Story: 7/10
Basically the same plot as last time,
so same grade.
Characters: 10/10
The same characters are back. Some
are playable from the start this time (Dr. Kiln), and some are now hidden
(Earthworm Jim). We also have 4 new characters that didn’t make the final
cut of 63 1/3: Lady Liberty, Lockjaw Pooch, High-Five The Severed Hand,
and Fofo, Gling, and Kapu, also known as The Zappa Yow Yow Boyz.
Controls: 9/10
Now you may be wondering how this game
has better control than 63 1/3. Correction: It doesn’t. Back when I reviewed
63 1/3, I had first got the game. Now I realize the game’s control takes
a lot of strategy rather than just mashing buttons. When you press B or
A, it’s a weak punch or kick, C-left and C-down are medium punches and
kicks, and C-up and C-right are strong punches or kicks. Rotating the control
stick and pressing two or more buttons activates a special attack, such
as T-Hoppy’s Jackrabbit Kick or Kung Pow’s Wok Attack.
Now, on to Sculptor’s Cut. The controls are the same, except there is one major thing that rubs me the wrong way: they’ve moved the free-scroll camera from 63 1/3, whereby by holding L or R, you can change the view of your arena. They replaced it with a quick step back, making it harder to do Claytalities. Even so, the controls are still time-consuming and will make you think rather than mash random buttons.
Interactivity: 10/10
No, no, YOU don’t interact with the
game, but the characters in the game have their own individual story. For
example, The Zappa Boyz wants to kick everyone off the island for some
peace and quiet, while BoogerMan wants to save the world from evil. And
each character ALSO fights certain characters, and in the end, fights against
their Island Rival, for example, Bad Mr. Frosty and Sumo Santa, Dr. Kiln
and High-Five, or Blob and Houngan. It’s like, when you finish off with
one character, you may want to start playing as the next to see what their
story is like. I know I felt this way.
Music: 11/10
If the music from 63 1/3 knocked me
off my feet, the additional music made for Sculptor’s Cut will do the trick.
The game now has a cinematic opening, with theme music sung in a Weird
Al Yankovich-type of way; and the character selection screen now has a
catchy little joyous tune.
Levels: 10/10
Same Stages and Scenarios = Same Grade.
However, each level is now located on a fully 3D map.
Overall: 10/10
If you like 63 1/3, take out the credit
card, bug your parents, whatever you have to do. This is the best game
in the ClayFighter trilogy. With soul-soothing music, great individual
plotlines, and funny characters, sound effects, and quotes, ClayFighter:
Sculptor’s Cut is one fighting game you DON’T want to miss out on.
