System: GameCube
Story: 3
Well let’s see… Mario, Peach, Toadsworth and a bunch of Toads take a vacation to Isle Delfino. They land at the airstrip and find a bunch of goo. Mario walks around and finds FLUDD. Mario uses him to get rid of all the goo, then when he is finished they leave for Isle Delfino. Mario is accused of stealing the Shines and putting goo all over the place, so he is forced to get all the Shines back. ONCE AGAIN Peach gets kidnapped… tragic. Shadow Mario, being the one who kidnapped her, goes to Pinna Park to hide. Then Mario goes to save her AGAIN! Mario then defeats Shadow Mario, who reveals himself as Bowser Jr. Unfortunately Bowser Jr. goes to Corona Mountain with Peach. That’s when Mario has to get enough Shine Sprites to be able to defeat Bowser Jr. Unfortunately Bowser is with him.
Now to explain why I didn't rate it higher. For starters the Piantas say all of the Shines have been stolen… but they’re practically keeping all of them! 24 of the Shines are held by 2 stupid bears that are in the main city! Plus many of the Shines are being kept by Piantas! Few Shines are not kept by the Piantas! Not to mention there is a village atop a dangerously high tree in an infinite void! I just don’t get it… And in this game King Boo… well he’s not that bright… AND HE DROOLS!!! Those are all the flaws I can list.
Graphics: 4
The graphics here aren’t bad, but not good either. Not much to say about them… they’re pretty basic. The goop was nicely done, though.
Moves: 5
The moves are pretty nicely done here, like the spin jump where Mario twirls around and you can shoot water out while you’re doing that. Also there’s the classic triple jump. One thing that kind of bothers me is that shooting out Water can make Mario float. It would require much more water to make him float. Of course it’s a game where things can make no sense, like when Mario could swim underwater without having to go up to breathe. That’s not in this game though. But it is in games like Super Paper Mario.
Controls: 5
I don’t see anything wrong with the controls here, so I’ll give it a perfect score.
Music: 4
Almost perfect… I really thought the Ricco Harbor music went well with Ricco Harbor. I kind of thought it should have had different songs for each boss, like Gooper Blooper didn’t seem to go well with the music. But other than that, it’s fine with the music.
Difficulty: 4 1/2
Well… it was kind of annoying on some Shines. But getting all of the blue coins?! That was hard! Of course that’s mastering the game, not just beating it. Hmm… Well I thought Noki Bay was really annoying. Also the giant manta-type thing was a pretty hard boss. But overall I would call the difficulty challenging.
Worlds: 2
One big flaw is the fact that they put a village on top of a dangerously high tree with an infinite void below. Plus, how was all the slime in the water at Ricco Harbor if you can destroy it by shooting water on it? Noki Bay wasn’t even on the island, and for proof there’s the fact that you can’t see any of the other worlds from there. How does looking at the sun teleport you there?! Wouldn’t that hurt Mario’s eyes? One more thing is Pinna Park’s pirate ship rides don’t have any seats or seatbelts! Who would go to a park with dangerous rides and enemies all over the place? WELL?! WHO, I ASK YOU? WHO?! One more thing, how were strange-colored clouds formed in Corona Mountain? There are few worlds in total. The name of each world goes well with… well, the world. But I think they could have added more.
Fun factor!: 4 ½
This game is very fun, though. There’s the Rocket Nozzle, which I love so much, and the bonus levels that you get transported to. Plus there is just a lot of Shines that are plain… FUN! This game has some puzzles in it as well. The game is quite entertaining.
Replay Value: 3
Well when you beat the game you can search for the blue coins and try to find all the secret Shines as well. There’s also the 100-coin Shines… But other than getting more Shines and getting blue coins for Shines, there’s nothing else you can really do.
Overall: 4
Despite all those flaws, it’s still a fun and good game. Sure, there's bears keeping Shines hostage… but it has many fun levels, along with bosses, as every game needs. It’s quite a good game overall.
Recommendation:
Hmm… It’s worth getting as long as you don’t spend over $30, if you ask me. Okay, maybe $35. What I do is try to not look at the flaws… even though it doesn’t always work. Get the game if you like Mario games, is what I can say. Well, what are you waiting for?! GO! Go get it! What’s taking you so long?! Run to the store! Run! NOW!!!
