tongue's unpredictability during tongue vaults is bothersome, and the camera's terrible controls make the puzzles more difficult than they should be. Just take a few minutes to cool down if the puzzle aggravates you with its control problems.

Gameplay: 7
The single player of this game is great, with innovative eat-and-shoot fighting, tough tongue swinging puzzles, and challenging bosses making it a great playthrough. However, the multiplayer is lacking. You have to try to keep your opponent in a black abyss instead of on the stage. This can be easily done by a vigilant person on the high ground. The single player is an 8 and the multiplayer is a 5, so it averages to about 7.

Replayability: 4
Sigh... I wish this game was more fun after the first playthrough, but it takes about a 2 year interval for it to truly feel fresh to play again. However, the boss fights offer a fun thing to replay, as well as the castle level and its unique challenges.

Overall: 7.5
This game is definitely worth the 20 dollars it goes for on nintendosforsale.com or eBay, so it’s worthy of buying and playing through. The ending's kind of disappointing, but the gameplay is an evolution off of the classic 8- and 16-bit approach to games; focus on the gameplay, not the story.
