After Super Mario Bros. 2, Nintendo decided to make Mario come back to his original and unique roots. And this made the fans really happy! As you must know, it was one of the best-selling Mario games of all time, and it was promoted by Nintendo in the U S of A in the movie The Wizard. SHOOP DA HOOP!
STORY - 8
Well, in this game Bowser introduces
his children to the world. It is a peaceful day in the Mushroom Kingdom
when suddenly, by command of Bowser, the Koopalings arrive in its seven
districts, steal the magic wands of the kings, and transform them into
different animals. Princess Peach then writes to the Mario Brothers for
them to solve this problem, but as they are on their quest, Bowser once
more kidnaps the princess. Man, Bowser, how many times do you need to be
told? SHE DOESN'T LOVE YOU!!!
GAMPELAY - 9
As I said, this game shows that the
Mushroom Kingdom is divided into 8 districts (although, as the last one
belongs to Bowser, Princess Peach may not count it in her kingdom, for
all I know), each one with its king. Those districts are Grass Land, Desert
Land, Water Land, Giant Land, Sky Land, Ice Land, Pipe Land, and Dark Land.
(In the remake of this game, the lands are called Grass Land, Desert Hill,
Sea Side, Big Island, The Sky, Iced Land, Pipe Maze, and Bowser's Castle.)
In each one of these districts, Mario and Luigi must clear all the levels
to save the king in his castle. Throughout the map of the districts, you
can find:
THE TOAD HOUSES: There are three kinds
of these in here. In the first kind, Toad presents you with three boxes.
Each one contains an item (see what they are below). Just pick a chest.
In the second kind, Toad presents you with a "line up the pictures" game
where you can win extra lives. In the third kind, the little guy presents
you with a memory game where, when you match the pictures, you win the
item displayed.
HAMMER BROTHERS: Defeat them in a battle
to win items.
FORTRESSES: At the end of these castle-themed
levels, you will find the enemy Boom Boom. Defeat him to win a ? Orb. This
orb opens one of the gates scattered across the map, making some levels
and paths accessible.
Besides the already known Super Mushrooms, 1-Up Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, coins, and Starmen, there are now new items for you:
SUPER LEAF: This gives Mario raccoon
ears and tail. With this tail, Mario can swipe enemies and fly for a short
time.
FROG SUIT: This makes Mario jump a
little higher and swim a little better.
P-WING: It gives Mario the raccoon
outfit and allows him to fly ending during a whole level.
JUGEM’s CLOUD: This allows you to skip
one level.
KURIBO’S SHOE: This allows Mario to
walk over spiky surfaces and defeat spiky enemies.
TANOOKI SUIT: The Tanuki is a raccoon-like
animal from Japanese mythology that is capable of becoming a statue. Mario
can also do this with this clothing by pressing Down and B. He also has
the same abilities as in the Raccoon Suit.
SLEDGE BROTHER SUIT: Mario gains Hammer
Brother armor and is capable of throwing powerful hammers.
WARP WHISTLE: Allows you to skip one
world.
MUSIC BOX: It makes the Hammer Brothers
and Piranha Plants on the world map sleep for three turns. It plays Mario's
theme.
ANCHOR: It makes an airship (the Koopalings'
flying ships) stop moving when you are defeated on it.
GRAPHICS - 10!
The graphics now look like very much
like the present Mario. Those clouds and mountains have eyes, while Bowser
his present appearance. They're also very colorful, as always.
MUSIC - 10!
The music is now more varied and cute.
My favorites are the battle with Bowser and the world maps.
FUN FACTOR! – 7.5
Well, the game is very hard in some
of its passages, and can be very frustrating. And the early Mario games,
I really must say, do not have much hunor…
FINAL NOTE – 9.5
One of the best Mario games, it is
funny to play, varied, and indispensable. A must-have for everyone. But
I really recommend the GBA version.
