Story: 8
The story is basically the same as
previous games and games that come after it. Bowser takes Peach and tries
to keep Mario from rescuing her. There are some twists, however. For example,
Bowser takes Peach inside her own castle and traps her and all of the Toads
inside the walls. There is also, of course, the taking all the Power Stars
thing.
Gameplay: 10
Keep in mind that this is the very
first 3D Mario game EVER MADE! I think… Anyway, the game is very fun to
play. There are no boring spots in the game, and if you ever get stuck
on a Star, you can just find another one to attempt. When I play the 64
version or the DS version I see no flaws, and this keeps me playing to
the end.
Graphics: 9
Even in today’s generation of videogames,
the graphics of this old game are still acceptable, giving it a higher
score. This (I think) is also the first 3D Mario game so that bumps it’s
score. The only reason that this is not a 10 is because you can find some
3D 64 games with better graphics.
Sound: 8
The background themes can be appealing
and the sound effects are adequate. There are some nice songs in the game
but nothing too special. Not much to say here.
Difficulty: 10
I really wish that later Mario games
were like this one. The Stars at the beginning are easy enough to get and
the Stars toward the end prove to be a real challenge. Obtaining the 70
Stars needed to battle the final Bowser is easy enough, but it is not a
cakewalk for anyone new to the game. Getting all 120 Stars is a different
story though, it is a great challenge and fun to do, but very hard. If
you happen to do it though (like I did) Bowser will say something different
at the end and you will get access to the cannon in the front of castle
near the lake. If you have the game and never got all the Stars…THEN WHY
DO YOU EVEN HAVE IT?! GET THE REST OF THOSE STARS!!!
Moves/Controls: 7
I’ve decided to combine these two since
the moves in the game affect the controls. Anyway, this gets a seven because
they are pretty adequate. Nothing special about the moves in this game.
The controls are a little down because it is easily possible to over jump
a gap and fall to your doom or jump over a Goomba and have him run into
you, etc. The main two attacks are jumping on an enemy or punching him.
There are other ways to kill, such as punching a Bully into lava or throwing
a Bob-omb at another enemy.
Worlds: 9
There are 15 regular worlds with 7
Stars each if you include the 100-coin Stars. (There are 8 Starts per world
in the DS version.) There are also 15 bonus Stars that can be obtained
in secret courses or by doing other things like catching the bunnies or
getting 8 red coins in already explored areas.
Other: No Rating
The game is pretty straight forward.
There is the fact that you are hopping into paintings and going to places
bigger than the castle itself, but that is nothing to worry about. I would
also have liked to see more usage of the castle grounds.
Recommendation: 10
… If you still have a Nintendo 64 and
know where to buy 64 games, THEN STOP READING THIS AND BUY IT!!! This is
a must have game for anyone who has a Nintendo 64 and who even knows who
Mario is. If you don’t have a Nintendo 64 then at least get the DS version!
If you don’t get it or you don’t have it, I will personally send some Elite
White Goomba Solders to destroy everything you have, then tie you to a
chair with your arms free, and force you to play this game. Any resistance
will be met with tying you to a ceiling fan instead. To avoid this, GET
THE GAME!!!
Overall: 9
A NEARLY perfect game for the Nintendo
64, but a perfect game is virtually impossible to come by. Everything in
the game is well designed, and (possibly) being the first console 3D Mario
game ever, the design team did great! As you hopefully read, I HIGHLY recommend
buying this game for anything under $35, but it’s hard to find any 64 games
for that much so cost shouldn’t be any problem.
Next, I will be doing a Review on Super Mario Sunshine, then on Super Mario Galaxy.
