About the game: Ah, Mother
3… The third and (for the time being) last Mother game. Many fans call
it Earthbound 2 since Earthbound 1 (with Ness) was a sequel to another
Earthbound game that we call Earthbound 0! *pant* Anyway, it’s the same
basic storyline, it’s about a boy (Lucas) who has untapped powers and ends
up having to save the world! But it goes much deeper into character development.
It is for the GBA but only released in Japan so you’ll have to order it
online or find a translation or something.
Story: 8
The game opens up to two
brothers, Lucas and Claus, who are visiting their grandpa named Alec. After
some character introductions, we skim over to Flint, the father of the
family. (Le gasp! We get to see the father in this game!) A fire breaks
out in the forest near the village they live in, caused by strange people
wearing pig masks. So Flint has to help out. Then the plot deepens when
we get into chapters filled with character development and how they all
intertwine! So basically, what I’m saying is that if you take the time
to play through the game you’ll see that the plot is intense and is very
original. A bit into the game Lucas finds out there are seven needles
that keep a dragon dormant; few people can pull these needles. If someone
with a good heart pulls them, there will be peace, if it’s a person with
a corrupt heart, the world will be destroyed, and if someone with no heart
pulls them, everything ceases to exist.
Gameplay: 9
Like a lot of the best games,
this one is an RPG. Basically, like other RPGs, you must fight enemies,
collect items, and collect power-ups. If you played Earthbound, you’ll
notice the fighting system is practically the same: you just touch the
opponent to engage in battle, if you touch their back, you get an automatic
first strike and vise versa if they touch your back. Also when you get
up to a certain high level, you can kill enemies instantly by running into
them. The only reason it didn’t get a ten is because the fighting system
is like I said earlier, practically the same as Earthbound.
Characters: 8
Yeah, another 8! There is a very wide variety of characters in the game, the only reason it didn’t get a 9 or 10 is because there are some reused characters in the game and also some characters are just “clones” of Earthbound characters but with different names and such. I shall give a bio of the major characters, and there are a lot!
Lucas: The Ness of Mother
3, Lucas is the younger brother of Claus. Lucas is a bit of a wimp basically.
At first he has no unique powers but later on a mystical… person teaches
him the power of PSI. Can he save the world? Or will the pig masks make
everything theirs?
Claus: The older brother
of Lucas, he is the outgoing strong brother. After a tramatic event he
ends up vanishing…Ooooohhh… Scary!
Boney: The dog. I’m only
placing him as an important character because he is in your party throughout
most of the game, but doesn’t really do anything important. He can sniff
enemies to find out their weaknesses in battle.
Flint: The kind and caring
father. He is extremely strong and doesn’t appear much in the game; he
only appears in two chapters so he doesn’t do much.
Hinawa: The kind and loving
mother. Like Flint, she doesn’t appear much in the game.
Duster: A strange man who
is a thief (and the son of one) and has a limp because his father Wess
pushed him too hard in training. In battle his special abilities are the
use of ninja-thief tools such as wall staples, bombs, a hypno watch, etc.
Kumatora: She has an awfully
strange name, but don’t disrespect her, because she’s a princess! She meets
Duster in Osohe castle during one of his thieving expeditions. She is the
only other party member that can use PSI, mainly elemental attacks.
Pig Mask Army: A large
army of strange, pig mask-wearing men who try to make the world of Mother
3 all technological to try to make the people greedy and corrupt so they
join their side.
Masked Man: A mysterious
masked man who always gets in Lucas’s way. Who is he? What’s his purpose?
He is the commander of the Pig Mask Army.
Fassad: A greedy and evil
man who is also part of the Pig Mask Army, he always confronts Lucas and
the gang, just to get beaten up.
Magypsies: These seven…
creatures are neither man nor beast, neither male nor female. They are
experts in PSI and teach Lucas and Kumatora new abilities throughout the
game.
Porky Minch: And finally,
Porky Minch, that’s right PORKY not POKEY because I’m pretty sure those
are cacti. Anyway, Porky was a backstabbing fat little jerk in Earthbound
and in this game he’s a backstabbing fat… old man? That’s right, by abusing
time travel he has turned into an old man of immeasurable age and controls
the pig army. He’s so old he can’t do anything without the help of machinery.
So yeah, there are A LOT
of characters!
Graphics: 8
The graphics are WAY better
than the lame Earthbound graphics. The only reason the graphics don’t get
a ten are because in battle, the enemy sprites STILL don’t move but the
fight backgrounds are pretty cool.
Sound/Music: 10
Unlike the prequel, Mother
3 has music that fits in perfectly everywhere! Every time you go somewhere
new, there’s a new set of music to listen to. Also every enemy has their
own theme, and when you do combos attacking noises play into the theme
of whatever enemy you are fighting, which is awesome.
Controls: 9
Yet another high score!
Anyway, the controls in this game have improved greatly over those in the
last game, since you now run, and accessing the menu is more obvious, as
you use the start button instead of the B button as I think it was in Earthbound.
Anyway the one point was taken off because you STILL can’t jump. GRR!
Length: 6
A score lower than eight?!
Le gasp! Anyway, this game WAS longer than Earthbound but in a sense it
wasn’t, as most of the new areas are right next to old ones instead of
having to take a vehicle or something, but that’s terrain-wise. It only
took me a few days of playing to beat the game since there were no puzzles
and you can run too.
Difficulty: 7 (meaning it’s tough but not too tough)
Yeah, a seven. The game
had some parts where it was difficult to tell where to go, such as Osohe
castle and New Pork City. Also a few bosses were extremely hard such as
the Barrier Trio and the King Statue. And Porky himself is tougher than
in Earthbound.
Fun Factor!: 8
Another eight! Anyway, the
game was a very pleasurable experience. There were new areas, new funny
characters, and great jokes. I’ve played through it a few times and still
think most of the jokes are hilarious, such as Mr. Saturn and Porky himself.
Recommendation:
GET. THIS. GAME!!! You won’t regret doing so. Despite the fact it’s in Japanese, the storyline is still very easy to follow and certain sites have translations of the text you can read to understand. So go search for this game, play it, and ENJOY IT!
