Super Mario RPG Review

By Midna Koopa

Hey, there. My name's Midna Koopa, and today, I'll be bringing you my Review of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Ratings will be out of 10.

Graphics: 7.5
Okay, so this game doesn't have the best graphics I've seen, but they're pretty darn good. The graphics in this SNES game are actually better than some Wii games I've played.

Music: 10
The music in this game is INCREDIBLE. Whether you're in battle or the field, the music here will amaze you.

Story: 9
Bowser kidnaps the princess AGAIN and Mario has to rescue her. However, this is where the similarities to other games end. After Mario beats Bowser, just as he's about to save the princess, the castle starts shaking. A large sword is shown falling out of the sky, and seven stars can be seen flying off. The sword crashes into the castle, sending Mario flying off. The game really begins after this. I can't tell you any more, but it's a pretty in-depth storyline.

Characters: 8
Mario, Mallow, Geno, Bowser, and Peach are all playable, but only Mario can be used outside of battle. This is kind of disappointing, as the game could've been more fun with different puzzles for certain characters. Another let-down was the exclusion of Luigi, even as an NPC. In fact, the only time Luigi is even mentioned is through his wish on Star Hill. Other than that, however, the characters, both playable and not, are pretty cool, as many of them are essential and unique.

Items: 10
Okay, so I've given a lot of high ranks here, but for good reasons. The items here range from HP-healing Mushrooms and FP-healing Syrups to attack items like Bombs and Rock Candy. Another item that makes this game great is the Starman, which makes you invincible on the field, allowing you to defeat enemies by running into them. It is a great item for leveling up. There are plenty of other items, but that's it for this Review.

Controls: 7
The basic up, down, left, and right controls are pretty simple, but the diagonal controls are annoying and irritating when you are required to use them. Crossing a segmented bridge would be easy in any other game, but the diagonal controls in this game could send you off the bridge and into magma with just one wrong move. The battle controls are pretty simple as well, but if you accidentally press the wrong button when choosing an item or selecting an enemy to attack, you can't do anything about it. This is the way it is with almost all RPG games, but it's still annoying.

Gameplay: 8
The gameplay is pretty good, but the whole concept is pretty bland. You just go from one place to the next, doing whatever the game tells you to do. However, this section got an 8 because the game has a lot of sidequests and minigames, such as the 3 Musty Fears, the Lazy Shell, the Mushroom Derby, and Booster Hill, to name a few.

Difficulty: 7
This game can be pretty challenging, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Though many enemies may annoy and frustrate you, all you have to do is gain experience and level up. It's still pretty irritating, though, when you're about to defeat a boss, but then you lose.

Replayability: 9
This game won't take all that long to beat straight through, but if you try to find every item and minigame, it'll take awhile. Anyways, the game's pretty fun and it's definitely replayable, even if it's only because of the sidequests and boss battles.

Fun Factor!: 9.5
This game will make you laugh, cry, then laugh some more. The whole game is just packed full of fun quests, characters, and dialogue. It's definitely worth playing through.

Overall: 9
A near perfect score, although I had to mark it down for a few flaws. Aside from that, this game is definitely worth what you pay for it. If you own a Super Nintendo, definitely add this to your game collection.

Until next time, this is Midna Koopa, signing off.
