The introduction of the story is pretty good, Bowser mysteriously giving people an invitation to a party, and then shrinking them. After that though, the story could use a bit more development. They could've explained the significance of the Sky Crystals and how everyone could be returned to normal size before the end of the game. The ending is also good, but I'm not going to spoil it :) The middle parts should have been deeper. It was simply helping people who had problems with Bowser’s minions.
Graphics: 6
While you have to admit that there is a lot of data in this game, the graphics are still subpar. Characters’ feet are nearly square, and there is almost no texture. However, when you are playing a board or minigame everything is in 3D, and so are the characters. It’s much better than sprites. The graphics are almost like Super Mario 64 DS, but a tiny bit better.
Boards: 10
The game boards are great! All 5 have plenty of ? Spaces and something that makes them different from other boards. Out of 5 boards, there are 4 different ways to get Stars. There are plenty of Mole Shops and Hex spots to get items, and most of them are put in smart places. The classic Blue, Red, Star, and ? Spaces are back, and a new space called the Friend Space has debuted. The Friend Spaces turn into Duel Spaces during the last 5 turns. There is a board for everyone. Wiggler’s Garden is for beginners with its simple layout, Kamek's Library is for strategy due to the warps and way to get Stars, DK's Stone Statue is for people good at minigames because you can get as many Stars as you can afford at the Star Space, and Bowser's Pinball Machine is for people with good luck because of the luck-based ? Spaces and coin machine.
Minigames: 10
The meat of Mario Party games, the thing friends brag about when they win them. The games make good use of the stylus, control pad, and buttons. They have the "shrunken down" theme, such as climbing the internal workings of a clock or using a rotating spit roast as a treadmill. They are easy to learn and very fun overall.
Items: 8
There are two kinds of items in this game, unlike other Mario Parties that only have one. They are Hexes, which you put on Blue or Red Spaces on the board, and items you use on yourself. There are classic effects, such as getting two die rolls, and unconventional effects, like setting a Star Block. The items have a good effect on gameplay, as they can make or break a victory. However, there are not very many Hexes, and they usually only do very standard effects, like steal coins or Ctars. The self-use items are more plentiful and usually are more useful to a player.
Single Player: 7.5
Story mode is for the single player. It has all of the storyline, and has unique rules, with a boss minigame at the end to tie the story together. Good and standard. Story mode is not the only thing for a single player though, even Party mode is good without friends. You can hone your skills well here, because computer players aren't as smart as humans on boards, and their minigame skill can be adjusted.
Multiplayer: 9
The game was definitely made for multiplayer. Humans are more fun to play against on minigames and boards. If you want to do a tag party, you want a human partner for sure. You can even play a four-player game with just one gamepak! Good for friends.
Replay Value: 10
MP points are a kind of collectable. You earn them by playing the game in any mode. If you get enough, you unlock things. You need to play the game a lot to earn all of the unlockables. Fortunately, you could play this game for weeks before it gets old, especially if you play with friends. You also can try to beat your high scores on minigames. There are infinite possibilities on the boards, and you can always try something different.
Overall: 9
I highly recommend this game. The replay value is great, most of the boards are complex, and winning is very satisfying. I would know :) There is always something to do. If the graphics were better, the game would get a 10.
