Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance Review

By Pig Koopa

Hello and welcome to the first episode of Pig Koopa’s Review Show. Today I will review Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. This game is an RPG on the GameCube and is rated T. I will rate on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being bad and 10 being good, so let’s begin.

Story: 9

The story is just awesome! You begin as Ike, the son of the leader of the Greil Mercenaries. The prologue is just training, then in chapter 1 you fight bandits. Starting in chapter 4, you start fighting a war that you fight for the rest of the game. Along the way, Ike becomes leader of the Mercenaries; Greil, Ike’s father, dies; and I won’t spoil more than that. This is also the first Fire Emblem game to have Laguz, people that share similarities with humans and the type of animal that they are a tribe to. Once the Laguz gauge fills up they fully transform into that animal, and in the game they are very powerful. The three tribes are Beasts (cats, tigers, lions), Birds (hawks, ravens), and Dragons. I took off because it seems like you always are fighting Daein, the opposite side of the war.

Graphics: 9

The graphics are great! For the first Fire Emblem in 3D, it is wonderful. The reason I took off was that I found a tiny flaw in the graphics, and Melee had slightly better graphics despite being older. Most of the cutscenes are 2D, but they still have good graphics.

Characters: 10

3rd high grade in a row, when will it go down? There is a variety of characters including Ike, Oscar, Boyd, Rolf, Mist, The Black Knight, Nasir, Elincia, and Ena, and that’s just a few of them. Without using an online guide, it might take you up to 5 plays to get all the characters on your team! You just have to play the game to see them all.

Gameplay: 8

Unlike the Mario and Luigi series, there is no action when your opponent is going. Your ability to hit or miss is mostly luck, unless someone is standing in bushes. The good part about no action is that the game will wait for you. You can run to the bathroom at the start of the fight scene, and you’ll be ready to go. Other than that, the gameplay is pretty good. You move as many (or less) spaces as your char allows.

After you move, you choose what you want to do. You can do stuff with items like equip something or use a healing item, you can wait, attack, unlock a chest or door, or you can break down a door. The people that move the most are thieves and horseriders, but thieves don’t have movement cost. Movement cost slows your character down if they are on a hill, sand, or water. There are also flying units that can fly over water, and they don’t have movement cost either. Like all other RPGs, you gain exp. points to level up your characters. In this game, if you do a specific thing in a level, for example, not killing priest in level 23, you can give your troops extra exp at your base. There are 2 different triangle attacks; one is with the three brothers that you get towards the beginning of the game, and the three Pegasus knights. The first uses bows, and the other uses swords. To use it, you go to a space where you can attack with the weapon you’re using equipped, then do this 2 more times. On the last time, you attack and you do a triangle
attack.

You can also let 2 of your characters have a conversation, and in battle, it they are within 3 spaces of each other, they get a bonus. I hardly ever use this, but it still is a good concept. In this game there are also unit classes. Unit class determines what weapons they can use and what their literal level is, e.g. Knight or General. If a knight is level 18, that is what his literal level is. Since a General is an advanced version of a knight, if he is level 18 his literal level is 38. Here are some class upgrades: Knight-General, Ranger-Lord, Priest-Bishop, and Knight-Paladin.

Sound: 3

I have heard worse sound in a game, but this is pretty bad for Nintendo. Most of the songs sound somewhat alike to me. Other than the song on the main menu, the battle theme, and “Life Returns”, the music is miserable. Life Returns is almost all 3 sound points. The sound when someone is talking is very common for Nintendo. I often play with the sound off. Every good game has at least one problem, and this is the one for this game.

Difficulty: 7

The game is not that hard compared to other games I’ve played, but it is still pretty hard. I’ve had this game for a year, and I just beat it. One game that sticks out in my mind that this game is easier than is Lost Magic, which I’ve had for 2 years and still haven’t beaten. Unlike Lost Magic, this game doesn’t have impossible bosses, but getting through without one of your best chars. dieing is very hard. Some chapters that are very hard are 8, 11, 25, 27, 17, and 23. 17 has 4 parts and number 3 is insanely hard.

Items: 7

Most of the game’s Items are different kinds of bows, lances, swords, spells, and axes. The names are things like Iron Axe or Silver Bow. At least most of the spells have cool names like Blizzard and Meteor, plus the vampire spell, Nosferatu. A forge is open so you can make 1 item per visit to base. Once I made a pink hand axe, and when it was thrown it looked so cool. There are some miscellaneous items like speedwing, which increases your speed.

Secrets: 9

There are many secrets in this game. (Yes I love Forest Maze Rawest too) Unlocking all the chars, as I said, is hard enough, but when you beat the game you get trail maps you can play on. When you beat the game on easy you get 1 map, normal 2, and hard 3. Once you beat the game enough times you unlock bonus chars. to play with. That’s about it for the secrets.

Length: 9

This game is plenty long with 28 chapters, 17 has 4 parts, plus there’s a prologue and an endgame. I know some games are longer, but this will take more than a few hours to play.

Replayability: 5

Other than unlocking more chars. and more trail maps, there are not a lot of other things to do.

Fun Factor!: 10

This game is awesomely fun, but I love RPG’s. This game is tied for my favorite RPG even with PM:TYD, both get 10’s in Fun Factor.

Overall:
Average: 8
Opinion: 9

The sound should have been way better. If you like Fire Eleblem or any RPG, this has to be in your collection.

Recommendation:

If you love RPGs you should own this game. If you like action, don’t buy it. They also have its sequel out on the Wii.
