Mario Kart Wii Review

By Chase

Ok, so here's my Review of Mario Kart Wii. I will rate on a scale of 1-12 because there are 12 racers.

Graphics: 9
The graphics in Mario Kart Wii are good, but they are REALLY cartoony. I kind of expect better from the Wii.

Plot: 1
What kind of plot is there? None. So 1.

Grand Prix Mode: 11
Grand Prix are fun, but you just can't customize them. More on that next.

VS Mode: 12
Best mode in the game, by far. You can customize it so you race on 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, or Mirror mode. You can set how skilled you want the computers to be. You can set to choose the courses yourself or have them be picked randomly. You can set to if you're likely to get a powerful item or an item that you need to use strategically. Or you can have balanced items. Lastly, you can also set to have 2, 4, 5, 8, 16, or 32 races. By far my favorite mode in Mario Kart Wii.

Battle Mode: 9
Another very fun mode, my second favorite. You can have a balloon battle or a coin runners battle. You can also set how many wins the teams need to win the overall battle. However, there are bad things about battle mode. First of all, you HAVE to play in teams. You cannot battle solo like in Mario Kart DS. Also, you can only use the standard kart or bike. Finally, the courses are either too hard, too easy, or boring. My favorite battle course is Block Plaza.

Items: 12
There are so many items, plenty more than previous Mario Karts. The most dangerous items are Blue Shells, Bob-ombs, Red Shells (yes, Red Shells), POW Blocks, Mega Mushrooms, and Lightning Bolts. Mario Kart Wii adds three new items to the Mario Kart series: the Thunder Cloud, POW Block, and Mega Mushrooms. Thunder Clouds give you an unlimited speed boost and you don't get slowed down in the grass and dirt and all, but you must hit another driver to pass the cloud on or you will be shrunk after a certain period of time. POW Blocks make every driver in front of the user spin out and lose their items when hit. Finally, Mega Mushrooms make the user HUGE so they can flatten any driver except other Mega Mushroom-using players or people using Stars. You're also invincible to other items when using a Mega Mushroom, except Lightning Bolts and Stars.

Difficulty: 12
Very difficult. When I say "very", I mean it. 50cc is annoying. 100cc is scream-inducing. 150cc is brutal. I haven't unlocked Mirror mode yet... not sure I want to either. The reason it is so difficult is the items. Example: You lead the whole race and in the last 15 seconds you get hit by a Blue Shell, a Red Shell, a POW Block, and a Green Shell. So then you finish 6th. It's totally unfair and hard.

Characters: 11
You start off with 12 characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Bowser, Toad, Koopa Troopa, Baby Mario, and Baby Peach. There are also 12 additional unlockable characters. You can also play as your Mii in this! You've also got your usual crowd characters: Goomba, Toad, Koopa, and Boo. And of course, Lakitu fishes you out of water, lava, and more, plus he starts the races.

Fun Factor!: 9
The game is really fun, but it's not too fun when you get nailed by Blue Shells and Red Shells constantly. All the modes can make for hours of fun!

Overall: 10
Mario Kart Wii is a great game, and I highly suggest it if you like fairly hard games or racing games. Or both. The thing that makes me take off points is the difficulty, but that's just me. Bottom line: If you have a Wii, get Mario Kart Wii!
