Whenever Nintendo released
a new platform, generally the first game on it was a Mario one. The Super
Nintendo continued this tradition with Super Mario World, a game that solidified
Mario's career. Although some things in the game are recreations of Super
Mario Bros. 3, it is still revolutionary. Following is my opinion:
STORY (NOTE: From this review on, I'll no longer rate the storylines, as I'm not a scriptwriter.)
Mario, Luigi, and Princess
Peach are on vacation in Dinosaur Land, a previously unseen part of the
Mushroom Kingdom. Suddenly, Bowser and his kids kidnap Peach YET ANOTHER
time, conquer the whole island, and trap all its inhabitants in eggs, who
are guarded by the Koopalings. Mario and Luigi then must save Dinosaur
Land from doom... with the help of Yoshi, the only dinosaur from the island
who could free himself from the egg he was trapped in.
GAMEPLAY – 8.5
As I said before, many of the items are recreations of Super Mario Bros. 3. The coins are used to obtain lives, Mushrooms increase Mario's power, Fire Flowers make Mario launch fireballs, a Power Star gives Mario temporary invincibility, green Mushrooms grant a life, and, similar to the Super Leaf from SMB3, a Feather grants Mario a cape. With this cape, Mario can fly, although in a very slippery manner. By pressing the down button while Mario falls he can do a thump on the floor. Some new things in this game are:
* The Dragon Coins: Big, floating coins with Yoshi's face drawn on them. Collecting all five in a level grants an extra life. You won’t have entirely completed until you grab all of them.
* Yoshi: Our cute dinosaur can be rode, helping you on your quest. He eats enemies and items, is able to do different things when eats Koopas (such as spitting fire, flying, etc), and can kill some enemies far more quickly than Mario.
But now, let’s talk about the levels' layout. There are 9 divisions of Dinosaur Land: Yoshi's Island, Donut Plains, Vanilla Dome, the Twin Bridges, Forest of Illusions, Chocolate Island, Valley of Bowser, and the Star and Special Worlds. The last two ones excepted, each world has a castle where the Koopalings settle in. In each castle you must defeat a Koopaling, rescue a Yoshi, and then destroy the castle.
The Star World can only
be accessed by finding a Star Road. The Star World is set in a really high
mountain in the shape of a star. Through the Star World, you can also access
the Special World. This one is set in a black background with the word
"SPECIAL" written on stars; above the writing there is a Super Famicon
symbol. By completing this world, you've zeroed the game.
GRAPHICS – 9.5
Mario's layout is now more
detailed, as are the Koopalings'. The backgrounds now have more detail
and are better drawn. However, Luigi is still only a palette swap of Mario.
This would be corrected in Super Mario All-Stars,
MUSIC - 10!
The Mario series is one
of the series with the best music! It's very catchy, simple, and easy to
sing along to. SOOOOOOOOO cute!
FINAL NOTE – 9.5
The game, just like many
from the Mario series, is revolutionary. Excepting the fact that most items
are recreations from SMB3 and Luigi has no decent function, it’s still
good. If you are still able to buy a SNES, look for this game! I also recommend
Donkey Kong Country...
